1980: Voyager 1 reveals Saturn's complex of rings

Prior to Nov. 12, 1980, Saturn was believed to have three or four major rings but Voyager 1 revealed the planet's rings actually consist of hundreds of slender ringlets during it's closest encounter with the planet.
