"But now we have a choice: whether to implode and disintegrate emotionally and spiritually as a people and a nation -- or, whether we choose to become stronger through all of this struggle -- to rebuild on a solid foundation. And I believe we are in the process of starting to rebuild on that foundation. That foundation is our trust in God."
Billy Graham

Although not a resident but a lifelong Rockaway/Breezy Point beachgoer and former surfguard,I know Rockaway will prevail. This segment shows the family, faith and resolve of this close knit neighborhood.God's speed to all those affected, we are praying for you!

Like many stories on 60 Minutes I was not watching a news report I was drawn into a news event and was there with those people. Their fear of entering the water with small children to escape the approaching flames became my fear as well.

Thank you 60 Minutes for making this story and disaster real for me.

Here are two great groups helping in Belle Harbor and the Rockaways:
The Rockaway Rescue Alliance (offshoot of Rockaway Waterfront Alliance, a long-term community organization) is a group of volunteers helping with food, shelter and heat. Website : http://rwalliance.org/about/ Tax deductible donations can be sent to Rockaway Beach Club, 291 Grand St, Brooklyn, NY 11211. Checks can be made out to the non-profit ROCKAWAY WATERFRONT ALLIANCE; indicate that the funds are for "Rockaway Rescue Alliance Sandy Donations."

Occupy Sandy has set up a whole network of services in affected N.Y neighborhoods including Belle Harbor/the Rockaways, Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn. They are running a major distribution center for donated supplies at a church in Brooklyn. Website:
http://interoccupy.net/occupysandy/
For immediate needs they have set up an Amazon "wedding registry" (on their webpage there is a menu of links on the left, near the bottom) where folks can buy needed items and have them shipped to the Brooklyn church.

An outstanding group doing good in Rockaway. Your money won't go to a $1MM per year CEO but to people who need it.

Where are the families that 60 Minutes talked about that went to San Diego? We live in San Diego and would like to reach out and help them.

Just watched the story on Belle Harbor, my sister called about 10pm Seattle, Washington time, the night of Hurricane Sandy , she had just got off the phone with family in Belle Harbor, told how, fire engolfed and destroyed her husbands sister home. explained how the family managed to grap a trash bag and threw a few belonging in and leave their home of 20 plus years, the fear of being taken away by the rush flood waters and at the same time the home is on fire, they had no choice but risk the water and grabbing onto a rope to reach the home across the way. The story on 60 mins was hard to watch, the only thing left of the home is the porch and part of the chimmey

I thank 60 Minutes for seeing 'on line', for being able to see this tragedy of Belle Harbor; l lost my TV in the black out, and l feel compelled to let every one know, reach out to help an elderly neighbor in NYC who may be alone living on the 20th floor, and not knowing enough people, or even who and where to call, candles lack of water, electricity, pale in comparison to the tragedys of Staten Island, Long Island, Bell Harbor, Jersey Shore, l; almost feel guilty that l have light and water now, the same elements we all took for granted, your biggest prayer is ask who need help, just ask a doorman, becasue soem people had a second alternative, the old ,sick, and disabled may be too proud to ask, bring up a soup, a donut, a coffee, and a smile....CJBlanda

To The Blamee: American jouralists have been raped, murdered and tortured doing their jobs reporting the news. I'll list three: Lara Logan, a CBS reporter, was raped repeatedly while on assignment in Egypt. Daniel Pearl, a journalist for the Wall Street Journal, was beheaded and his body cut into pieces in Pakistan. Joel Elliot, a freelance journalist was severely beaten by Indian police in New Delhi for several hours. The International News Safety Institute (newssafety.org) maintains a casualty list of journalists who were killed worldwide. Many reporters, including CBS, have grown a pair. Have you?
