January 12, 2009 2:01 AM

From New Year's to Christmas, Andy Rooney likes all holidays, but perhaps his favorite is the one that involves fireworks.

Andy, speaking of Super Bowl Sunday and football, what''s your take on the today''s quarterbacks wearing what looks like a pickle barrel around their torsos? Remember when the Quarterback was the best looking player on the field? Those days are gone. And what''s with the gloves? Every player has on a pair of gloves. Is that to protet their manacures? Are we getting soft? And could you tell me why none of the NFL football helmets are scratched? I see and hear some good contact, but never do I see a scratch on the helmet. May be you can shed some light on the above in a future monologue.

Wow Andy, if your favorite holiday is Independence Day, then maybe this clip should have been shown in June. It seems so out of place right now. So let''s do a retake and I''ll try to adopt a bit of "Andy Rooney" humor.

"My favorite holiday is Inauguration Day. Okay, it isn''t really a holiday and that''s my point --- it should be. It already meets the criteria just like all the other holidays. It''s marked on every calendar. Everyone knows about it. There''s a celebration and a parade...sometimes with fireworks. Lots of people don''t go to work that day and their children miss school. There''s lots of media, signs and banners, vendors selling souvenirs and people standing around waiting for the events to start. Others are at home watching it on TV, just like the Superbowl, only around the world. Inauguration Day is frugal and efficient in that it comes every 4 years. Everyone picks their own way and cost of celebrating without breaking their budget. It''s bi-partisan and religiously neutral. It will remind Congress of what it takes to get things done. Now that''s a holiday that says "Yes we can!"

L-Atencio, I didn''t see anything offensive in what Andy just said. Perhaps you should ask yourself why you''re so easily offended.

I''m not the kind of guy who likes to exaggerate. I don''t like to criticize or censure anybody''s thoughts, and I don''t believe in generational antagonism. All this being said.. It''s past time for this man to retire. Rooney''s ramblings in the past weeks have been insulting, vaguely racist and apropos of nothing. Last week he snidely told us all how he wasn''t interested in attending Obama''s inauguration. Whatever your political leanings, it''s a slap in the face to Americans who hold hope in the new administration. I''m not African American, but I am optimistic and willing to give the new President a chance. As Americans; we have that right...This week Andy again rambles something about fireworks and then sagely shares with us his belief that MLK day, and President''s Day are unecessary and bothersome... My question is essentially this: Why is this drivel on primetime network television? Who appreciates this? How is this informative? What good is it doing? All the other people on 60 minutes still have journalistic credibility, but with Rooney..that boat has long since sailed: Now I realize that he''s worked there a long time, and that you''re shooting for an older demographic, but how long must these offensive and nonsensical rantings continue? Happy upcoming birthday Mr. Rooney. Perhaps this might be a good time to evaluate spending more time with your family.
