Well said by Ms. Noga. We'd add that challenging kids to excel and overcome problems on their own is more beneficial in the long term to their self-esteem than showering them with endless praise. Unfortunately, much of the value of what Ms. Chau had to say has been lost in the (often justified) criticism of her more extreme antics.

If we look at the declining levels of empathy, gratitude, responsibility and autonomy in American children, combined with significant increases in depression, anxiety and narcissism, it appears that our culture isn't doing a very good job of child rearing these days. As a psychotherapist for 30 years, I ended up writing a book about parenting because I started seeing such serious and pervasive problems in families.
Research tells us again and again that the most well adjusted children come from families where love and discipline play equal roles. The most dysfunctional and unhappy children come from overindulgent families.
American parents need to educate themselves. Raising a motivated and happy child isn't that difficult - but it does take consistency and commitment on the parent's part.
