Editor's note: In 2020, Virginia Vertetis' murder conviction was overturned on appeal. The appellate court concluded that the jury was improperly instructed on the state's self-defense law. In 2021, Vertetis pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of aggravated manslaughter. Her sentence is still being determined.
