Backlog of immigration cases causing major processing delays

Many people who try to enter the U.S. legally are turned away because of a huge backlog in asylum applications. According to a U.N. report released Tuesday morning, the U.S. leads the world in requests for asylum. More than 640,000 people had pending applications at the end of last year – a 44 percent increase from 2016. The U.S. had only made decisions on about 10 percent of those requests.
