Facebook gets OK to move forward with Instagram

(CNET) Facebook has been officially cleared to start issuing stock for the Instagram acquisition.

A fairness hearing, the last hurdle for Facebook before it could move forward with its Instagram deal, concluded today with the expected approval, a Facebook spokesperson has confirmed.

EA alleges Zynga game is a "Sims Social" ripoff

(CNET) The punches just keep coming for Zynga.

Electronic Arts is suing the social games creator for copyright infringement, alleging that Zynga ripped off EA's "The Sims Social" when it created "The Ville," EA said today in a press release.

The gaming giant filed its lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California today.

Twitter taken down by nasty "cascaded" bug

(CNET) It was a confusing day in the Twittersphere as users were met with a spotty site service outage this morning. The service went down and up multiple times in a two-hour period beginning around 9 a.m. PT.

Twitter said the outage's cause wasn't an attack, but a failure within Twitter's system.

Yahoo, Facebook in settlement talks over patent infringement

(CNET) Court documents reveal that Yahoo and Facebook are in settlement negotiations over their patent infringement dispute, Bloomberg reported today.

Yahoo's lawyers have asked a U.S District judge for a two-week extension on deadlines to file replies in the lawsuit while the companies talk about a settlement. The lawyers also asked for a two-week delay in a motion hearing now set for Aug. 10.

Facebook to buy Opera browser? Rumors surface

Tech blog Pocket-lint says one of its "trusted sources" revealed that Facebook is trying to buy Opera Software, the company behind the Opera Web browser, a sign that the social-networking company might be looking to launch its own browser.
