And today the social network's chief executive officer turns 28, an event that presumably will be marked with a flurry of birthday messages on his Facebook page.

Democrats to employers: Stop asking for Facebook passwords

(CNET) Democrats in Washington are aiming to protect employees being asked to hand over the keys to their Facebook accounts.

A new bill introduced yesterday in the U.S. Senate would seek to stop employers from requesting passwords or access to an employee's account on Facebook and other social networks.

(CBS News) Abraham Lincoln reportedly filed a patent for Facebook in 1845, at least that's what a viral hoax had the Internet believing this week.

Blogging consultant Nate St. Pierre decided to have a little fun with the Internet Tuesday by fabricating a story about how Lincoln was rejected for a patent in 1845 for a Facebook-like newspaper.

Facebook announces App Center

(CBS News) Facebook announced the App Center Wednesday. The planned applications hub may take a chunk out of Apple and Google's mobile market share.

To be clear, Facebook apps are not the same as Apple or Google apps. Apps developed for an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch need to be approved by Apple before they can be downloaded onto iOS devices.

Just like the current Apps and Games page, Facebook App Center will list apps that can be installed on Facebook. The biggest change, however, is the move to mobile.

Facebook stock will range from $28 to $35 per share. The company's valuation will be from $85 billion to $95 billion.

Users in the United States and the U.K. can enroll as organ donors via links to official registries on the world's biggest social networking site, said chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg.

Facebook, security firms to provide free antivirus

(AP) Facebook is strengthening its security controls in an attempt to protect its 900 million users from spam and malicious content.

Facebook said Wednesday that it will work with Microsoft Corp. and with computer security firms Trend Micro Inc., Sophos, Symantec Corp. and Intel Corp.'s McAfee to provide safeguards on Facebook.

Microsoft sells AOL patents on to Facebook

(CBS/AP) Microsoft, which just bought patents from AOL for $1 billion, is now turning around and selling most of them to Facebook for $550 million.

Microsoft and Facebook said Monday that Facebook is buying about 650 of the 925 AOL patents and patent applications Microsoft bought.

If Facebook's documents are approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission, the social network will likely hit the NASDAQ on May 17, reports TechCrunch. The technology blog cites "multiple sources close to the company."
