Amanda Knox acquitted of murder

Last Updated 6:28 p.m. ET

PERUGIA, Italy - American student Amanda Knox, who was convicted by an Italian court for the 2007 murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher, was acquitted Monday by an appeals court.

Her murder conviction in the 2007 slaying of her roommate Meredith Kercher was thrown out by the jury, and she was ordered immediately released from prison after nearly four years of detention. She was seen leaving the prison about 90 minutes later.

Italian lawmaker Rocco Girlanda, who has spearheaded Knox's case and is close to the American, says she and her family will leave Italy on Tuesday aboard a commercial flight from Rome.

Knox collapsed in tears after the verdict was read out.

The murder conviction against her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito was also thrown out.

The judge upheld Knox's conviction on a charge of slander for accusing bar owner Diya "Patrick" Lumumba of carrying out the killing. He set the sentence at three years - meaning for time served - and a fine of 22,000 euros (about $29,000). Knox has been in prison since Nov. 6, 2007.

Knox and Sollecito had been convicted in 2009 of sexually assaulting and murdering Kercher, who was stabbed to death in her bedroom. She was found the following day in a pool of blood and covered by a duvet.

Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison, Sollecito to 25. Also convicted in separate proceedings was Rudy Hermann Guede, an Ivorian man. They all denied wrongdoing.

DNA evidence used to convict Knox and Sollecito has since been scientifically discredited.

Inside the courtroom, Knox's parents, who have regularly traveled from their home in Seattle to Perugia to visit the 24-year-old over the past four years, hugged their lawyers and cried with joy.

"We're thankful that Amanda's nightmare is over," her younger sister Deanna Knox told reporters outside the courthouse. "She suffered for four years for a crime she did not commit." She then asked for privacy for the family so they could "recover from this horrible" ordeal.

"We've been waiting for this for four years," said one of Sollecito's lawyers, Giulia Bongiorno.

The Kercher family looked on grimly as the verdict was read out by the judge after 11 hours of deliberations by the eight-member jury.

The Kercher family looked on grimly and a bit dazed as the verdict was read out by the judge after 11 hours of deliberations.

"We respect the decision of the judges but we do not understand how the decision of the first trial could be so radically overturned," the Kerchers said in a statement. "We still trust the Italian justice system and hope that the truth will eventually emerge."

The victim's sister, Stephanie Kercher, who was in Perugia with her mother and brother for the verdict, lamented that her sister "has been nearly forgotten."

"We want to keep her memory alive," she said after the verdict.

Outside the courthouse, competing protesters - some supporting Knox, some not - added their voices, with cheers as well as shouts of "Shame, shame!"

As the verdict was announced, about a dozen supporters from the group called Friends of Amanda, gathered at a downtown Seattle hotel to watch the proceedings on TV, burst into applause and cheered. They began chanting, "She's free!" and "We did it!"

Jubilation in Seattle as Amanda Knox is freed

Earlier Monday, as hundreds of reporters and cameras filled the underground, frescoed courtroom, Knox tearfully told the Italian appeals court she did not kill her British roommate, pleading for the court to free her so she can return to the United States. The court began deliberations moments later.

Knox frequently paused for breath and fought back tears as she spoke in Italian to the six members of the jury and two judges in a packed courtroom, but managed to maintain her composure during the 10-minute address.

"I've lost a friend in the worst, most brutal, most inexplicable way possible," she said of the 2007 murder of Meredith Kercher, a 21-year-old Briton who shared an apartment with Knox when they were both students in Perugia. "I'm paying with my life for things that I didn't do."

"She had her bedroom next to mine, she was killed in our own apartment. If I had been there that night, I would be dead," Knox said. "But I was not there."

"I did not kill. I did not rape. I did not steal. I wasn't there. I wasn't there at the crime," Knox said.

"48 Hours Mystery" correspondent Peter Van Sant reports that Knox appealed to the jury - members of which wept openly during her statement - to reverse the conviction and let her return home.

"I insist I'm innocent and that must be defended. I just want to go home, go back to my life," she told the court through tears.

Van Sant says Knox's words brought tears even to the eyes of some journalists in the room.

Minutes before, an anxious Sollecito also addressed the court to proclaim his innocence and plead for his release from prison.

"I never hurt anyone, never in my life," Sollecito said, shifting as he spoke and stopping to sip water. He said at the time of the murder he was in a great period of his life, close to defending his thesis to graduate from university and having just met Knox.

The weekend Kercher was murdered was the first the pair planned to spend together "in tenderness and cuddles," he said.

At the end of his 17-minute address, Sollecito took off a white rubber bracelet emblazoned with "Free Amanda and Raffaele" that he said he was been wearing for four years.

"I have never taken it off. Many emotions are concentrated in this bracelet," he said. "Now I want to pay homage to the court. The moment to take it off has arrived."

I read previous posts here and there stating: "Let this American citizen free". Dude, just because she is an "American citizen" that does not mean she is innocent! Murderers come in all shapes, sizes and colors. That is what I don't like about Americans (PS I am one). They think that they can DO ANYTHING by virtue of being American. It is a free pass. I have a feeling the US government pressured the Italian government. Shame on us if we did.

Just because she was tried in an Italian court that does not mean ALL Italians and their court systems are idiots. Or in reverse, just because we think that it is NOT an American court, we all assume all non-Americans are idiots, stupid, inefficient, etc.

We focus on this party girl (druggie) and all her presumed innocence and the headline went to this "Ugly American" and instead of the victim. What a shame!

Look if you have followed this story. There were NO other suspects and no other DNA was found. Knox also lied and displaced the blame on a bartender friend. She told different stories. First she said she was covering her ears and her bar tender friend was killing her room mate. Then, she said she was with her boyfriend. She is a Casey Anthony protege! What a liar and a *****! Not to mention a murderer.

Attached is a letter from a judge to president Obama concerning the Knox trial. This judge is a friend of the family and the letter states all of her rights under International and Italian law.

These include

1. No immediate call to US consulate.

2. No access to an interpetor per Italian law.

3. No access to an attorney per Italian law even after she requested one.

If this happened here in the US the case would have never made it to trial.

DNA DNA DNA DNA DNA DNA

The fatal blow to the prosecution's case was a court-ordered DNA review that discredited crucial genetic evidence used to convict Knox and Sollecito in 2009. They were sentenced to 26 and 25 years, respectively.

Amanda kiss American soil when your feet hit the ground!American Students studying abroad beware! The courts overseas are not like America's. They want someone to pay for crimes whether that person is innocent or not! Amanda, family and friends have a happy ending. Another family does not not. Someone killed that young woman. Another person is still jailed for the murder. But who is he. I have heard very little about him. 16 years is not enough to pay for taking a life for kicks. He should rotten in there. Nonetheless, Amanda Welcome Home! Learn something from this horrible ordeal!

Apparently Rudy's sentence was taken down from 30 to 16 years after he'd changed his story to indicate that, contrary to what he said at first, Amanda and Rafaelle were there with him. Travel is wonderful. It broadens perspective and has the potential to improve understanding between individuals and cultures. Italy is a wonderful place. All societies make mistakes in their judicial systems. I believe the Italians probably got it right this time. Look at the result. Amanda is free. I hope they got it right. Students studying abroad should probably avoid the drugs and get to know their bed partners a bit better (even though their local compatriots may not) and, if being questioned by police, unless under actual torture, exchange students should be sure to avoid admitting to untrue statements or implicating innocent others.

I am convinced beyond all doubt that Amanda participated in the murder of Meredith Kercher. I became convinced when I read a copy of Amanda's handwritten letter to police after she verbally confessed, and signed another statement summarized by police (which were not admitted at her first trial because she had no legal counsel when she confessed the first time). The judge did allow her voluntarily written letter.

Search for this letter, she wrote it on Nov. 6, 2007, there is a wonderful 'Statement Analysis' done on it too -- within this letter she names the owner of the pub where she worked, Patrick Lumumba, as the murderer -- she said she saw him in the house with Meredith and covered her ears when she heard Meredith screaming. Patrick had an iron-clad alibi, but Amanda didn't admit to falsely accusing him until after the police investigation exonerated him two weeks later.

There is a 427+ page report from Amanda's first trial detailing all the evidence of Amanda's guilt -- called the Massei report after the lead judge in the trial -- the guilty verdict was unanimous. I have read this report -- there is no possible way on earth Amanda Knox was not involved in this murder -- she definitely participated -- there is a mountain of evidence!

American media are being spoon-fed propaganda by the million-dollar+ propaganda machine paid for by Amanda's parents and supporter, Friends of Amanda -- this is a fund-raising group that exists to pay for the professional liars, media relations specialists, and legal defense. The bill is into the millions of dollars, so big that Amanda will be doing talk show interviews, news specials, and books and movie deals for years to pay it all off. This is why her parents have to convince Americans that Amanda is innocent -- so they can all cash in!

The American public and media have been played for fools by this propaganda machine. Look for the mountain of evidence against Amanda Knox that is published in other countries -- some of the British media, The Daily Beast, Andrea Vogt (Seattle free lance writer), for the truth about this case. You are NOT getting the truth from ABC News, CNN, NBC, CBS -- they are all being paid to lie.

Look to these web sites for the 'other side of the story:' 1) True Justice for Meredith Kercher; 2) Perugia Murder File. This will open your eyes to how much real evidence there is against Amanda!

The Massei report is exculpatory. Get a clue. You've detailed almost every lie that has ever been concocted about this case, congratulations.

Kaizer, it's just the opposite. It was INCULPATORY. The Massei report delivered a UNANIMOUS decision against Knox and Sollecito. So congratulations to you for talking out of your hat.
