Cat with two faces now in 12th year

A cat with two faces, named Frank and Louie, is walked by the cat's owner at their home in Worcester, Mass., Sept. 28, 2011. The animal is known as a Janus cat, named for the figure in Roman mythology with two faces on one head. The owner calls the face on the left Frank, while the face on the right she identifies as Louie.

WORCESTER, Mass. - Frank and Louie the cat was born with two faces, two mouths, three eyes, and lots of doubts about his future.

Twelve years after Marty Stevens rescued him from being put to sleep because of his condition, the exotic blue-eyed rag doll cat is not only thriving but has made it into the 2012 Guinness Book of World Records.

He's the longest surviving member of a group known as Janus cats, named for a Roman god with two faces.

Stevens says every day is a blessing because such cats usually survive only for a few days.

These days, the friendly, laid-back Frank and Louie loves riding in the car and taking walks on a leash, though people who come up to pet him are usually shocked when they get close.

Most Janus cats apparently die between several hours after birth and their fourth day of life. I think I read that Frank and Louie (aka Frankenlouie) was taken in for euthenasia when he was barely two days old, but the vet or vet's assistant took pity on him, and look at him now...he's a celebrity!

I can't be the only one who mentally said the name as Frankenlouie.

I did it too. Actually, if you do a web search, the cat's real name is (wait for it): Frankenlouie, which is short for Frank and Louie. How's that for a coincidence?

What I want to know is if he(?) has a single brain or if they(?) are two distinct cats that just happen to share a body.

And of course, is the third eye blind? (Couldn't resist)

One brain, two faces, and if I remember correctly, another article stated that the middle eye didn't function.

At ToolMangler1: other articles state that the cat has a genetic birth defect. It is not a deformed twin of some kind. It is one cat who, by chance, developed a second face. So, all jokes aside, the cat (who also has only one brain) would parent its' own kittens. I think that another article stated that the right face was the one that actually did the eating, but you could search it for yourself, if you're interested. Quite the interesting cat!
