Stosur speaks out on Serena Williams outburst

It was a stunning women's singles final at the U.S. Open in New York Sunday. All the experts thought Serena Williams would crush Samantha Stosur of Australia. But instead, Williams blew her cool after an umpire's decision and Stosur took the trophy with a straight-set victory, 6-2, 6-3.

On "The Early Show" Monday, Stosur called her win "surreal."

As for the incident with Williams, Stosur said she just wanted to get past it and continue playing.

After a hard return to Stostur in the second set, Williams shouted "Come on," before Stosur had a chance to hit the ball -- a illegal action because it had the potential to distract her opponent. Williams lost the point.

Williams, who has had words with U.S. Open officials in years past, approached the umpire and said, "Aren't you the one who screwed me over the last time I was here? You have it out for me?" Williams added, "I promise you that's not cool. That's totally not cool."

When asked if her play was interrupted by Williams' screamed remark, Stosur said, "Everything was happening so fast. I was just trying to get the ball and before I knew it, then there was all of that commotion up at the net. I just tried to think about what I was doing for the next point and get on with it, really."

"Early Show" co-anchor Jeff Glor remarked, "You were remarkably well-composed, and everyone is talking about how confident you looked."

So was she nervous during the match?

"Oh, there were definitely some nerves," Stosur said. "But I think I felt just in-control pretty much from the first point, so I think that really helped settled me down. And then, right at the end, I could feel my heart pounding out of my chest and tried to keep it together and think about the next point."

Stosur has beaten Williams before. She defeated her in the quarterfinal of the French Open in 2010.

But Stosur said this was a whole different experience.

She said, "You can play someone like Serena on any court in the world, but that probably is the biggest court we get to play on and the biggest moment of my career. So, to achieve what I did under those circumstances, I'm just really proud of myself, I guess."

As for those circumstances, particularly following the situation with Williams and the umpire, Stosur said, "It was pretty difficult going around that change of events to serve the next point and the crowd was going nuts, and it was so loud and I felt like the noise was going right through me. I just wanted to get that next ball in the court and try and settle everyone down and get on with it."

Stosur is the first Australian woman to win a major tournament in 31 years.

She said about going home later this week, "I'm sure the reception will be amazing. I can't wait to get back there, but I'm sure it's absolutely going to blow my mind. "

It is amazing that tennis pros continue to make @$$es out of themselves at the US Open on a court named for one of the classiest athletes ever, Arthur Ashe. Serena Williams made a curtain call this year for showing herself on the national stage as in 2009.

The Dick/John/Mary play by play show on were chirping how 13 Slams made Serena right up there with the greats. Steffi Graf leads the way with 22 Slams. Graf retired at age 30 and Serena will be that age shortly. The window is closing for her to pass Graf with the younger, more fit talent on the women's tour currently. IMO if Serena drops some weight and corrals her temper she may very well get close to Graf's record.

It appears we have a double standard here. John McEnroe was the biggest cry baby in the history of Tennis. I didnt hear anyone say he was arrogant, or disgusting and an embarrassment to the game. Could it be because he is in the All White Male Society, and she is a Black Female, who happens to be one of the greatest tennis players of all time. It amazes me, when it is okay for White Society to do it and nothing is said, but when someone Black does it, they are condemnded. You all did Tiger the same way. When are we going to change our double standards America?

Stop comparing JOHN MCENROE to SERENA WILLIAMS. You sound like an idiot everytime you do that. Why don't you compare her to:
Caroline Wozniacki
Maria Sharapova
Victoria Azarenka
Vera Zvonareva
Na Li
Petra Kvitova
Samantha Stosur
Francesca Schiavone
Kim Clijsters
Marion Bartoli
Andrea Petkovic
Jelena Jankovic

Serena is disgusting and an embarrassment to the game of tennis. Anybody who actually follows the sport knows that she has been using steroids for a while. She is lucky that tennis, especially women's tennis, rarely test for illegal drugs. Nobody can stand her horrible outbursts at players, line judges, umpires, etc. and when they do criticize her for the way she acts, her and her stupid father LOVE to bring the race card into the conversation. BACK IN THE DAYS, HER FAMILY USE TO LIE ABOUT HOW THEY PLAYED TENNIS IN COMPTON AND HOW THEY NEEDED GANGBANGERS TO STAND WATCH WHILE THEY PLAYED ON TENNIS COURTS IN COMPTON. THIS IS WHILE HER FATHER DROVE AROUND IN A MERCEDES BENZ. THEY RECEIVED AID FROM SCTA FOR THEIR TENNIS CAREER AS WELL TOO. Liars and thieves. They will live eternity in hell.

this important? I'm just telling it like it is. They lied, stole and now they do and say nasty things to volunteer line judges and anyone they feel is against them. They play the race card every chance they get. All I did was JUST SAY IT. If you don't like it, go somewhere else.

Are tennis and the Williams' family really that important TO YOU that you just had to say something back to me for stating the truth?

Might wanna be a little more original.

I am goint to type this slowly so you understand it false angel. It seems to me that you have trouble admitting that:
A: You are a poor tennis player that spites other people's success because of their race and or background. (not playing a card you didn't bring up first. You've done it twice in two posts and I haven't read or heard anything about Serena playing your favorite go to card.)
B: You must know them personally to make such accusations (which by the way you chose note to answer my question about your proof below.)
C: DO you really think that what they have done in life so far merits them an eternity in hell?
And yeah, it is that important to me to defend a person that you attack with such unbased enthusiasm. You really are a sad, sad pathetic excuse for a human being. I bet you walk around in your tennis gear wishing you had half as much talent as any of these players, including the Williams' sisters. I would pay to see you ever actually meet the sisters and I can gurantee you you would ask them to autograph your visor.
How's that for original?

No joke, has Willliams ever been tested for male enhancement drugs. Not to be disrespectful but she looks like she has far more "manish" features than feminine. I know tennis players are athletic but Willims is built more like a linebacker than a tennis player. I'm just sayin'.

It's known that she uses steroids. She just gets away with it because they rarely test for illegal drugs in tennis. She also takes those extended breaks as of late because her body now takes a longer period of time to recoup after using steroids for that long. FACT.

So this is a FACT because you have some results or proof? Or simply because you hate Serena?

How sad she has done this before and continues to get away with such poor behavior. When you make over 1.2 million a year and then they fine you $2,000, what a joke.

Serena and any other athlete has a right to speak out if they think that they've been cheated. Why is it that no one complains when some of the girls moan, groan and scream loudly like they're in the middle of a sex act. If saying "come on" gonna distract the other girl, then maybe she should not be in a competitive sport like tennis. It was pretty obvious that Serena was singled out because the officials wanted the Australian girl to win.

When Serena was at the top of her game before the injuries, she dominated this sport. With all of the grunting, screaming and moaning that female tennis players make during a match, it's a shame that Serena was punished for simply saying "come on". If they gonna punish her for that, they should totally stop all of the females from making loud sounds when they hit the ball. Look as though they want to pick and choose what females or female they want to punish for making noises. Williams already had a negative history with that particular judge so she probably should not have been sitting in the judge's chair anyway. Williams said that the judge was hating and i beleive that to be so.

Please get your facts right - you only listened to Williams, who was wrong by the way. The chair umpire has not been involved with previous Williams outbursts. She was just ruling on the laws of the game (if you didn't know) and should not have been subjected to such a torrent of abusive language. The Grand Slam people have erred substantially in fining Serena only $2000 - should have been at least the same amount she was fined for her 2009 tirade. As well, she should be banned from playing in any Grand Slams for at least one year.

meshine, you're obvious a black person who can't stand anyone criticizing this ogre of a female (if you can even call her a female). This POS has been getting away with all kinds of things since her career started so **** and learn the sport before you start yapping your mouth as if you know anything about tennis.
