A look back at the morning of Sept. 11

It has been nearly a decade since terrorists attacked our homeland, destroying buildings on this hallowed ground, and killing nearly 3,000 Americans.

As "The Early Show" co-anchor Chris Wragge explained, 10 years after the attacks, Americans are still adjusting to life after 9/11. It's something none of us could have foreseen on that fateful September morning.

On Sept. 11, 2001, the sun rose that late summer morning, shimmering against the skyscrapers of lower Manhattan, revealing one of the most beautiful days of the year.

It was a morning that would change the world forever.

The day's top story: Michael Jordan's unexpected return to professional basketball. The headlines on the front pages were filled with business news, and the ongoing debate over stem cell research.

All that changed shortly before 9 a.m., when 19 terrorists hijacked four airplanes. Air traffic controllers were the first to hear the sound of terror.

"Nobody move, everything will be okay. If you try to make any moves, you will injure yourself and the airplane. Just stay quiet," Mohammed Atta warned passengers on board American Airlines Flight 11, which crashed into the World Trade Center's North Tower.

Aviation officials helplessly tracked the second plane, United Flight 175. The crash, just 17 minutes later, made clear the country was under attack.

White House chief of staff Andy Card whispered the news into the ear of President George W. Bush, who was reading with school children at Emma E. Booker elementary school in Sarasota, Fla.

After meeting with advisers, the president found himself in the school library addressing a nation, in shock.

"Today, we've had a national tragedy. Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center in an apparent terrorist attack on our country," the president said, less than an hour after the first attack.

They were hours of pure panic and terror: For those who were running for safety, and for a nation watching on television, wondering what would come next.

Moments later, a third plane, American Flight 77, this time into the Pentagon.

Frantic lawmakers evacuated the Capitol and the White House was on lockdown. United Airlines Flight 93, the fourth and final plane heading their way, taken down near Shanksville, Pa. by selfless heroes who saved countless lives, even if they couldn't save their own.

Then, the unimaginable. At 9:59 a.m., Tower 2, standing 110 stories into the sky, reduced to rubble in seconds. Twenty-nine minutes later, its twin, Tower 1, fell to the ground. Two symbols of American pride, two of America's tallest buildings, gone before our eyes. And with them, thousands of innocent victims, who had begun to fill their offices for work that morning.

Left in their places, was a burial ground, a crime scene, a war zone. It became known as "ground zero."

First responders were just beginning a herculean task that would last through countless days and nights. The fire at ground zero would burn for another 3 months.

But already by morning a new reality had set it. America had just experienced its darkest day.

I just hope We Never Forget that we let a Republicon steal the pResidency and then allowed these awful attacks to occur.

This is what the Republicon Party is about, using our government and our money to enrich their Corporate friends. They want to ruin government and then say it doesn't work.

Well, it does not work with failed Republicon ideology as we can see clearly. I hope we all learned our lesson: Never Vote for A Republicon for ANY Government Office!

I wrote this poem in memory of the victims of 9/11 who didn't have a chance to call their loved ones for that one last time.

I TRIED TO PHONE

I saw you standing by the phone, fearful of my fate,
as you saw our lives torn apart, crushed by a wicked hate.

Other's had called their loved one's, but I couldn't get a line,
To phone and say I loved you, that one last precious time.

I saw your pain and anger, as our tomorrows were torn apart,
so suddenly our dreams were spent, leaving only your aching heart.

But now I'm gone, you must move on, and allow life's dreams to grow.
Hold faith those dreams will see new dawns, like seeds beneath the snow.

I saw you standing by the phone, fearful of my fate,
don't worry dear, I'm close to home, I'm standing at heavens gate.

As a volunteer rescue worker I never felt prouder that day I finally left the WTC site and walked uptown to leave the city. The streets were lined with people crying and hugging me, thanking me for my heroic efforts. Now 10 years later the feeling is gone. I have come down with some major health issues. Then after having to go to Washington and literally knock on every congressmens doors with not one of them even having the courtesy to talk to us about the Zadroga health bill. My wifes house going into foreclosure from helping me pay my bills. Being in the process of losing my dream retirement home, that I bought after 9/11 for a place to go and reflect. All ths coupled with many people telling me it's my own fault I am sick because I volunteered and didn't take the appropriate safety precautions. Even though I tell them that the firemen had also already run out of airpacks and there were no masks available when I got there that evening. I no longer feel that pride, in fact I rarely even mention I was a rescue worker on 9/11 because of the adverse reaction I get, people thinking we all got rich from multiple lawsuits. I never recieved a dime, in fact I need surgery and the WTC clinic doesn't have the funding for it so I just wait. The pride I once felt is all but gone, where are all the people who lined the streets saying "United We Stand We Will Never Forget What You Have Done". As a pure volunteer I can tell you that our efforts of that day are all but forgotten save once a year when it is big news again..............

Maybe it's not worth much, but I want to tell you how I appreciate your efforts... and I apologize for the way you've been treated.. How short our memories are... and how stupid some of us are.. Already people are saying either, "It's all our fault".. or "It's President Bush's fault"... OR, saying that we should make up and be nice to all the murdering Muslims.. Again, thanks..and I'm sorry... but, I'll try to be one who tries to make sure no one can or will forget... We need to keep showing pictures and reminding people... and get right in their face when they act the way you describe...

I admire what you did bud, but it was a smoke and mirrors "Show" for us, these incompetent idiots aren't here for you my friend, they are out for their own selves. This was done to start the Police State we are currently in. 9/11 WAS AN INSIDE JOB, so of course the clowns aren't going to help you, How do you feel about being denied entry into ground zero today???...its because they are petrified that the TRUTH may get exposed today. I Hope you get better, and wish you and your family the best of luck in this now Nanny/Police State

I recall it well, the first plane had hit the first tower, and was on the news, with everyone wondering what caused it, then the second plane hit, while I was watching.

Within seconds, I realized this was deliberate, and I remarked out loud, that "today the world changed forever". My co-workers thought I was crazy.

Now ten years later......they probably don't think I was so crazy, after all.

The first estimate of deaths in the twin towns that day was at 12-14K people. On a typical weekday 50K people worked there and 20K people went through as visitors. What is miraculous is how many people got out safely that day. 2,606 died in the towers and on the grounds that day. In about 90 minutes, somewhere around 70K people (likely more then that) were able to get away from 2, 110 story buildings before they collapsed with very little notice.

when we look back and remember ALL those that lost thier lives, we also need to look back at the huge mistakes that were made afterword and ask ourselves some important questions. Who are americas true enemies? are we going to reapeat the past, wasting trillions on unneccessary invasions? When our we going to address our own borders and security?

Some good points however our government never seems to learn from past mistakes. The people who lost their lives as well as the firemen, policemen and the first responders who risked theit lives are not forgotten.
