Katy Perry ties Michael Jackson five-hit record

The Beatles didn't do it. Elvis and Madonna never did it, either. But pop star Katy Perry just tied Michael Jackson for an impressive place in music's history books.

CBS News Correspondent Bill Whitaker reported the singer, known for her hits "Teenage Dream" and "California Gurls," has topped the Billboard charts with five No. 1 hits from a single album -- the first time that's ever been done by a female artist.

"Think about the big artists that haven't accomplished this," observes Michael Yo, celebrity correspondent with E! News. "Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber -- hasn't even had a top 10 hit yet, yet Katy Perry has come out with an album with five huge No. 1 singles. I mean, it's a big, big accomplishment."

In fact, the King of Pop himself is the only other artist to pull off such a feat, scoring five No. 1 hits with his 1987 album, "Bad."

Perry celebrated the milestone on Twitter, writing, "What a way to wake up! SO proud to announce that the little-engine-that-could of a song 'LAST FRIDAY NIGHT' is officially #1."

Perry said last year of her wild success, "I'm a confident woman, I don't want to feel entitled, ever. I don't want to think that I just deserve to be No. 1 in order to sell out tours or whatever."

Whitaker points out that Perry's accomplishment is all the more awesome, considering it's just her second album.

She re-mixed one of the songs on the album, that is cheating in my book. She didn't do it with one of the original songs. Billboard needs to update the rules.

I agree pak31. It's a sad day when someone is idolized for singing songs about having sex with Aliens, menage a trios, and getting drunk and running around naked. Is this the kind of behavior we want our children to model? Yes,a four year old is too young to be singing katy Perry songs. Parents need to start listening to the words their children are singing. Maybe CBS could do a story on the disappearance of morals in America.

It's amazing that what she does is called singing, it's more like talk-singing. Many of her stuff sounds the same, with all the pauses in between words. ie Cal-i-fornia girls. She sings like a robot. Plus, most of her stuff is about being half naked, partying and sex. How this is talent is beyond me.
