FBI warns of "lone wolf" Norway-style attacks

The horrors of the Norway massacre committed by self-professed lone gunman Anders Behring Breivik could happen here, the FBI warns.

Although there is some skepticism to the contrary, it appears the Norway massacre self-confessed perpetrator, Anders Breivik, acted alone.

He was an angry, delusional young man with a murderous bent, and the FBI wants American law enforcement to be aware that there is a possibility of something similar happening here.

In a joint FBI/Department of Homeland Security memo (PDF), it states:

"Small-arms operations could be employed through a range of tactics from a lone offender--as illustrated by the recent 22 July 2011 lone shooter attack that took place in Norway--to a coordinated small-unit attack involving several operatives. Recent lone offender attacks and plots in the United States and abroad illustrate the effectiveness of the small-arms tactic and the need for continued vigilance and awareness of this tactic. Attacks by lone offenders--which by definition lack co-conspirators, and therefore provide fewer opportunities for detection--may be more difficult for law enforcement and homeland security authorities to disrupt."

Examples cited by the memo include the soldier from Fort Hood arrested on July 27 of this year with materials to produce a bomb; The lone gunmen who killed two U.S. Airmen at the Frankfurt, Germany, airport on March 2 of this year; and the Fort Hood shooter, Maj. Nadal Hassan, who killed 12 with two pistols in a late 2009 rampage.

The domestic "Lone Wolf" threat is far from limited to Islamic-linked individuals, too. As reported by "60 Minutes," the "Sovereign Citizens" movement - a loosely knit group that doesn't pay taxes, carry driver's licenses or hold Social Security cards - has shown a violent and sometimes murderous dislike of law enforcement. Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh had only two known co-conspirators.

The use of small, tactical teams - or even well-armed individuals - is also increasingly employed by foreign terrorist groups, and has been used to deadly affect throughout the Middle East and other danger zones.

The overall rise in such cases led the FBI and DHS to conclude "that transnational terrorist groups and homegrown violent extremists (HVEs) could employ small-unit assault tactics in the United States."

Some of the steps they recommend law enforcement use to prevent such incidents include randomizing security patrols in potential target areas, increased reporting of suspicious activity, and conducting increased sweeps for explosive materials.

"We face an increased challenge in detecting terrorist plots underway by individuals or small groups acting independently or with only tenuous ties to foreign handlers," the FBI/DHS memo states. "Recent events have illustrated that state, local, tribal, and private sector partners play a critical role in identifying suspicious activities--such as unusual purchases of or inquiries about firearms, gunpowder, or ammunition--and raising the awareness of federal counterterrorism officials."

I am a retired military officer, Vietnam vet, have a concealed weapons permit and (if it is legal) often armed. Who do you want standing next to you if the next "lone wolf" terrorist strikes; me or New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (WITHOUT HIS SECURITY DETAIL)?

I have started an online petition supporting H.R. 822, "We, the undersigned, request our elected representatives to cosponsor H.R.822, National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011 and vote affirmatively for this bill when it comes up for a vote. There are clear and undeniable U.S. Constitutional provisions that support this measure. Recent Supreme Court decisions have affirmed individual rights under Amendment II of the U.S. Constitution. In addition, this bill is required for the Federal Government to fulfill its constitutional obligation, on this matter, under Section 5, Amendment XIV."

681. Norway police is complicity of Anders Breivik (8/15/2011)

Norway police helped Breivik in his terror attack and cover up the plot.

1. Breivik was in police uniform that helped him in his terror attack.

2. Two days before the Norway terror attack, a special police unit conducted a bombing exercise in downtown Oslo which was in same area where Breivik detonated a bomb. The drill was a cover up operation to ensure the success of terror attack case. Breivik was in police uniform. He would have been misunderstood as being a policeman in anti-terror exercise if he was checked or discovered by security guards. The same tactic was used in 7/7/2005 London subway bombing. That criminal style was out of the same handler.

3. The seemingly incompetence of police assured the slaughter going on in Island. It took police one hour to reach Utoya after they received shooting report. In Virginia Tech.killing, Police blocked an information of shooting death of a student (murderer was at large) Which guaranteed the shooting spree could be carried out two hours later. Local authorities were told to take no action to pursue killer by Federal agents.

4. Hide other shooter.

Witnesses said there were two shooters:

Marius Helander Roset said, "I am sure that there were shots from two different places on the island at the same time", he said.

The person was following them around was 180 centimeters tall, had thick dark hair and non-Nordic appearance. He had a pistol in his right hand and a rifle on his back.
"I believe that there were two people who were shooting", says Alexander Stavdal (23).

Yet Police said there is only one - Breivik. He was immediately described as "a lone wolf assassin", who "acted alone" (BBC July 24,)

Leftists are mining minority race hate and economic jealously against white Americans and are responsible for the recent Black racist mob attacks on whites. Their race baiting and smearing for votes has to stop. They will "progress" to inciting race riots as it serves them like they did when they had power in the past. That is what the FBI should and would be watching if the organization was not politized by ADL, Holder and Obama.

Sure "formr", the lack of available arms for the victims worked well for those in Norway and Fort Hood worked quite well didn't it? FORT HOOD, where even the soldiers were disarmed, a perfect "gun free zone" pathetic sarge, and your answer is more?

We've already had a "lone wolf" attack here; the Virginia tech shootings. It isn't very intuitive to say that we may have something in the future which we have already had. Yes it has happened to us and yes, it has happened to others, and yes it may happen again. Perhaps what the FBI is really saying is that they aren't confident that they can stop this type of thing from happening- no one expects them to- we know they aren't God and we know they cannot know the unknowable. Perhaps a little more straight forward announcement would be more helpful. I hope this isn't some kind of an election ploy or a political attack on someone because come to think of it, this is an invalid form of argument often used in politics called "guilt by association." It goes like this:
Anders Breivik is conservative.
Anders Breivik is a mass murderer.
Therefore, if conservatives are elected, there will be a mass murder.
It is simple to see the strategy, and it should really be illegal to use the FBI as a political tool to advance this sort of flawed logic. I would also note the hypocrisy of saying Republicans use scare tactics and then employing this kind of garbage.

In a free society, if individuals set there minds to it, there's very little that can be done to stop people from running amok. What is being suggested (again) is that we trade liberty for security.
