(CBS) A New York mother was recently kicked out of a popular supermarket on the city's Upper East Side after she failed to pay for a half-gallon of milk and other beverages she says she accidentally left in her stroller.

Elissa Drassinower, 33, told the New York Post, "The security guard took my photograph, told me I was banned from Fairway for life and said I was lucky she didn't call the police. I was crying, my 20-month-old son was crying. It was humiliating."

The stay-at-home mom says she wasn't shoplifting.

Drassinower says she put her milk and a six-pack of beer under her stroller because her hand basket was getting too heavy.

Drassinower told the Post, "When I was checking out, my son, who was really cranky, started acting up, and I forgot to pay for the milk and the beer."

When Drassinower left the store, she says was confronted by a store guard.

"She said she saw me put the milk and beer under the stroller," Drassinower said. "I apologized, explained what happened, said it was an honest mistake and that I fully intended to pay, but she just nodded her head and told me I was shoplifting."

Drassinower was not arrested, but says the guard then notified her that she was banned from the store for life. And, she says, the guard said, should she be found on the premises, she could be arrested for trespassing.

As for the grocery store chain, it stands by its decision, saying she was seen putting items under her stroller and covering them with the bagged goods she had purchased.

Bruce Bobbins, a spokesman for the company, told the publication, "The woman in question was caught both on camera and by security trying to conceal and pilfer a number of items including milk, Red Bull and beer. We exercised our right to not serve her again."

But the mother, who has no criminal record, told The Post, "I threw the bags underneath my stroller and didn't even look at what was in there."

I am shocked the comments are so unforgiving. Clearly they have never had a child freaking out in a chaotic situation like this. I have shopped at this Fairway a number of times since it opened and while I love it, I think they are being a little unforgiving in this circumstance. The checkout lines there are a mess and I find myself overwhelmed and frazzled when my daughter isn't screaming. I have many times had to find places to stow groceries while I shopped because pushing a stroller and carrying a basket is next to impossible and I on more the one occasion, I have forgotten them until the last minute. Give the woman a break! It could happen to anyone.

People..you know..I once had such a traumatic emotional distracting day..I accidentally put the TWO WRONG shoes on my feet and went to work. They were kind of similar in color and style....but I remember being emotionally distraught that day..and that's why I did it. Your mind can kind of go on AutoPilot..like when you drive. Shopping is not so different. I could walk 10 blocks..and not remember what I saw or which streets I just stopped at lights. If your mind is so distracted on other things AND a kid...I mean ****..this is why I don't have kids. Don't want the responsibility and don't want to constantly look like a moron. Sorry mommy wanna bees. Mommyship....It's not for everyone!

AND....not to mention...It COULD happen....and it COULD happen to you ONE DAY..so be careful about WHO you throw stones at.

What a joke! I'm a mom of a fussy stroller aged kid and I never "forgot" items at the bottom of the stroller. You'll most likely see Fairway come out swinging with the video evidence showing her lurkin over her shoulder to see if anyone is watching her cover up her redbull! Fairway is a great place to shop and in NYC all retail establishments need security to prevent this from happening. She got caught. Get over it lady.

I go with the store on this one. For the woman to lie about what she did, while others saw her concealing her booty and then blaming it on her cranky kid is despicable. The store security was too kind and accommodating to this criminal. She should have been arrested.
