Group says it hacked U.S. law enforcement websites

LONDON -- The group known as Anonymous says it has hacked some 70 law enforcement websites across the southern and central United States in retaliation for the arrests of its sympathizers in the U.S. and Britain.

The hacking group also claims to have stolen 10 gigabytes of data, including emails, credit card details, and other information from local law enforcement bodies.

Anonymous' claims couldn't all be immediately verified, but a review of the sites it claims to have targeted -- mainly sheriffs' offices in states such as Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, and Mississippi -- showed that most were unavailable or had been wiped clean of content.

Law enforcement sources confirm that FBI is investigating the apparent cyber attack on law enforcement sites. The FBI is not commenting beyond that, reports CBS News justice and Homeland Security correspondent Bob Orr.

"The actors who make up the hacker group "Anonymous" and several likely related offshoots like 'LulzSec', continue to harass public and private sector entities with rudimentary exploits and tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) commonly associated with less skilled hackers referred to as 'Script Kiddies'" read a Homeland Security bulletin CBS News obtained.

So far, Anonymous has not demonstrated any capability to inflict damage to critical infrastructure, instead choosing to harass and embarrass its targets, according to the bulletin.

Half a dozen calls to various sheriff's offices across the country went unanswered or weren't returned early Saturday.

Keep all personal information off of the internet and you're set. That means you need to start paying your bills, picking up your paychecks and file your taxes with paper. We have tons of trees and don't need to worry about 'cutting down the rain forest' so we should go back to paper. But this cannot be done unless we demand that companies and the government do the same.

It's hardly discouraged if who's-the-best conventions are organized for them and they get hired by the gov't. What a sick, sick country.

Dumb deluded morons. Hacking a website is like tepeeing a house with toilet paper. Did you get past the firewalls to the intranet, i.e internal network? No? Oh well, hacker elite you are not.

Come on, boys.. It's time to grow up and get out of your mom and dad's house... and find a real job.. You might think you're cute among your circle of on-line friends but, to the rest of us, you're just pimple-faced losers. Someday, we'll have the technology to nail your a** to the wall...and there will be NO MERCY for you.. Like I said, grow up!! Get a life... Be a positive element to society...

I find hackers to be scum. They attack innocent people's information and for what purpose. Just because they can do it? Leave us alone and let us have some form of privacy. Find something better to do with your lives.

Even all of this just rants it is very very scarey because you would think that there would be so much protection on these sites that there would be no way to enter in and find out anything but I guess I live in a dream world.

I'm thinking that possibly the future use of the internet will be for social networking, only... IF we came up with the technology to grab these punks, we wouldn't do anything to them, anyway... I think that businesses and government agencies are going to have to come up with their own computer systems and networks, and have the system for only within the doors of their place of business or agency, and give up on being in contact with the rest of the world on one's business computers... There are just too many punk hackers out there wanting something to do, and looking for a job ain't one of them.. Let them continue to live on their parent's money and in their parents' house... and let them spend their time hacking Facebook and Twitter and Yahoo Messenger.. It'll still make people mad, but we can live with it if those get messed up..
