McCain: I'd "swallow hard" on defense cuts

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., indicated on CBS' "The Early Show" Monday that he would vote for the deal struck between the White House and congressional leaders on extending the maximum amount of the federal government's borrowing authority, known as the debt ceiling, even if it meant having to "swallow hard" on cuts to defense spending.

"The important thing for us is to go ahead and get this thing done," the 2008 Republican presidential nominee told "Early Show" co-anchor Erica Hill.

The deal announced Sunday night would increase the government's $14.3 trillion debt ceiling by more than $2 trillion, which is projected to last through 2012. The deal depends on approval from both houses of Congress before Tuesday's deadline, which is when the Treasury Department said the government will hit the debt ceiling.

In exchange for raising the ceiling, a similar amount of spending cuts during the next 10 years would be put in place. That could include defense spending, which McCain said he didn't support.

"I wouldn't have put that in there," McCain told Hill. "I probably will have to swallow hard."

The first trillion in spending cuts would be enacted immediately. A congressional commission would also be charged with finding another $1.5 trillion in cuts by Thanksgiving. If the commission fails to do so, or Congress fails to approve more spending cuts after the commission makes its recommendations, Congress would then be required to vote on a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution.

If the amendment fails to receive congressional approval, such a situation would automatically trigger $1.2 trillion in spending cuts, which would impact the Pentagon budget. But McCain doubted Congress would find itself in such a situation.

"It won't come to that in that I believe that this select committee, they'll come up with some pretty good and viable solutions, I'm convinced," McCain told Hill. "I think both sides will put their best people on it and people with credibility."

Senator McCain swallowed hard on Defense cuts? The Senator needs to read the Constitution of the United States of America before making stupid statements like this. Upon joining the Navy and upon being sworn in as a U.S. Senator, McCain took the oath to "support and defend to Constitution of the United States...."

Well Senator, in case you forgot what that document says about the powers Congress has in regards to rasing and funding standing armies, I will post Article 1: Section 8: Clauses 12, 13, & 15 of the Constitution below along with an analysis of what comporting your votes to it, would save the U.S. taxpayers each year.

Defense spending is not about national security, it is about military industrial complex created jobs in states and congressional districts, invading and occupying foreign nations rich with natural resources so that domestic oil, gas, and mining corporations can make huge profits.

Section 8: The Congress shall have power To:

Clause 12: raise and support armies, but no appropriation of money to that use shall be for a longer term than two years;

Clause 13: provide and maintain a navy;

Clause 15: provide for calling forth the militia to execute the laws of the union, suppress insurrections and repel invasions;

If Congress, including Senator McCain would adhere to the Constitution, the Army, Air Force and Coast Guard would be disbanded along with the Defense Department and the Pentagon. That would reduce this year's annual deficit from the expected $1.5 trillion down to $178.9 billion, the cost of maintaining the Navy and Marine Corps.(1) Add in Veterans pensions and Veterans Administration costs including monthly benefits including medical care and that number comes out to $303.50 billion annually. That would be a savings of nearly $696.5 and $1 trillion off the U.S. annual deficit.

Current U.S. Code Title 10: Subtitle A: Part I: Chapter 13 : Section 311. Militia: composition and classes defines the militia as

(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.

(b) The classes of the militia are:

(1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and

(2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.

Update, Sept 19: This item was originally posted Sept. 5, 2008. We have updated it to include additional details of the 1967 Forrestal disaster from official documents, which differ from McCain's own, widely accepted recollection. We have also included McCain's admission of "daredevil clowning" in an accident that did not result in loss of his plane.

CORRECT...........McCAIN FIRED OFF A MISSILE ON THE DECK OF THE FORRESTAL KILLING 300 CREW........BUT HE, AND HIS PLANE WERE OK.
===================================================================
Jeeeeeeeezzzzzzz! I'm one who really resents non-reading ignoramuses like you ....to the point of predjuce!

Read it again, Stu!
"....A third was destroyed on the deck of the carrier USS Forrestal when a missile fired accidentally from another plane hit either the plane next to McCain's or, less likely, his own aircraft, triggering a disastrous fire that killed 134 sailors and nearly killed McCain."

"ANOTHER PLANE", GET IT?????????????? ....and where do you get "300 crew"?????????

Get back to me when you've learned how to comprehend, read, wake up, or something! (...better yet, how about not at all???)
