Schieffer: We're behind Square One, in a hole

CBS News chief Washington correspondent Bob Schieffer said the failure Thursday of the House leadership to even manage a vote on its own deficit reduction bill showed how fractured the party is - and is a portent of trouble for House Speaker John Boehner.

"About 10 minutes before the vote was to start, they pulled the bill down. They said we've got to go back into conference - which means they didn't have the [votes]," Schieffer said on "The Early Show."

Debt drama continues with outcome unclear
Republicans cancel vote on debt bill

"I mean, this is enormously embarrassing for the speaker, when he can't bring his own people along. It almost raises the question: Is he going to be able to survive this?"

The failure of House Republicans to get behind a bill of its own, after months of acrimonious debate between the two parties over how to address the nation's debt and the looming deadline for raising the nation's debt ceiling, indicates that no progress has been made.

"If Republicans can't pass THEIR version of a bill, what do you think they're going to do when a Democratic version of the bill gets there?" Schieffer asked. "We're not back to Square One; we're back BEHIND Square One, in a hole. BELOW Square One."

Special coverage: America's debt battle

"Early Show" anchor Chris Wragge suggested that there are factions of the GOP who are making Boehner look foolish by withholding their support.

And they're "not embarrassed to do that," added Schieffer. "That's the part I don't know if he can survive or not, but this is a real setback for him and a real setback for the leadership."

When asked by anchor Erica Hill how important the freshman class of Republican House Members (many of whom are affiliated with the Tea Party) is to the current division within the GOP, Schieffer said, "That's absolutely right, Erica. But what they're telling me is that this goes beyond the Tea Party. There are some old line conservatives that just want more than the leaders have been willing to get them. They want deeper spending cuts.

"The reason that wasn't in this bill is the leadership knew they couldn't pass anything. They thought this was the best they can do, and even this is not good enough.

"It's not the leaders - the leaders are ready to deal," said Schieffer. "It's the followers, and they can't get anybody to follow them.

"So it's just a mess; there's no other way to get around it," said Schieffer.

"Larry Summers who was on our program about two weeks ago compared not meeting this [debt ceiling] deadline to financial Armageddon,' said Wragge. "Are members of the Republican Party, are they willing to sit back and allow it to happen? It affects the American people - they're seeing their 401(k)s and personal wealth dwindle."

"One would hope not, but here we are," said Schieffer. "I mean, there's no question now, that's where we're headed. And as you just said, Chris, we see what the markets have done already. We're in uncharted territory right now, and that's the dangerous part about all this."

The Republicans will end up with nothing. They pushed and pushed and fought and fought with nothing to work together on and now the last days are coming and they will get nothing.

I agree with the Democrats now just use the 14th and tell them too little too late and give them nothing.

We need to stablize the markets.

Government is all about deals and compromises. It's sad when you have a faction in government that refuses to say yes even when they have been practically handed everything they asked for. That is a recipe for failure which is exactly where our Government is now.

A small minority of Tea Partiers terrorizes our 401-K's, wrecks the markets, causes further unemployment, because "their ideas are the only legitiment ideas." One gunman terrorizes a country, murdering teenagers in cold blood, because "his ideas are the only legitiment ideas." A merchant ship is hijacked by terrorists because "their ideas are the only legitiment ideas." We've seen, throughout history, nations derailed, brought down, their people and other innocents abused, by small groups of ultra-"conservative" narrow-minded bullies.

The whole premise of our government is checks, balances, different points of view, but above all it has been about compromise to come to an agreement maybe not in the 100% best interest of everyone but at least to come as close as possible.

Our current legislatures' "digging in their heels" is not only embarassing, potentially harmful, but it's in a word, "childish."

Mr. Schieffer has been a respected journalist since many now in Congress were in diapers. Has he ever witnessed such self-absorption on Capitol Hill before? I doubt it.

This situation is simply madness gone extreme.

The issue is that the TEA-PARTY hobbits, using Senator McCain's words, will force the nation into default, thus derailing the recovery, what little there is of it, roiling international markets, and wreck the market.

To a large extent given the public nature of the GOP's civil war a great deal of damage has already been done. It is beyond me how the GOP thinks that it will win in 2012 given their lack of performance.

As for the TEA-PARTY -- given their anti-U.S. government sentiment they are in the wrong place...they shouldn't be in congress but in the state legislatures...the only way that they will achieve their version of small government is for their state to secede from the union...an this is one Blue-stater that will be more than happy to help them pack, drive them to airport, and wave a fond and long overdue fare-thee-well.

Given the GOP's position, Lincoln was clearly wrong to save the union...we should let the RED STATES go their merry or perhaps the BLUE STATES should secede, the results will be the same -- the RED STATES will rapidly devolve into the third world fundamentalist nation they so richly deserve.

It is so hard to believe 80 republican teabaggers are holding our nation as an economic hostage. True, they were elected, but I doubt that their constituents elected them to do this. They took an oath of office, much like my oath of commission, but they have failed to follow it causing their failure to serve the public trust. As someone who really has served, I find their actions to be unpatriotic, unamerican, and foolhardy. Hopefully, the President will invoke the power of the 14th Amendment to raise the debt ceiling by executive emergency order. Then simply allow the bush tax cuts to expire and the deficit would disappear over 10 years. As a patriotic American I am proud to pay taxes and I can afford to pay a few dollars more with expiration of these cuts that are so tilted towards the wealthy and corporations who do not pay their fair share. Respectfully, retired US Army Medical Officer.

mollydtt...Which party hasn't even submitted in writing their own plan? The Democrats! Don't you find it interesting, how totally silent the democrats are in the House? They have not answers on how to correct their budget crisis...except raise taxes, spend more and let's bankrupt our nation, so that Prez. Obama's socialistic agenda will continue forward.

Agnesdeo. this may be true about submitting in writing but the president has had numerous meetings with the speaker to let him know what he wanted. 4 trillion in cuts and 1.4 trillion in revenues. least you repbulicans forget Boehner is the speaker of the house and conTROLLS what comes to the floor for a vote or discussion. we all know that no house democratic proposals would even come up for that discussion because the speaker would just say NO. now if the republicans wrote a bill to include the cuts and the revenue/tax code adjustments there would be a unanimous vote in the house and senate, You also need to remember that its not the presidents job to write bills
