Winehouse's mother: "She seemed out of it"

LONDON - Amy Winehouse's mother said the singer was not well when they met a day before she died, a British newspaper reported Sunday, while her family mourned the loss of "a wonderful daughter, sister, niece."

The Sunday Mirror quoted Janis Winehouse as saying she believed it was "only a matter of time" before her daughter died.

The 27-year-old singer was found dead at her London home on Saturday.

"She seemed out of it. But her passing so suddenly still hasn't hit me," Janis told the tabloid.

Ambulance crews called to her home in north London's Camden area Saturday afternoon found the singer dead before they arrived.

Police said the cause of her death is being treated as "unexplained," rejecting speculation that she died from a drug overdose as "inappropriate." A post-mortem is expected Monday or Tuesday.

The Winehouse family said in a statement it was remembering her, and request for privacy.

"Our family has been left bereft by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece. She leaves a gaping hole in our lives," the statement said.

Fans from around the world and neighbors have left a growing pile of flowers, candles and messages outside Winehouse's home, as tributes from celebrities poured in. One of the messages read "R.I.P. Never Forgotten," while another said "It's all right, love. Go now."

Cremation is not the Jewish way at the end of life. There are problems for the soul when cremation is done. The body should be respectfully treated and burning it is not respectful. Shiva is suppposed to be for seven days. The soul gets comfort from shiva, as does the family.

Although I am saddened by the loss of a fellow human being at such a young age, this needs to be a wake-up call to the people that listen to and buy her music....stay away from drugs as much as possible...don't think taking pills will solve all your problems...and be sure that your friends are true friends and not leaches...

Everybody just assumed Brittany Murphy died of an overdose, because she was addicted to perscription pills. But didn't it turn out she had pneumonia and anemia (which can cause heart attacks when untreated) because of her anorexia?

I could see that being the case with Amy Winehouse too - her tolerance level must have been through the roof. Maybe it was the other issues that came along with the addiction ... loss of appetite, being too out of eat to take care of her health, etc.

Addiction seems like it must be a tough thing to kick once it sets in ... it's too bad she didn't at least try to kick it though.

So true I have a friend in this similar situation and I am her sponsor. You are right, "One cannot force a person/loved one/friend to sobriety." It is a devastating thing to witness but when you have exhausted time, money and resources on this person all is left is Prayer.... As for Amy, you are right again; she is an adult with free will and that free will can be used to self destruct in a legal manner.

The only person that could have made any difference in getting treated and in her life was herself. She really didn't want to go the route of becoming rehabilitated, because she loved the suffering more. She loved the drugs and booze more. She wasted her life and has hurt many because of it. She was selfish.

This is a very true statement to say the least. AMY built up the love of so many fans throughout the world which does not even include the personal love developed by her Family. She didn't not take into consideration how many people she would be hurting if she took her life from them. She was thinking only of her self and of no one person who believed in her....who actually "loved" her.

It is truly sad that Amy Winehouse has left all our lives and the lives she touched so so closely.

I am almost 70 Years old AMY and I want so much to say I, a "grumpy old man" really found enjoyment in your music to a point I never knew you were having these kinda problems. It's terrible when anyone dies. It's particularly terrible when a young person dies. Amy's mother could not stop her--no one can force another person from killing themselves with substance abuse. And not to be offensive, but why is a famous person called 'troubled' when they die from drugs--when the unknown are referred to as 'drug addicts"? They cause the same sadness and destruction in their family with their actions.
