Bit by a tick and feel sick? It may be babesiosis

We've all heard about Lyme disease, but did you know that there is another important infection spread by the same tick - and it can be fatal?

It's called Babesiosis. And it's probably the most serious blood disease that you've never heard of with a nearly 20 percent mortality rate for people with compromised immune systems. And, as CBS News Correspondent Debbye Turner Bell reported, medical professionals say it's on the rise.

Tick season is here. This time of year, Bell reported, brings bad memories for Jennifer Hertsled.

"I felt like I had the flu. Just really terrible like I had mono practically, like I couldn't keep on going," said Hertsled, who got babesioisis most likely after her cat brought a tick into the house.

While Hertsled knew that ticks could carry Lyme disease, she never heard of babesiosis.

What led her to finally go to a doctor?

"I went to a barbecue and actually fainted. I mean I passed out fainted, I had never fainted in my life," she said.

Babesiosis is contracted from the same black-legged deer tick that transmits Lyme disease, but it doesn't have Lyme's telltale bull's-eye rash.

"Of the hospitalized patients with severe babesiosis, 1 in 20 has died," Dr. Gary Wormser, chief of infectious diseases at New York's Westchester Medical Center pointed out.

Babesiosis is prevalent in the northeast and the upper Midwest locations where Lyme disease also occurs.

But unlike Lyme disease, babesiosis can be transmitted through both a tick bite and a blood transfusion. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says it's the No. 1 infection submitted into the blood supply.

That's why the Rhode Island Blood Center has taken drastic measures becoming the only center in the country to screen for babesia, the parasite that causes babesiosis.

"About 25 percent of adults don't have any symptoms whatsoever. If they donate blood, they may transmit it to the person getting blood transfusions, added Wormser.

Babesiosis is a serious problem and both doctors and victims like Hertsled urge people to take notice.

"I should have listened to my body sooner and done something about it," Hertsled admitted. "It's got to be taken care of; it's got to be caught."

The FDA says it's working to develop the best screening test for babesia. In the meantime, doctors say if you are exposed to ticks and aren't feeling well, ask your doctor to test for babesiosis in addition to Lyme disease.

Two years ago, my daughter started having chest paipns, soreness in her chest and upper back, fainting spells with dizzness and shortness of breath. Our family doctor gave us 2 different diagnosises and then sent us to RCH in IN for further treatment. She saw 3 specialists there and each had a differnt diagnosis. The last was it was just stress and she needed to see a therapist! After 6 months of driving 2 hrs(one way) for these doctor visits, with still no answers, I demanded that she see someone who could tell us something. They sent us to a pain management clinic. By this time, she hurt just to breathe. The fantastic doctor we met there listened to what we had to say. Then he turned to me and asked, "has she ever been bitten by a tick". We live in Southern Indiana... in tick country! He immediately tested her CD57 blood levels and found that she was suffering from Lymes Disease. She's been thru several rounds of antibiotics since then. Last fall/winter she had to have them thru IV's because her body was rejecting the pill forms. We just saw our amazinzg doctor earlier this month. He informed us that she's in a form of "remission" as her blood levels are back up above 60,the "normal range". I thank God every day that he lead us to this informed doctor!! My babygirl (who will be 18 next month) has a part-tme job, will be a senior in high school this fall, and has a support system that you would not believe! If you have ANY symptoms I've mentioned above... DEMAND the doctors preform a CD57 blood test!! It's that simple. That is the ONLY cell that the Lymes Disease attacks. There is NO cure for Lymes.... ONLY treatment. "Dr. C" informed us that only left untreated is the disease fatal. BTW.. her doctor is now just 30 minutes away from us!!and THE best at Lymes!!

I don't know where you got this map, but you're missing the Upper Peninsula of MIchigan, and that's in the area you are supposedly focusing on!

In Western NY there are no doctors willing to test for Lyme disease or coinfections such as Babesios. My 17 yr old daughter and I have Lyme Disease. Since NYS testing is flawed we had to have our blood sent to California for proper diagnosis. Now we have a 6 hour total travel to Hermitage PA for a Lyme Literate Doctor to treat us. Thank you for doing this story and please help us to educate physicians, make changes within IDSA and with our government. We were recently at a rally in Washington DC for Lyme Disease Awarenss in the park next to the White House and 2 people had ticks pulled off them there. Lyme disease and co infections are becoming epidemic. However we need changes made so that more people do not die, can get diagnosed properly and quickly and get physicians that are trained in treating these diseases.
Thank you
Lorinda
