Rory McIlroy the next Tiger Woods?

Twenty-two-year-old Rory McIlroy became the youngest U.S. Open winner ever this weekend. He also had the lowest Open score ever.

"I couldn't ask for more," he said later. "Just happy to be holding trophy!"

And his performance for the ages came just two months after his collapse for the ages.

At the Masters, McIlroy entered the final round with a commanding lead, just as he did Sunday - but back then, he crumbled, shooting an awful 80 to finish in 15th place.

Rory McIlron wins U.S. Open by 8 strokes

This time, he cruised. His victory -- by eight strokes -- was never in doubt - at least, not after he birdied the first hole. McIlroy finished the tournament with an amazing 16-under-par 268.

And, says "Early Show" co-anchor Jeff Glor, it has tongues wagging - with the name Tiger Woods being mentioned over and over by many golf experts and fans.

Glor says McIlroy's performance was "the kind of play we expected all along" after meeting McIlroy two years ago, after he'd won his first pro tournament.

McIlroy already had what Glor described as a "swing to envy."

The comparisons to Woods were already beginning.

Were they fair?

"Probably not," McIlroy responded. "I don't know how good I'm gonna be in five or ten years time. If I can win half the events that Tiger has, I'll be very happy."

McIlroy may, Glor days, be on the precipice of inheriting the mantle of best player in the world, a spot Woods has seemingly left vacant.

Golf magazine Editor at Large Connell Barrett told CBS News, "We've seen sort of a rebirth for golf. ... I think Rory McIlroy is the most talented player we've seen since Tiger Woods broke big in 1997."

And one who is, Glor says, very modest, at that.

Please be responsible when it comes to comparing Tiger with Rory. Wait for at least 10 years before doing so. It might be a good golf that Rory played last US Open but IT IS NOTHING YET WHEN COMPARED TO TIGER'S GREATNESS IN GOLF. GOLF IS NOTHING WITHOUT TIGER'S HISTORY AND WHAT HE DID AND WILL STILL BE DOING!!!

I agree with betterusa, let us see once he play more golf. As you can see, Tiger dominated golf for so many years by consistently winning. Rory only has 3 wins so far..so definitely it is nothing at all...

Why can't Rory Mcllroy be "Rory Mcllroy"? Why do we have to anoint talented people to be the next someone else? Young Rory has a long way to go before anyone can say he's the "second coming" of Tiger Woods. With all the young guns who are in the golf world today, it remains to be seen if anyone can eclipse the run that Tiger has had. We still don't know if he's finished yet! I wish Rory continued success and hope he does not get caught up in the hype about being the next "Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead or Bobby Jones!"

During your coverage of McIIroy?s win, one anchor stated that the young man is "more reserved, more humble and more human" than Tiger Woods. It is silly to compare a man of twenty two to one of Tiger`s age. Perhaps having someone compare twenty two year old Tiger to the nwe champion would have been more meaningful. The anchor`s statement about Tiger`s humanity hardly deservers commentary. Please be more thoughtful with your comments. Banter is not responsible reporting.

It seems as though Rory is much more knowledgeable than many of these journalist and news anchors are that want to compare him with Tiger in his prime. I admire McIlroy and his professionalism but I am not ready to anoint him as the next "great one" just yet. Although he did set a tournament record for low total at 16 under; it goes without saying that Congressional was a "soft" course and did not have the US Open conditions that we are accustomed to seeing. Many pin placements were easier than many weekly PGA tournaments and when players can spin back balls from out of the rough; the greens are too soft and the rough too low. 20 players finished under par this year! From the 2000 through 2010 US Opens (eleven tournaments), a grand total of 19 players have finished under par. 4 of those US Opens had zero players finish under par and plus 5 won twice.

Until he plays more golf on the US tour and wins on a more regular basis, it is not fair to compare - just yet.
