African-American unemployment at 16 percent

The economy and jobs will be big issues in Washington again this coming week.

While unemployment among the general population is about 9.1 percent, it's at 16.2 percent African Americans, and a bit higher still for African American males.

CBS News correspondent Michelle Miller reports that, historically, the unemployment rate for African Americans has always been higher than the national average. However, now it's at Depression-era levels. The most recent figures show African American joblessness at 16.2 percent. For black males, it's at 17.5 percent; And for black teens, it's nearly 41 percent.

For some, it's crunch time at STRIVE, a job training program in East Harlem, where instructors use drill sergeant-like techniques. They teach job-seekers to correct their mistakes by fining them a quarter each time they make them.

For young men of color, especially black males in New York City, things are especially bad. According to the think tank, the Community Service Society, 34 percent of New York's young black men age 19 to 24 are not working.

"If you haven't connected with the world of work by the age of 25, it's a permanent problem for the rest of your career," says David Johns with the Community Service Society.

Christopher Scott, 20 and a high school drop-out, got a GED last year, but he hasn't been able to find a job ever since.

"It makes me feel degraded in a way cause at 20, I should be more independent," Scott says.

For those with less than a college education, finding a job alone isn't the answer. Even if they secure employment, it's often below minimum wage, and in places like New York City, it's barely enough to survive.

Jermaine Christian, currently working as a restaurant busboy, graduated from one of the top high schools in the city in 2010. He can't afford college, so after searching for a year now, he works for $5.50 per hour.

"I became more or less desperate and took anything I could find," Christian says.

Job counselors say part of the problem is that high schools aren't teaching marketable skills.

"Unless you have a skill coming out of high school, in this society, in this economy, you will not be able to find a job," Johns says.

Even so, in this climate, where jobs are scarce, even having a real skill is still no guarantee of a job.

This is absolutely the time for our urban communities to come together a create and support our own businesses. I believe this is the number 1 problem we are facing in America.

There is very little our Government can or will do to help us make this change.

We have the power to do it ourselves we just need to start building until we can't build anymore.

We as African Americans alone spent 1 Trillion Dollars last year yet none of us owned any business that took home 1% of that. That's only 10 Billion dollars of the 1,000,000,000,000 we spent.

To put that into context Oprah is the richest African American woman in America and she is only worth 2.7 Billion which took her 25 Years to make.

That's just not right. The reason we are the most unemployed is because we own the least amount of businesses to higher ourselves.

Out of the 100% of businesses in America we as African Americans only own 2% of them. That the reason we have no jobs.

Everyone else creates jobs and hires their race and supports their cultures businesses. Why don't we?

I have never seen an African American or even White employee in any Chinese restaurant. Yet we go there and spend our money which doesn't come back to our community at all.

We need to focus on building WEALTH and forget everything else. It will still be there when we are done.

We all need to get on board and support the unions, they are one of the few organizing tools We the People have left. Besides how much we need them to set minimum labor standards for ALL workers (government and otherwise), they are HUGE allies in the Class War we are fighting with the right wing rich elites.

Without strong unions fighting against the fake free-trade agreements and giant corporations inviting undocumented workers in, we are toast. We should raise ALL wages and benefits to be in line with union shops. Or else.

16%? Anybody seen the inner cities lately? Like, since the 60's? There are a lot of success stories from the blocks. Schools, succeeddiinngg, in givin kids a chance. Seen the outer cities lately? Lots of failure. Always trying to find a way to make teachers instead of curriculum better. Money flows that way now. Besides R an R an R, what else is there?

Post the web address of your source olebasicgal,( because essentially what your saying is,
"I saw/heard it on the news.")

No, you won't because you even though that station has a web site it does not have the figures you state of 27.1% unemployment.

However ANYONE who wishes to Google the Wilcox county AL unemployment statistics from local/ state news and government sources will see it's actually 21.7%.

Now do we suppose this phantom news report got it wrong or that it's just possible you misread or misheard?

BTW You keep persisting with the fallacious notion that I post all night. I keep telling you this is a world wide web............

As I said you're not the brightest spark are you?

The vast number of African Americans who voted for Barrack Obama should rethink how well the "hope and change" rhetoric is working out for them (as well as the rest of the country). President Obamas extremist progressive policies have been a disaster. Both he and his failed policies need to go back to Chicago in 2012.

But the ones that voted for "Barack" Obama will understand that he alone can not reverse years of economic stress brought about by government (R and D) policies, yes -- but moreso by private sector greed and malfeasance. Then there is the aspect of personal responsibility.

Sorry Rob, people who voted for Obama would have to have a good alternative to drop him... and that just isn't gonna happen (at least not for center-to-left voters).

"African-American unemployment at 16 percent."
And to all African Americans who voted for Obama just so you can have your "first African American in the White House" and are now out of a job allow me to say the following: Hungry? Then go eat a big ol' bowl of hope and change! Sure, McCain wasn't much better but you wanted Obama, you voted for him so eat it! Like the Toyota commercial from years ago use to say..."You asked for it, you got it!"
