Vancouver "embarrassed" over post-game rioting

Vancouver was cleaning up Thursday from a riot the night before by angry fans of the city's National Hockey League team after the Canucks lost a deciding Game 7 in the league's final playoff series, giving the Boston Bruins the coveted Stanley Cup.

Rick Price, of CBS affiliate KIRO-TV in Seattle told early Show co-anchor Chris Wragge, "Seconds after the game ended, chaos began as rioters started overturning cars. Our crew did not see police anywhere in the beginning to stop it.

"As the anger over the loss to the Boston Bruins heated up, rioters set fire to the overturned cars, and eventually, riot police did move in.

"Police had closed the major bridges into downtown Vancouver during the height of the riot so people could not get into the heart of the city. Those bridges were re-opened by about 2:30 when we arrived in town.

"We did see ... a number of overturned cars still on the street (when daylight arrived on Thursday), quite a lot of broken glass, windows broken out of department stores and banks downtown.

"People are already starting to clean up, though, and glass repair trucks are literally everywhere."

But Price added, "People are already thinking beyond this. They're very embarrassed about it. They think it's given Vancouver a real black eye. I've already found a Facebook page this morning that's dedicated to organizing a cleanup, getting people volunteering, coming down to downtown Vancouver and helping between now and Saturday. ... (There are) a lot of people very embarrassed about this but there's also a lot of broken stuff."

Did anyone else catch Scott Pelley's comment after the Vancouver story? "Well, it is 'hockey' after all." I was astonished and have lost any respect I had for him as a journalist. What a stupid comment to make about a great sport who can boast some of the most philanthropic, ethical and moral athletes of all the professional sports! You never hear of hockey players boosting, driving drunk or shooting their girlfriends.

Too bad these riots don't happen where it would really count...like at Exxon, Shell, Chevron, Unocal, Halliburton, Blackwater, Lockheed Martin, the White House, Ten Downing Street, and at Wall Street.

Maybe if these crooks felt the wrath of the general public more, they'd not have such big balls to screw us.

Come on folks....focus your hostilities towards the people who deserve it...not over a petty game.

At least Vancouver can now have something in common with LA.

This is not an isolated accident. I live close to the I-5 border ..... the exact same thing happened in 94 when the Canucks lost to the Rangers. I'm not sure, but I seem to remember trouble in 1981?, too. It was particularly unsafe to bring a car with American plates into Vancouver for many months after the 94 loss.

Sorry to make generalizations, but there is something definitely wrong (in general) with the people from Vancouver who are of British descent. People from Victoria, the Island, a ferry ride north of Vancouver, and everywhere else I've ever been in Canada, they are very wonderful folks. But I'm sick of dealing with the selfishness and downright criminal nature of those from Vancouver.
