Congress starting ATF "gunwalker scandal" probe

Congress holds its first hearings Monday on the "gunwalker scandal" that CBS News first uncovered back in February.

Officials at the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) encouraged gun shops to sell thousands of assault rifles and other weapons destined for Mexican drug cartels.

On "The Early Show" Friday, CBS News Investigative Correspondent Sharyl Attkisson reported those who defend the strategy say their goal was to let the little fish go -- to get the big fish. But insiders say, in the process, lives were needlessly put in danger.

Attkisson initially broke the story for CBS News.

Last June, about nine months into the ATF operation known as "Fast and Furious," suspects had "purchased 1,608 firearms for over $1 million in cash transactions at various Phoenix-area gun shops," according to internal documents obtained by CBS News. The documents indicate ATF already knew that 179 of those very weapons had turned up at crime scenes in Mexico, and 130 in the U.S.

Yet, ATF allowed some of the same suspects -- accused of being middlemen for Mexican drug cartels -- to continue to buy and transfer assault weapons. Sometimes, agents say, they videotaped the buys, but didn't interdict the guns.

Documents indicate intentions were good. The idea, according to those documents, was to "allow the transfer of firearms" to pinpoint big cartel crooks rather than the small-time traffickers supplying them.

Former New York State Deputy. Secretary of Public Safety Mike Balboni told CBS News, "They want to change the dynamic and truly go after the kingpin, so give the kingpin something that they can't resist -- this flow of weapons over 15 months -- and then track 'em, find 'em and take 'em down."

But several ATF agents strongly objected to letting any guns "walk."

Darren Gil was ATF's lead official in Mexico during "Fast and Furious." He told CBS News, "We're in the business of interdicting weapons; we're not in the business of putting weapons out there for criminals to use. And that's what happened in this case."

Attkisson reported that sources say putting electronic trackers on the guns usually wasn't possible and the number of weapons let on the street in Fast and Furious grew to more than 2,500.

One suspect allegedly purchased 20, even 40 weapons at a time, and at least 220 over the course of about a year. That included 178 AK-47-type assault rifles and three Barret 50-caliber rifles.

"Using our sources, and reviewing documents provided to us over the past four months," Attkisson said, "we've been able to piece together a disturbing picture of where 'Fast and Furious' guns have turned up so far: at a dozen seizures and crime scenes along the U.S. border and in Mexico.

Most notably, two turned up last December at the murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry in Arizona.

And documents obtained by CBS news indicate some of the weapons were recently found at a drug cartel shooting of a government of Mexico helicopter, as shown on a Spanish language website.

Even insiders appeared awed by the scale. Six months into the investigation, in March of last year, a senior ATF attorney under the Justice Department commented, "Every time I read this case, I am amazed at the amount of firearms we are talking about."

Acting ATF director Kenneth Melson and his deputy, William Hoover, are said to have been "briefed weekly" on the investigation.

ATF Special Agent John Dodson worried about all those guns hitting the streets.

Dodson said, "I don't think anybody really fathoms how long we're gonna be dealing with this. The gun is not gonna go away. It's not a one-time use."

Dodson is expected to testify at a hearing Wednesday along with two other special agents. Attkisson said Monday's hearing will explore whether the Justice Department has obstructed justice in withholding certain information from congressional investigators. That agency has said it's cooperating with the Inspector General's probe.

"Early Show" co-anchor Chris Wragge asked Attkisson if the ATF's plan of going after the big fish -- or large drug cartels -- has paid off. He asked, "Is there any proof this actually worked in any instances?"

"Not yet," Attkisson said. "The idea was to try to take down a major cartel. That didn't happen. Insiders say they still hope evidence they have gleaned from some of this operation that went on over 15 months may eventually help do that. So far, it has not done that. And the argument on the other side, from the insiders who did not approve of the strategy, said you never let one gun walk. It's too dangerous. Even if you're trying to get the big fish."

The Fast and Furious investigat?ion can not stop with the resignatio?n of Kenneth Melson, acting director of the ATF. We already know that other Federal agencies including DEA, ICE and Border Patrol were involved in Operation Fast and Furious. None of those agencies report to Kenneth Melson. Authorizat?ion for the involvemen?t of those other agencies had to come from higher up. Both BATFE and DEA report to Eric Holder and since the operation crossed his agencies, he was involved. Similarly, Border Patrol and ICE report to Janet Napolitano and since the operation crossed her agencies, she was involved. Since the operation crossed department?s (Homeland Security and Justice) and those department?s report to Obama, he too had to have been involved -- it can really be NO other way.

We should also be concerned about the fact that just ahead of the hearings, administration officials are once again releasing BOGUS figures about guns recovered in Mexico. They are trying to blame US retail gun dealers for "70% of guns recovered in Mexico" I have some questions about their figures:

1) If US gun dealers are supplying the smugglers why did ATF have to order dealers to make the sales AFTER they reported the smugglers to ATF?

2) Why has not one dealer been charged with supplying gunrunners?

3) Why do diplomatic cables obtained and released by Wikileaks indicate that the vast majority of assault weapons recovered in Mexico are coming from Central America and the Mexican military?

4) Why is the administration using the carefully chosen words, "made or sourced through the US" as the fine print behind the 70% figure?

I can answer the last question: Because it lets the count any gun sold to the police or military of another country, which was later sold to Mexican cartels. In other words, if we sent an m16 (which cannot be bought in any gun story in the US) to El Salvador in the 1980's and some corrupt official sells it and a bunch of its' friends to the cartels, they count it as past of the 70%.

Less than honest? You bet. But par for the course for the people who were willing to ship guns to Mexican cartels in order to further a gun control agenda.

Spot on Vincewarde!

My answers to your questions -

1. Because the BATFE and AG Eric Holder are corrupt.
Holder and the Obama Administration allowed innocent Dealers to go ahead with the sales even though these legitimate dealers were doing the RIGHT thing by notifying ATF about these straw buyers. Holder and the ATF didn't care. They wanted these guns to walk, they pushed for these guns to walk. The guns they let purposely let walk were used in the killing of Boarder Patrol Agent Brian Terry. They have no shame.

2. Because the dealers are OBVIOULSY INNOCENT! Or they would have been charged. ATF, DOJ and Holder, (and if Obama knew of this whole scandal; how could he not? it's been going on for YEARS) THEY are the ones who are guilty of this and need to be charged.

3. Because they ARE.

4. You're own answer is exactly right. Plus, they are scared to death that they have been caught red handed and they are STILL trying to buy their way out of it. ALL of the weapons that were sent to Central America during the 80's by the Government to help fight the gorillas are now being bought up by the cartels. They count ANY weapon that has been MADE in the US as "guns coming from the US".

As soon as the ATF whistle blowers came out, ALL of the reports of "90% of guns come from the US" STOPPED. Now, the majority of the mainstream media, CNN, MSNBC, ABC...etc have totally ignored this Government scandal because it is so damaging to their anti-gun / anti Second Amendment agenda, which the Obama Administration has been "working under the radar" to try and use. This premeditated crime of letting guns walk was a (failed) catalyst for more gun control in the US.

It's shameful, disgraceful and utterly disgusting what they're doing to this country.
If Obama is taking credit for Osama's death because it was under his time in office,
Then he MUST take responsibility for this scandal that's happened under his time in office too.

Don't waste the time, money, or effort on this "congressional" probe!
These investigations have became nothing more than synonymous with concerted cover-ups!
Let's face it! The ATF has joined the ranks of organizations such as the NSA, CIA, FBI, and others as government-sponsored crime groups, nothing more!
They got caught this time...they'll have to be more careful the next series of criminal actions they commit!

"Intentions were good" my tallywhacker.

Licensed gun dealers dutifully reported criminal purchases of firearms to the BATF. BATF agents specifically told these dealers to ignore the law and sell multiple thousands of guns to these criminals.

While our government was feeding these guns to Mexico, the Obama administration received trace requests from Mexico on 7,200 guns, determined that 3,480 of them originated in America, promptly blamed the issue on "unscrupulous American gun stores in border states," and demanded new restrictions on our gun rights... to combat the problem that it turns out they created themselves by telling these honest dealers to ignore the laws already in place.

"We're from the government, and we're here to burn you."

WHAT Happened.?

He got caught supplying arms to the Mexican government and now he needs a scapegoat to draw attention away from himself. It boggles my mind that this Muslim Marxist Communist traitor is still in office.

"BATFE heads refuse to testify, only minor agents will be grilled by Congress I read."

Issa's setting the stage for a three act play. The first hearing is Monday and has career government attorneys laying out the legal basis for testimony before Congress and what is and isn't contemptuous of Congress. The second is set for Wednesday and Sen. Grassley will give the results of his investigation, followed by family members of the fallen officers.

I haven't yet heard about the third hearing, but I'm willing to be it will be an interesting day in Congress. That's when Holder, et al, will really start to sweat, watching people talk about what they were told to do by whom. I wonder if a lot of people have put in for retirement yet. If they retire, they MAY get to keep their pensions. If they get fired, I don't think so. Of course, I don't think they're allowed to collect pensions in prison, so the point may be moot.

Pop some corn. It's going to be quite a show.
