Study: Whites say they are racism victims

Despite ongoing racial disparities in America, whites believe they are victims of racism more than blacks, a new study finds.

According to the researchers, the study contradicts the notion of a "post-racial" society ushered in by President Barack Obama's election.

"It's a pretty surprising finding when you think of the wide range of disparities that still exist in society, most of which show black Americans with worse outcomes than whites in areas such as income, home ownership, health and employment," study researcher Samuel Sommers, a psychologist at Tufts University, said in a statement.

Sommers and his colleagues asked a nationwide sample of 208 blacks and 209 whites to complete questionnaires asking how much racial discrimination each group experienced from the 1950s onward. While both groups agreed on the amount of racial discrimination in the 50s, whites believe that racism against blacks decreased faster than blacks do. (Read: Rare Individuals Have No Racial Biases)

The biggest difference, however, was that whites believe that anti-white bias has increased as anti-black bias has decreased. On average, the researchers found, whites rated anti-white racism as more prevalent in the 2000s than anti-black bias by more than a full point on a 10-point scale. Eleven percent of whites said whites are currently "very much" targets of discrimination, compared with 2 percent of blacks who said blacks are "very much" discrimination targets.

The study suggests that whites see racial equality as a zero-sum game, in which one group wins at the other's expense.

"These data are the first to demonstrate that not only do whites think more progress has been made toward equality than do blacks, but whites also now believe that this progress is linked to a new inequality -- at their expense," Sommers and his colleagues wrote in May in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science.

I feel like most of the white people posting here are either racist, stupid, or on some conservative victimization. I once had a roommate in college suggest that racism was worse against whites and all but non-existent for blacks. Even though blacks have a tougher time finding a job even when equally qualified with whites...so please give up the Affirmative Action BS, it helps out white women waaaaaay more than black people. Later that year at my university some white students thought it would be nice to spread cotton balls around the black culture center on campus. Before you guys complain about that there was also a Asian Culture center and a Museum filled with European sculpture and Art. The next year someone put ****** Month on a statue on the campus. I left the University because of the racist crap there and I will never return. I used to be against Affirmative Action, I used to be pro-equality but after studying race and just taking my blinders off I realized that white people have a problem with other races, especially blacks. Not all of you guys are like that but study after study shows this. What do you expect blacks to be like? How do you think you would be if you were viciously discriminated against for 500 years? Well if you study any other group, not black, around the world that went through similar things, some even for shorter periods, they face the same problems of wealth, educational attainment. And when we do do the right thing and rise above our circumstances you guys try to find a reason to put us back down. I just don't get it...I know black people have lots of problems to solve but don't sit there and act like you guys are perfect. Btw, the Native Americans face the same problems we do, crime rates, poverty you name it...it's just you guys put them on ******* reservations so you never hear about it. That's all.

Although I agree with some commentators that the survey is flawed, unnecessarily making it a narrow "white" vs "black" dynamic, the historical facts are that we whites have always been the most racist, particularly in the U.S. Since 1776 we made the laws to exclude non-whites from all the privileges we claim for ourselves - property ownership, education, business opportunities, access to quality healthcare, etc. etc. etc. The U.S. has always had an "affirmative action" program - it is "whites first". This only STARTED to change in the 1960's. Any whites who don't acknowledge this truth, have blinders on. Period. Whites are accustomed to our "privileges" as a "natural right" of entitlement. White entitlement still rules, in spite of a Black president, or the few wealthy and successful Blacks and other non-whites. As a nation we have to start from recognizing these facts.

Before we get all emotional about the premis of this article, we need to know more about how the socalled study was conducted (besides sample size), who sponsored it, etc. Remember, these types of studies can be made to say what ever the author wants it to say. Frankly, I don't believe a word of it.

In my opinion,
It is true that the whites of this generation see themselves as prosecuted, but their ancestors in the country had persecuted the blacks...I'm not saying that there is balance, no...indeed if it is true then the balance is off.
It may take a generation more before final equality is established between all the american races.
However, I do believe the "other than white" races will not have the same rights the white races have enjoyed and will be more controlled by government than ever before.
For example the right to bare arms....It used to be easy to purchase a weapon, not anymore...
Economic rights, it seems in right to work states obvious changes have to be made to deny employers to fire anyone over a right anyone has like the right to free speech. I read an employer fired an employee for just saying he was voting for Obama. Is that fair?
Prison, more blacks make up the prison roles than ever and is growing. The percentage of incarserations increase, yet white criminals are still getting away with murder. Especially in areas where race is a sensitive issue....along with religion.

Isn't that what you really mean, lol? The "past abuse of slavery" (150 years ago) is what you are using to justify the admitted current persecution of whites "to level the playing field" (batter down americans to the point that others can "succeed."

And why is this all about BLACKS? THERE ARE TONS of other races too! (And many of them brought to America with a similar "grievances" that are so much the point of t.v. movies, books, school education, etc.) Given all this, do you REALLY HONESTLY think there is some intended END to this?

The white protestants who actually CREATED the founding documents (only three catholics were there, no jews) are totally a non-energy in some of the best thinking they (and only they) could offer. Well... A) LOL, whites are ALREADY a very serious minority in the, not "western world," but ENTIRE world, at about 8%. But also, there are serious subgroups of whites within that who would really like to have a place to live and express their unique folkways, culture, way of life, the way they tried in the constitution of the us, which for persecuted protestants CUT OUT the military and military spending (so that they could "live and let live" and finally have a home (but that ended for them in the space they tried to create to live in).

So: Maybe less angry about "becoming a minority," but t about more HOW THAT CAME ABOUT, the system of policies, propaganda, movie, t.v., film, that incentivized people to get rid of them, and also swept horrible things under the rug, didn't report ect.

They question WHEN A PEOPLE drop from 30% of world to 7% overnight, or from 90% of a country to 40% overnight---- and this is NOT NATURAL, obviously.

The idea that white people "invented racism" is nuts. Ethnic conflict is as old as the world (maybe you should read some history!) AND the term itself came from a jewish communist (Trotsky).

Finally---- all white people are not exactly alike. Don't generatlize. There is diversity within groups that have white skin, totally different histories, totally different religions, wars between themselves etc.

It's just like in africa, lol. Like Hutus and tutsis or whatever. They are all black, but the ethnic conflict led to total genocide.

There still is no comparison of racism against blacks vs whites. It would be wonderful if racism did not exist at all but it does. It exists becaue there are still wrongly held views of Black Americans and for some people not all, dark skin color is all that it takes for some whites to hold racist views. This can apply to some blacks as well but by a much lesser degree and also due to a past bad racial experience.

It is quite funny listening to all this assertions of whites being discriminated upon. A black Master's degree holder earns $6000 less than his white counterpart with a Bachelors. Blacks spend about twice as much time securing a job after graduation than their caucasian classmates and a 'black sounding name' applicant is 50% less likely to be called up for a job interview. All this facts were quantitatively deducted from well documented experiments and studies within the past six years.

As a staff member of a major university hospital I can tell you that your chances of getting into medical school or obtaining employment as staff are greatly improved if you are anything but white. Your statistics are outdated, more minorities are accepted and hired than whites and it gets worse every year. They don't want the smartest, they want diversity. I am a white man and I am at a huge disadvantage when it comes to higher education and job-seeking. I know, I live it, if you disagree it is because you aren't there.
