McCain: If U.S. uses torture, nation will suffer

Sen. John McCain, the Arizona Republican who was a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for five and a half years, has rejected the argument that torture was necessary to successfully combat terrorism - and denied claims that waterboarding detainees provided intelligence that helped end the manhunt for Osama bin Laden.

On Thursday McCain spoke passionately on the U.S. Senate floor about waterboarding and other forms of torture (referred to by some as "enhanced interrogation techniques") that some former Bush administration officials (including former Attorney General Michael Mukasey and former Secretary Donald Rumsfeld) claim gave the U.S. the information that led years later to the hideout of Osama bin Laden.

Bin Laden death reignites debate over CIA tactics

On CBS' "The Early Show" Friday, McCain denied claims made by Rep. Peter King, the Republican chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, who said earlier this week that through the use of such tactics, a courier for the al Qaeda leader was identified. "We got vital information, which directly led us to bin Laden," King said.

"The fact is that this courier was identified first by a person who was not been held in U.S. custody," McCain said. "In fact, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed not only did not tell the truth about this courier, he even tried to mislead the interrogators by saying that the courier had retired, gotten married, and lived in Peshawar!"

McCain told anchor Erica Hill this highlights the fact that, "If you inflict enough physical pain on someone, they will tell you whatever they think is necessary to get that pain to stop.

"Through normal, conventional interrogation techniques - and by the way I've seen it in Bagram - and with without these enhanced interrogation techniques, we can get more accurate, more valuable information," McCain continued. "And most importantly, preserve our commitments by our Constitution, by the Geneva Conventions, and by other agreements, that we will not practice cruel and inhumane treatment on people who are in our custody."

McCain said the example America sets for the world - including our treatment of prisoners - is important.

"I'm deeply concerned about who we are as a country, and what we stand for and believe in," McCain told Hill. "America has always been an example, and an inspiration to other countries throughout the world, and if we practice torture and do things that diminish, and even harm the image of the United States, and motivate our enemies, then it could have profound consequences in the future.

"We didn't do it to the Japanese war criminals," he said. "We didn't do it to the Nazi war criminals. And think of what would happen if in another conflict an enemy, not a terrorist organization, takes Americans prisoner, then obviously they will feel that they could do the same thing that we have practiced."

"And by the way - when someone inflicts torture on someone, it does great damage not only to the person who receives it, but also the person who engages in it."

In response to today's twin bombings at a paramilitary training center in northwestern Pakistan that killed at least 80 people - for which the Taliban has taken credit, saying it was in retaliation for the U.S. raid on the al Qaeda leader's Abbottabad hideout - McCain said that despite bin Laden's death, "This struggle against radical Islamic extremism is a long way from over."

Pakistan twin bombings kill scores of recruits

"And to somehow think we can now withdraw from Afghanistan and not have to worry any more - we're finding out as recently as yesterday that we are having problems with home-grown terrorists. So the struggle is going to go on for the rest of the 21st century.

"We can't let Afghanistan return to a base for attacks on the United States of America," he told Hill.

Good grief, torture people. OMG, we do not want to be like all the other countries. Just think of what Congress and the President let the **** and Nazis do to 'all' their captives. The **** even ate parts of captured soldiers. What have all the nice Muslims been doing to Dan Pearle and their captives. Do as you enemy does and maybe the enemy will not do what he does. The politicians failed to punish many of the bad guys in WWII. Just think, Nazis murdered 6M Jews, but they also killed 20M Russians. Get your head on straight.

After reading the procedure used in waterboarding I have changed my opinion. It's just plain torture. Google "waterboarding" and read or view the method used. I understand the need to gain information, but not this way. What if people receive this treatment and are innocent or don't have any information to give?

He's right, but it won't make any differance to the republicans. limbaugh wants people tortured and he wants to see it. and since he is the best representative of republicans, there is nothing McCain can say that will change anything for them. the 'Americanism' that McCain is talking about is not any part of the modern republican party. chickenhawks that want to watch torture on their TV's is what we're dealing with here.
you know it's true!

It really doesn't matter whether the use of torture led to getting bin Laden. The use of torture is wrong. It is illegal, a violation of our own laws, and more important it drags us down to the level of the animals we are fighting - it is morally repugnant. It also the fertilzer that feeds anti-American sentiment among those that otherwise might be sympathetic to our cause ultimately resulting in more, not less American casualties.

Our cause is, as it should be, about justice, not revenge. (revenge is such a pathetic emotion) It should also be about retaining what makes this country different than much of the world. A respect for the law and human rights. I shed no tears for bin Laden, he earned his fate through his hatred and evil ways. But this country does not have to crawl through the gutter to obtain justice. When we do that we are no better than those we are fighting.

DANIEL 11 - PROPHECY FULFILLED!

CONCLUSION
The expansive prophecy recorded in Daniel 11 shows the political maneuverings of the powers which fought over and ruled Judea and the Jews throughout the period of the 70 weeks prophecy earlier given to Daniel (Dan. 9:24-27). These powers included the northern Seleucid kingdom of Syria, the southern Ptolemaic kingdom of Egypt, the Jewish Hasmonean dynasty, the Roman Empire, and Rome's vassal in Judea, Herod the Great. Like many prophecies, this one is likely dual in some ways; events that have occurred in ancient times could be replicated at the time of the end. Obviously, Antiochus IV and Herod the Great are antetypes of the coming Antichrist. But to assign much of this prophecy to a yet future time is to miss the fact that this prophecy conclusively shows God is in control and world events happen according to His plan and purpose.

Not only do I disagree, but I think your Bible Belief and Understanding are wrong. I never found anything in the Bible that said my life was preordained or predicted by God if there really is a God. The Prophecies of the Bible were given because God understood the hearts of men, and what they will do or are capable of doing if left alone with "Free Will".Thank you Fred

The people against tough interrogation techniques have to ask themselves if they are willing to allow loved ones or themselves to be killed based on those principles, if the answer is yes then I understand why you would never use those techniques on a terrorist. Speaking for myself his discomfort in no way equals the preventable deaths of innocent family members, friends, or citizens if using those techniques gains info that could save those lives, it's that simple..

So now all of you Faux Nooze junkies have a problem. Your hero, the guy you voted for for president, disagrees with the garbage that the Bush/Cheney/Rove crime syndicate have been spewing lately. Decisions, decisions, what will you do. On the one hand, McCain, who you thought was the greatest thing since Reagan, has betrayed the party line. On the other hand, you know he is right, but accepting that would be heretical to the likes of Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity, and all of the other Republican demi-gods whom you worship. A real nut buster, isn't it?

BS... They were all in on it not just Bush.. wake up. We got what we needed .. stop being a whiny Liberal.. It's pathetic.

So Khalid Sheik Mohammed - who has been in Gitmo since 2004, provided the "actionable intelligence" that led to bin Laden's death?

Don't tell me - he "got letters from home" keeping him up to date, right genius?
