Dangerous synthetic drugs gaining popularity

Fake pot and "bath salts" that mimic the effects of marijuana and cocaine are among synthetic drugs growing in popularity. Not only are they making people sick, the number of those seeking medical treatment because of these drugs is skyrocketing. And for some users, the drugs have proven fatal.

"Early Show" Consumer Correspondent Susan Koeppen reports there's growing concern over the use of synthetic substances because they're easy to find and, in some cases, perfectly legal to buy.

An "Early Show" staffer, Koeppen showed, had no problem scoring fake pot and bath salts.

Synthetic drugs mimic marijuana, cocaine and ecstasy, and they're having powerful effects on users.

Dr. Tony Scalzo, of Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis, said, "We're seeing patients who are nauseous, vomiting, getting agitated, paranoid, have to come to emergency departments.

A Kentucky mom, Koeppen reported, blamed the side effects of snorting bath salts after she was arrested for assaulting her child. In Minnesota last month, a 19-year-old died and 10 others went to the hospital after using a synthetic drug similar to ecstasy.

And in  Indianola, Iowa last June, Michael Rozga's 18-year-old son David, killed himself after getting high on synthetic pot.

Michael Rozga said of the drugs, "It takes away your sense of reality, and puts you in such a terrible place, that you'll do anything to get away from it."

According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, the use of bath salts has lead to 1,511 trips to emergency rooms so far this year, compared to just 302 cases in all of 2010.

And the number of poisonings from synthetic pot is staggering. Between January and March of this year, 2,120 cases have been reported, compared to 155 cases in the same period in 2010.

Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Gary Boggs said people are getting substances with no clue what they're getting into."They have no idea what their strength is," he said.

The DEA has temporarily banned five substances used to make fake pot. But in a hearing on Capitol Hill Wednesday, Rozga called for a nationwide ban on synthetic substances.

He said, "When we think of something as being fake, we think of something as being inferior. I submit to you that fake marijuana and fake cocaine are anything but inferior in strength and anything but safe."

Koeppen added that nine deaths have reportedly been linked to the use of synthetic drugs. Legislation named after David Rozga has been introduced in the Senate and would ban the chemicals used to make the fake pot.

My boyfriend and I both tried Red X Dawn Liquid one night for our one year anniversary. Front label read "mood enhancer". Next thing I know i am waking up in the SICU after being in coma for 9 hours with a breathing tube because I had respiratory failure. My heart rate was down to 30 and all they found in my toxicology was caffeine. These synthetic drugs should not be on the market. I almost lost my life.

You are incorrect in saying these drugs shouldn't be on the market because you specifically had a more than unpleasant time with them. Do research, don't just look at a bottle and decide ok time to try this drug. Actually learn what Red X Dawn Liquid is before taking it in, just like with any other drug. Don't try to condemn the drug itself that MANY others have taken without problem because you had a problem. Just like the man in the article trying to blame synthetic pot for his son's suicide. That's ridiculous to say it clouded his mind into killing himself. Just absurd, take responsibility for your own actions instead of looking to the government to do it for you.

So instead of legalizing the sale of safe and natural cannabis to adults, we now have people turning to dangerous, synthetic chemicals to achieve what they're looking for? Are we preventing people from getting high? No. Are we getting them to do it in the safest way possible? No!

Marijuana has repeatedly been proven to NOT cause cancer, heart disease, brain damage, liver disease, emphysema, or any other significant health issue, and its addiction potential is about on par with coffee. The federal marijuana prohibition empowers the Mexican drug cartels and local drug dealers by preventing any form of legal competition to their activities. Instead of protecting children from marijuana, these laws create an environment of zero legal supply amidst massive and unrelenting demand which effectively serves to make our children LESS safe.

Just like with alcohol, we need marijuana to be legally sold to adults in supermarkets, gas stations and pharmacies in order to undercut local drug dealer prices and drive them out of our communities and away from our children. We've got to demand that adult marijuana sales be legalized everywhere that alcohol and tobacco are sold.

What these idiots don't realize is that the stuff they put on "fake pot" that gets you high is JWH-018 which is a cannabinoid. There are thousands of them in the marijuana plant. THC, the main cannabinoid in marijuana is the only one that's illegal. So once they outlaw JWH-018 they'll just synthesize another cannabinoid out of the thousands and start selling it. When will these idiots realize that people are always gonna find out ways to get high they will NEVER EVER stop people from doing drugs EVER no matter how hard they try it is just not possible so why don't they just legalize marijuana so people won't have to buy some "fake pot" on the internet not knowing what's in it?! Man I swear our lawmakers are seriously a bunch of retards with thick skulls and they'll never ever understand that the "War on Drugs" hasn't worked and will never work so let's stop wasting our tax money arresting and locking up these people for smoking a god d amn plant it is utterly ridiculous.

Jesus said to do unto others as we would have them to do unto us. None of us would want our child thrown in jail with the sexual predators for using a little marijuana. None of us would want to see our parent's home confiscated and sold by the police for growing a couple of marijuana plants to ease the aches and pains of growing older. It's time to stop putting our own families in jail. It's time to let ordinary Americans grow a little marijuana in their own back yards. This will go a long way toward putting the criminal drug gangs and "chemists" out of business for good!

This is impossible.

You may as well just try to ban the Table of Elements.

The reason so many dangerous synthetic drugs have gained popularity is because kids know they are not illegal.

The reality is that we need to legalize marijuana which is the soft-drug of choice of the majority. This would stop all of this development of 'legal' alternative drugs like 'bath salts', etc.
