Tiger's blood and Adonis DNA, served up
Charlie Sheen may not trust AA to help him get sober, and in the meantime, he's inspiring others to make drinks.
Mixologists across the country have been inspired by the actor's erratic behavior and quotes from multiple television interviews as they try to decide just what exactly "winning" would taste like.
"You get mesmerized watching him," said Flannery Good, a fashion consultant who writes the blog Fashionably Bombed with her sister Katherine, a former New York City bartender. "We thought, 'We have to do something with this.'"
They created the Charlie Sheeni Martini, which mixes blood orange juice, to represent how Sheen claims he has tiger's blood and Adonis DNA; blood-orange infused X-Rated Vodka, an homage to his interest in porn actresses; a splash of Rockstar energy drink, since Sheen is " tired of pretending like I'm not bitching, a total fricking rock star from Mars," and finished off with a powdered-sugar rim.
Ninth Ward, a New Orleans-inspired bar in New York City put their "Charlie Sheen" on the menu this fall following the "Plaza debacle," when the actor was hospitalized after allegedly trashing his hotel suite, said Robert Morgan, one of the owners.
The drink is straightforward: "two and a half" parts Coca-Cola and Catdaddy Carolina Moonshine, an artisanal moonshine (yes, you read that right) with a sweet caramel taste.
"Everything goes well with Coke, and Charlie has such an alleged penchant for cocaine," Morgan said. "There's a powdered sugar, pun intended, rim around the glass."
Said Chbihi, the manager of Fifty Five, a Moroccan restaurant in New York City was watching Charlie Sheen interviews with a full bar at the restaurant when someone said that "they should bottle that."
So Chbihi started about doing it, creating a super spicy Bloody Mary that uses harissa and wasabi for an extra punch. They called it Tigers Blood with a dash of Adonis DNA.
A customer at the Crowne Point in White Plains, N.Y. challenged resident mixologist Jake Sher to make him a cocktail influenced by Sheen. Sher thought there was only one possible choice for booze.
"Sheen, being the kind of guy he is, well, a whiskey base would make the most sense," said Sher, who is putting the cocktail, Two and a Half Phenphen on the menu next week.
The finishing touch?
Sher uses a spray bottle of overproof Bourbon and creates a flame which smolders a piece of lavender.
"Some people think he is going to burn out," Sher said.
Sheen has even influenced bartenders to add an extra touch to perfect a cocktail. Payman Bahmani, a New York City bartender, cocktail consultant and blogger was tinkering with a drink when a friend suggested he call it the Charlie Sheen. Bahmani then decided that he had to add absinthe.
"Absinthe has a long history and mystique surrounding it - people thought it induces hallucinations and insanity," Bahmani said. "It's the reason why it was illegal in the U.S. for such a long time. So it was actually the perfect ingredient here."
The Charlie Sheeni Martini, from Fashionably Bombed
1 ounce tiger blood (AKA freshly squeezed blood orange juice)
1 ounce X-Rated Fusion Vodka
1 bitchin' rock star from Mars (AKA Rockstar energy drink)
1 briefcase full of cocaine (AKA 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar)
Add blood orange juice and vodka to a shaker with ice and shake vigorously until a frost forms on the outside of the shaker. Top off with Rockstar energy drink. Moisten rim of glass with blood orange and dip into a plate of powdered sugar. Drink directly through the eye. Now take that martini glass, wrap both arms around it and love it violently.
