60 Minutes/Vanity Fair Poll: March Edition

It is said that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. Since this winter has been particularly brutal in many parts of the country, let's hope for an early lamb-like spring. While we're at it, let's also throw in some fun diversions along the way that might lift our spirits and warm our hearts. How about Mardi Gras, Saint Patrick's Day and March Madness to name a few? Happy Spring, and now the 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair Poll results for March:

• How do you feel about replacing the N-word in Huckleberry Finn?

Fourteen percent of our respondents think that it's a good idea and 19 percent don't know how they feel about it. However, nearly two-thirds of Americans think that it would be a bad idea to edit out all references to the N-word in "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and replace it with the word "slave." Explaining Mark Twain's (Samuel Clemens') mindset, which was formed while growing up in mid-nineteenth century Midwestern America, might be a challenge. He used those experiences to write this American classic, and giving them historic context to young readers should be an example of what teaching is all about. It appears that this issue has provided students and teachers with a great opportunity for a teachable moment and a strong majority of Americans seem to agree.

You do not have the correct answer available in your poll - it's the food industry and their continued use of low-cost additives such as high fructose corn syrup, which is stored as fat and can't be converted into energy and burned as calories. Google high fructose corn syrup and Princeton and you will see that this has been 100% proven as fact, but the government continues to ignore this due to the lobbying of the powerful food industry. I am NOT an activist but this enrages me beyond words.

I like the comment "A quarter of Americans think that it would be great to retire between the ages of 50 and 55." but what does the stats show about longevity of those who do retire between 50-55 in comparison to those who wait till 65. If any of the heavy industry retirement stats are accurate, the earlier you get out the better. To lengthen your time on this side of the sod, you have to, along with planning for the pig, you also have to plan for your time. Keeping busy and depression at bay is the wisest plan.

and what do they think they are going to once they retire???????? Do they really think they are going to have the kind of money it will take to lead the life of luxury after they retire....EXCUSE ME---I do not think so----they are kidding themselves....they will have a rude awakening....Americans are the laziest of lazy-----why do you think 1/3 of the population is medically obses...easting is part of it but sitting in a chair in fron of the computer on on the couch in front of the tv will never do anything for their waistlines.... all you see these days are sloppy overweight people and the young girls with the spare tires???????PLEASE!!!!!!
