Ted Williams: Crack Was My "Drug of Choice"

Ted Williams says he's off the wagon and headed to rehab.

The "man with the golden voice" admitted on "The Dr. Phil Show" that he's been drinking again.

Only a few days ago, it seemed Williams had turned his life around after years of homelessness and substance abuse.

When a video made by a reporter who found him panhandling on the side of a Columbus, Ohio interstate highway ramp went viral, and Williams was interviewed on "The Early Show," he became an overnight sensation and had job offers rolling in.

But on "Entertainment Tonight," Williams conceded, "The cat is out of the bag. Yes. I've relapsed into a drink."

It was Dr. Phil McGraw who urged Williams to seek help.

"Have you had even a stumble in two-and-a-half years?" McGraw asked.

"With alcohol, I did," Williams responded. "And I can say honestly, Dr. Phil, it didn't lead me to my drug of choice, which was crack."

"How recently was that?"

In a two-week whirlwind, Williams had gone from anonymity to celebrity. But his genuine feel-good story still caused doubt and worry for both Ted and his 90-year-old mom, Julia Williams.

On "The Early Show," co-anchor Erica Hill observed to Williams, "Your stepdaughter has come out and said, 'You know, we're -- we're actually worried this (fame and money) could be a bad thing for Ted, that this fame, you know, could send him down the wrong path again. And that's how it started. You're (Julia) shaking your head that you're a little concerned, as well."

"Very concerned," Julia replied. "Very concerned."

"Well," Ted said, "I guess that that's rightfully said, because two years (his claim of having been clean at the time) is not a -- a great length of sobriety enough to say that I've got this mastered. It's one day at a time."

The first sign of trouble appeared as Ted Williams and his family reunited on "The Dr. Phil Show."

"Growing up, I felt abandoned," daughter Janey said.

At a Hollywood hotel, Ted and Janey were involved in an altercation. Police responded and brought the two in for questioning. A short time later, they were released without charges.

A badly shaken Janey spoke to Dr. Phil's producers. "Every single night, he gets drunk," she asserted.

Addiction specialist Ken Seeley told CBS News, "This is a really huge trigger, being reintroduced back to his family, coming from homeless (to) being famous overnight."

Seeley says Ted has to put recovery ahead of everything else. "He's at a crossroads right now," Seeley noted. "He could really make this work, or he could end up right back where he was very quickly."

I am clean and sober for 27 years and some days now. No doubt, they did not do this man a favor when giving him all the attention and ten minutes of fame. Unfortunately - he has not gotten honest with himself yet! What a sick joke that his "choice of drug" is crack. He has no choice - he starts drinking and sooner or later he is right back to his old tricks. What a phoney when he met his mother. He cannot keep going to rehab to get another fix and than return to the same baloney sooner or later. Recovery is a daily effort - not weekly monthly or once a year! It is true what they say: "An alcoholic will steal yor wallet and a Junkie will steal your wallet and then help you looking for it." I am looking at the latter.. Even though I've only seen him on TV - I could tell by his demeaner that he is a liar and con just like the ones I see coming to AA CA NA meetings just pulling another con on themselves... Sorry dude, the sober fairy waving his sober and clean wand is on a long vacation. Getting honest and putting the plug in the jug is a good beginning.. NO MORE FREE FISH. Just think how his mother must feel. She was on the right track when she added her comments to his latest "Recovery" story. She was reluctant to believe him. He put his Mother through living hell and has not made one amend yet. ! Yest Jerk - there is such a thing as Step 9 - if you wnat to remain clean and sober.

A drug is a drug is a drug. Alcohol abuse can easily lead Ted Williams back into crack (or meth, or whatever else is available).

Seems like an awful lot of inventory-taking here. I'm not sure how that carries the message to the still-suffering alcoholic. He's getting help. Instead of vitriol, I offer him prayers and fellowship.

Being sober for over 23 years, I understand what Ted Williams is going through. I have never replapsed in 23 years. Ted Williams has not been able to seek the correct treatment until now. Alcoholics or drug abusers need a stable environment, and a good program. No matter what Ted does, we need to support him, he deserves this chance. Way to go Ted, it does work.

It's funny that the haters are usually jealous of someone's success and cheering there demise as if they knew it all along. Put the shut to the up! I, personally, hope this man can successfully fight his demons and win the battle. For you nay-sayers, go take a good hard look at yourself in the mirror.

All you haters must stop to realize that he is only human for God's sake. Geesh, to live as pure and perfect as you folks do, it must be so very, very hard.

Homeless man turned overnight success was given opportunities he wasn't ready for, going very far very fast...I was afraid this would happen. I wish you well, Ted Williams. Nice and slow upon discharge from the rehab and you will be fine.

I've only known 1 man who ever turned his life around after being a drunk for years. When it finally happened it was astounding. But I have to say, it can only happen when and if the person chooses to WANT it, you can't wish it on someone.

I have my doubts about this Ted Williams guy, because it doesn't seem like he is truly serious about his life, at least not yet. The media doesn't seem to understand that all the wishes in the world cannot make a person sober.

It takes more than PRAYERS. Only he can do it. I have been in AA for 23 years and most do not make it. I wish him well but he must follow the REHABS instructions. I never went to a rehab, but I SHOULD HAVE. I struggled in the begining, but I and others have made SOBRITY THEIR PRIORITY. NOT MONEY

Didn't anyone mention the 'anonymous' part to you ??

This guy is a real loser. If he really wanted to turn his life around, he would have done so nearly twenty years ago. I think it hilarious all of the gullibility that elevated this man to someone deserving of praise and reward.

Well, on one hand, I am happy to know that people ARE so willing to give second chances.

The danger is when the second chance gets forced on someone who isn't really ready to take control of their life...you jsut can't manufacture a life turn-around for someone, despite what all of these idiotic "Reality TV" producers believe.

...the guy flat out lied to all of the gullible claiming he was clean and sober for two years and it was lapped up like mother's milk...the media should have let this guy alone after getting him some agency assistance, which is what he should have gotten in the first place...the more this guy is kept in the news, the more unsavory details about his past surface...like him abandoning his wife and nine kids...well, I guess that figures, since he didn't have anything to do with his own mother for ten years...so inspiring and uplifting...
