Dad of Tucson Victim, 9: Execute Gunman

On Sunday, "Early Show" co-anchor Erica Hill sat down with Roxanna and John Green, the parents of the Christina Green, the youngest victim of Saturday's massacre in Tucson that claimed the lives of six people.

The couple spoke of their deep love for their child at a time of unspeakable pain and sorrow.

Hill said when John and Roxanna Green think about their 9-year-old daughter, Christina, they remember everything she loved about life.

John Green said, "She had a lot of interests, ballet, gymnastics, singing, dancing. She just got a guitar for Christmas. She was the only girl baseball player on her Little League team this fall."

Now, less than 48 hours after their daughter's death, they want everyone else to know about their little girl.

Roxanna Green said, "She was very active in the community, and she was going to visit Gabrielle Giffords because she wanted to learn more about how she could help the community -- even at such a young age. What she could do. What she could learn. It was going to be a learning experience for her."

But Christina's young life was cut tragically short -- with one bullet.

"You don't think this happens to you as a parent. I mean, it's not gonna happen to you," John Green said. "There's no script on how to prepare or how to handle it when it happens to you."

In a bitter coincidence, Christina was born on September 11, 2001.

John Green said, "You know, I've said it before, but the bookends of her life -- she came into the world on a tragedy on 911, and she went out on this tragedy yesterday in Arizona. But everything in-between has been wonderful, and she's affected a lot of people."

"We're just gonna keep on remembering her forever," Roxanna Green said. "She was a special little girl."

Hill noted, "This has become a little political, on both sides, people pointing fingers. Talking about that. Is that hard for you to hear?"

Roxanna Green said, "I haven't listened to any of it, so I don't really know, but I can imagine."

"That just makes me even more angry," John Green said. "That's not what this is about. This is a random act of cowardice."

"A senseless act," Roxanna Green added.

John Green continued, "It shouldn't be used for that. People need to realize that you know, you don't settle your issues with guns. If you have issues handle it directly with the person."

Hill noted, "There's a man who's being held as a suspect in your daughter's death. Is there anything that you want to see happen in terms of justice for your own sake, for the person who killed your daughter?"

John Green said, "My wife is very forgiving in that regard. I'm a little about the Old West. It's a fairly clear-cut case, and I'm a fan of capital punishment in this regard."

Hill asked him, "Would you say anything to him if you had the opportunity?"

"No," he said. "I wouldn't care to even talk to the guy, because that would, that wouldn't change anything. My daughter's gone and she's not coming back. Again, that would be a waste of breath."

Hill asked, "Do you feel like Christina's smiling down on you right now. Looking over you?"

John Green chokced up and replied, "She is, she is."

Roxanna Green said, "She'll always be with us. She's always a little bright light in our little family, and she touched everyone that met her. And she always will, she'll always be with us. She was a very special, beautiful little girl."

Hill pointed out that Christina was brought to the event by a neighbor, Susan Hileman. Hileman's husband, William told CBS News that Hileman was shot three-to-four times in the leg, hip, abdomen and chest. All of the bullets, Hill said, exited and she is expected to recover. She is stable, but has a long recovery ahead. Her husband told CBS News the most difficult part of her recovery is going to be the challenge of learning to live with Christina's death.

Hill added, "(Christina) was an incredible force and will, of course, be missed."

What happened is very unfortunate and no one deserves that to happen to them. What I despise about our country is that we sit back and see problems yet no one wants to open their mouth to get involved. The problem I have with that is this; Congress, the state, and federal government want to interfere in people's lives and citizens want to get involved in other people's business if it means keeping up mess or just being plain nosey, or idolizing them, but when it comes to doing the right thing by speaking up or reporting something that is potentially dangerous, to help someone, or that could possibly save a life no one wants to do the right thing. Everyone run away from the problem or pretend it doesn't exist. This young man didn't wake up with mental problems he had issues a long and no one took the responsibility (family, friend or foe) to see that he received the help he needed. I don't know him from anything and I know you can't always tell a person is unstable by how they look but some you can and this guy looked unstable to me and probably showed signs of it, yet no one intervened. Even sadder sometimes people who need help beg for it but don't get it due to no insurance. A person who is mentally unstable isn't capable of thinking completely rationally. There are a whole lot of things that undoubtedly contributed to this young man doing what he done and a lot of it probably has to do with how he's been treated by others. People must realize that you can only push a person so far before they break whether that person is known as unstable or driven to become that away. There is so much going on in this world. Taking guns away won't fix it because then you take the power from innocent people who may need to protect themselves one day and a gun is all they may have. People have been getting guns forever and whether they are legal or not people will get them just as they do drugs and everything else. In my opinion I feel that society isn't looking at the real truth and that is the division within this country. Congress is so busy being divided until most times it seems like they're fighting more amongst each other than anything else. This country is divided and the rich suck the life out of the ones whose trying to make it. No one ever seem to consider how a person who is struggling from paycheck to paycheck feel's when their normal bills are jacked up because businesses are allowed to add taxes at their leisure to continue to run their business while that person's paycheck is the very same. People are frustrated because everythings rising but the paychecks and folks are becoming desperate and those who are remotely unstable are coming even more unstable because they're not getting help. Those who aren't known as being unstable are driven into being that away and becoming depressed, suicidal, and homicidal because of trying to survive in these trying times. If you all don't believe it just think about all of the unnecessary killings and other crimes that has taken place. There are many committed out of desperation. Many are losing faith in everything. Lastly, society must stop acting so shocked when things happen, there's always the potential but no one does a thing until it happens. There are always signs if people just take heed. People don't want to face the truth, but facing the truth and dealing with it could possibly save lives. God bless all who were affected by the tragedy.

I am praying for John and Roxanna Green. But I was compelled to write this comment and I hope you are able to use it in some way. While you may feel like you and Christina got robbed of her young life, we all must reognize that she was called and she had to go. Our 18 year old daughter left us on 8/5/09 and I feel cheated. Our time together came to an abrupt end while we were on vacation. We must somehow make it pass the whys and how come. James Hackett

No matter what they do to this guy, they can't take back the damage that has been done or the pain that has been caused. So though it seems like it matters, it really doesn't matter. What matters is that we pull ourselves together and do what can be done to prevent this kind of tragedy from happening again: why was a mentally deranged young man able to so easily purchase a semi-automatic weapon? The Army rejected him. College kicked him out. How many clues should have been available in a background check? Why do we allow the sale of extended magazines? They were illegal for many years because of incidents like this-- wherein one nutcase can shoot 30 people without having to reload.

This tragedy happened in Arizona. I think it's time for a good old fashioned hanging. I wouldn't mind seeing Mark Kelly and John Green, (representing victim families), pulling the lever to drop this guy either, on CBS live. A message has to be sent that this type of violent behavior, IS NOT going to be tolerated in our society. Lethal injection is too good for some goof ball that kills innocent children or anybody for that matter in cold blood like he did.

There should have been a local cop at the event. I heard a report that there wasn't one there at the time of the shooting, though I'm unsure of the report's accuracy. A local cop at an event like that might have these imkbeciles think twice, with a cop and his gun standing in the mix.

Question; Are the politicians coordinating with local police when they set up and meet constituents at these type of events? I don't know this answer myself.

You might like living in Iran. They are really into public executions there. I don't mean offense, it's just something to consider.

I do agree there should have been a cop at the event.

We should execute him. Eye for an eye right? Just like Jesus taught. Let's do the Christian thing and kill him.

In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus said: "You have heard it said, `an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, do not set yourself in violent or revengeful resistance against an evildoer." (Matthew 5:38)

What an absolute tragedy. But this is what happens when people get caught up in the hate-filled rhetoric of those who hide behind their microphones. A little girl is dead, along with several others, and a congresswoman is fighting for her life. And it's all because we can no longer agree to disagree; we no longer debate.

There will never be justice but hopefully the punishment will deter another person from committing such an act. I also hope the courts see to it that any appeals after his conviction are speedy so that his execution can take place promptly. Three cheers for those that helped to save the lives of some of the victims and those that stopped him from shooting even more people by taking him down.

It makes me sad, and discouraged about the future of our country, that so many people want to respond to violence with violence. We need to stop valuing violence.

The ideal solution would be to turn back time and lock this bastard up before he acted. Since we can't do that, the best we can do is put him in the same place as the worst-offended of his victim, that is DEAD. While it is true that this won't bring any of his victims back, it is the closest we can get to justice. This isn't about violence; it is about a punishment that fits the crime. Despite the teachings of Jesus, which overturn much of Old Testament teaching, I still believe that "an eye for an eye" is the best expression of justice.
