How Giffords Survived Being Shot in the Brain

Doctors say more than 90 percent of gunshot wounds to the brain prove fatal, and more than two-thirds of victims die before receiving hospital care.

But Rep. Gabrielle Giffords survived an assassination attempt Saturday in which she was shot in the brain.

How has she seemingly beaten the odds?

CBS News Medical Correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton says the surgery on Giffords on Saturday was "critical to her survival. It's called a decompressive craniectomy. … The hair gets shaved. The scalp gets flapped backwards, and a large portion of the cranium skull bone is drilled away. (That area of the skull left open, with the brain covered by a synthetic material and then scalp, so that the brain can swell and not have any vital blood supply or tissue compromised) That portion remains in a refrigerator for up to, potentially, two-to-three months, and (that area of the brain) is left open so the brain can swell and not impair other parts of the brain."

Controlling the swelling's impact is also critical, Ashton told "Early Show" co-anchor Erica Hill Monday.

The bullet's path once it entered Giffords' brain was also key, Ashton pointed out, noting, "The bullet went through the rear left portion of the brain, and exited through the front left portion of the brain. … Critical structures, which tend to be located deeper and more centrally in the brain, were miraculously spared, as were some major blood vessels that also are in the midline, and the bullet did not cross from the left to the right side of the brain - also very important."

The left side of the brain, Ashton says, is, basically, "the speech center. We know the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body, so interpreting speech and being able to speak all potentially could be affected by any type of injury to the left side of the brain. That's why it's so encouraging to the doctors that, when she's asked to perform a simple command, like, 'Show me two fingers,' she's able to show two fingers. It will be important to know whether she's raising those fingers on the right side of her body or the left side."

This nutcase had it out for Gifford since 2007 when she could not give him an answer to a stupid question. I do not believe the rhetoric "this time" had anything to do with this shooting but who knows who else out there is being influenced by the nasty comments constantly and some are plain lies to keep the controversy going.

I have voted for 60 years and never seen politics so mean and hateful, guns strapped on to attend town hall meetings, signs of Presidental candidates painted up to look like Hilter, people carrying around monkeys, hangmen nooses, billboards along highway asking for a birth certificate, etc, etc, etc. It is non-stop, never ending and vicious.

Well, YrWrongAgain has let his rear end override whatever brain function he has left and expound on God's grace. The only thing that is truly undeserved here is YrWrongAgain. It is sad his parents had no children that lived.
This one was brain-dead on arrival.

While I give medical science its due measure of credit, if there is a higher power and he/she/it is not, in fact, the exclusive property of the right as they seem to prefer that I believe, then I pray that said power intervenes on behalf of this Democrat.

Given that she is a former Republican, I would think that any higher power would have to acknowledge that she has been struggling for redemption in the here and now rather than forcefully silencing her conscience until the fact of her approaching death becomes unavoidable - as is characteristic of so many of America's wealthy right.

(lollll..is funny to watch...righties get old, and suddenly they become both charitable and forgiving. Thinking they can buy a slot in heaven, I suppose.)

...as I said in another story, "some people are just idiots"...(The attackers, not for the bad angle, but for even having the slightest thought of even coming close to half way to even thinking of comprehending the plan that could even get them into position to even have the slightest prayer of attempting this sort of thing.)

This is an unspeakable tragedy. While we do not yet truly know whether this mad "boy" was part of a conspiracy to shoot this public servant (while killing and maiming others), it is easy to suspect this to be the case. As I am a conservative (not, ultra-conservative, but, relatively conservative in political and personal thinking), I have been EXTREMELY offended by blogs and FB entries (some by my friends...) that the right is responsible for these mad actions. Had to get that off my chest. My condolences to the families of those persons killed and harmed, as well as to Ms. Giffords' family.

The "Grace" of God has everything to do with her survival. Her job is not over as jet. Thank God for miracles.

The Grace of God also allowed this to happen. As so often happens with the Grace of God, it is undeserved.
