Julian Assange Given Press Freedom Award

BUCHAREST - A Romanian online publication known for its editorial independence is honoring Wikileaks founder Julian Assange for his service to press freedom, which it warns is under threat in Eastern Europe.

Cotidianul.ro said Saturday Assange was given the "Free Dacia" award for exposing the "duplicitous behavior of some democratic countries."

Wiklieaks has begun publishing some 250,000 classified U.S. State Department cables.

Cotidianul.ro said press freedom remains fragile in Eastern Europe, where a Hungarian media law allows for journalists to be taken to court and fined of up to $1 million (?760,000) for reports considered to be unbalanced.

Hungary took over the rotating European Union presidency on Saturday.

What a fitting tribute to the twilight of press freedom. The governments of the world will NOT stand by and LET THIS HAPPEN AGAIN... So--yes enjoy the fleeing moment while you can, because it(press freedom as we know it today) will not last. Funny how that works.. folks are given a particular freedom-- a very small number shamelessly abuse it--- almost begging to have that right overturned. Then it happens. Who pays for the selfish actions of the few.. THE MANY.

If the truth sets you free then why is being chastised for exposing crooks and collaborators of global political crimes. The UN and the Genral assebly got thier pants yanked down and noe no shovel is big enough to dig a hole wide enough. I do not agree with releasing the secrets however the most damaging amd embarassing part of the whole thing is the people who were brought to light don't know how or simply can't cover up thier deeds.They are real good at running thier chops when they think it is a secret but suddenly turn cowardice when thier opinons and statements are brought to light.I hope no lives are lost but if any are lost it is thier fault for thier underhanded actions not the actions of assange.

I find it interesting that a nation with a history of duplicity gives an award to an honoree (such a travesty of language) who used duplicitous methods to expose what said nation considers duplicitous conduct on the part of a nation 2000 miles distant. Perhaps they are counting on Julian to lead them from a wasteland only recently (1996) committing to changing leadership by ballot and still honoring witchcraft and fortune telling as honorable professions. Assange has found another hidey-hole to avoid prosecution for crimes America finds duplicitous.
