Ancient Teeth Prompt Questions of Humans' Origin

Two schools in Vancouver discovered packages containing a human foot and hand. Police said this could be the latest gruesome twist in the case of Canadian porn star Luka Rocco Magnotta, who is suspected of dismembering and eating his former lover. Global News' Elaine Young reports

JERUSALEM - Israeli archaeologists said Monday they may have found the earliest evidence yet for the existence of modern man, and if so, it could upset theories of the origin of humans.

A Tel Aviv University team excavating a cave in central Israel said teeth found in the cave are about 400,000 years old and resemble those of other remains of modern man, known scientifically as Homo sapiens, found in Israel. The earliest Homo sapiens remains found until now are half as old.

"It's very exciting to come to this conclusion," said archaeologist Avi Gopher, whose team examined the teeth with X-rays and CT scans and dated them according to the layers of earth where they were found.

He stressed that further research is needed to solidify the claim. If it does, he says, "this changes the whole picture of evolution."

The accepted scientific theory is that Homo sapiens originated in Africa and migrated out of the continent. Gopher said if the remains are definitively linked to modern human's ancestors, it could mean that modern man in fact originated in what is now Israel.

Sir Paul Mellars, a prehistory expert at Cambridge University, said the study is reputable, and the find is "important" because remains from that critical time period are scarce, but it is premature to say the remains are human.

"Based on the evidence they've cited, it's a very tenuous and frankly rather remote possibility," Mellars said. He said the remains are more likely related to modern man's ancient relatives, the Neanderthals.

According to today's accepted scientific theories, modern humans and Neanderthals stemmed from a common ancestor who lived in Africa about 700,000 years ago. One group of descendants migrated to Europe and developed into Neanderthals, later becoming extinct. Another group stayed in Africa and evolved into Homo sapiens — modern humans.

Teeth are often unreliable indicators of origin, and analyses of skull remains would more definitively identify the species found in the Israeli cave, Mellars said.

Gopher, the Israeli archaeologist, said he is confident his team will find skulls and bones as they continue their dig.

The prehistoric Qesem cave was discovered in 2000, and excavations began in 2004. Researchers Gopher, Ran Barkai and Israel Hershkowitz published their study in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.

These are some pretty shaky claims with so little to go on. First, get enough bone to get a DNA sample and confirm what species or subspecies they are dealing with. Second, date the finds with a reliable method. Until these two things happen, I'd say these are nothing more than wild claims by some "scientists" trying to make names for themselves.

Why are we, of the so called human race, so egotistical that we are unable to believe that a Higher Power, is not responsible for this whole process of evolution. I personally believe that there is some Guiding Force behind the whole evolutionary process and that this planet we live on is a living organism in itself, with we, the so called human race, being just mere cells of this organism called earth. Where you believe in God or some other higher power is not relevant. What is relevant in my simple mind, is that in the mind of a Celestial Guiding Force, a day can be in that Celestial Consciousnesss can be billions of years. Therefore, the creation of ****-sapiens, while in our minds occured 200,000, or 400,000, or 800,000 years, was nothing more than a mere micro second ago! Therfore, we have a long way to go!

I totally agree. All of the evidence gathered during a period of over 100 years points to **** sapiens evolving about 200,000 years ago (200 KYA). Our direct ancestor was probably **** Heidelbergergensis that evolved from **** Erectus at least by 700 KYA. **** Neanderthalensis evolved from **** Heidelbergergensis between 400-350 KYA. Based on this, it would appear the teeth are either from the two latter species of hominids. To prove otherwise, would take something like a DNA analysis.

Suez Canal or no Suez Canal, Israel is still on the Arabian plate and Africa is still on the African plate. Their borders are where the plates meet. Why do you think there is so many earthquakes over there?

Africa, not Africa - totally immaterial. what matters is that the "discovery" is most likely a politically morivated and quite elaborate fake.

I don't understand why anyone is worried about wasteland and connected plates. Nobody walked to Australia or Easter Island and deserts never stopped any branch of Humanity. If these guys really ate mammoths (and I think they did), then it's probably because they were out of dinosaur. Heat and dry land probably wasn't that intimidating, unless they were leaving it for better grounds.
Besides, the more modern scientists (reputable ones) are well aware that the "layer" dating system is a complete sham that hasn't ever been updated as "fossils" were found to be alive. This is why they published in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology (who still accept that dating system), and will probably enjoy a decade or so of publishing their findings and grant monies.
The findings are likely legitimate, and they are probably having a good laugh.

actually stolengiraffe, Isreal is not, nor has ever been a part of Africa. They rest on two entirely different plates. Always have, always will. Africa on the African plate, and Isreal on the Arabian plate. The two plates being in close proximity doesnt mean a thing. This is understood geological fact and does not perpetuate any propaganda of Africa being a barren wasteland. In fact, I have never heard or read of anything that accused Africa of being a barren wasteland, as nothing could be further from the truth. Where did you come up with that notion anyway?

Actually...Israel would be a part of Africa if it weren't for the man-made Suez Canal, but hey anything to keep the propaganda of Africa as a barren wasteland with no contribution to humanity going. Ideological hegemony at its worst.

Or, Africa would be a part of Asia.
