Obama Steps Out in Hawaii for Shave Ice Treat

KAILUA, Hawaii - President Barack Obama made the first public appearance of his vacation Monday, stopping by one of his favorite local shops for a Hawaiian snow cone known as "shave ice."

The president, dressed casually in a black polo shirt, khaki shorts and flip-flops, ordered a flavor combination of melon, lemon-lime and cherry at Island Snow, a store Obama has frequented during past trips to Hawaii. The president chatted with excited workers and asked them about their holidays as he placed about a dozen more orders for his family and friends.

The president stood outside under cloudy, threatening skies to enjoy his shave ice with daughters Malia and Sasha, and several of the family friends from Hawaii and Chicago who have joined Obama here.

Monday afternoon's outing was the first time the president has been spotted outside his rented oceanfront home or the nearby Marine base since he arrived here late Wednesday. After a frenzied legislative session that forced the president to delay the start of his trip, aides say rest and relaxation is at the top of Obama's agenda during his almost two-week vacation.

The president spent much of the cloudy, drizzly Hawaiian day indoors at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, bowling with his daughters and playing basketball with friends.

The base has become a sanctuary for the president on his Hawaiian vacations. The president golfs on the base course, the first couple uses its gym for morning workouts and the first family often visits a secluded beach here.

But Obamas haven't had much in the way of beach weather since the president arrived here. Clouds hung over the island of Oahu on Monday, and more rain is forecast throughout the week.

The Obamas are expected to stay in Hawaii through Jan. 2.

With a ridiculous $13.8 trillion national debt, the President needs to "shave" off a number of new federal programs that he has pushed for while the nation has been unable to afford the size and scope of government that we have. While he is at it, he should "shave" off a few of the do nothing and worthless departments and agencies that have been around for years. We have a Dept of Education, that educates no one (states run the schools). We have a Dept of Energy that creates no energy. We have countless federal programs which have been around for decades what automatically are expanded each year, whether the are worthwhile or not (because they are not evaluated each year to show whether they are worthwhile).

As I read the comments about a little fluff piece like this it just amazes me that some of you find it necessary to post insults and lies about the President. If you don't like him or his policies that's fine but is it really necessary to post stupid things like "the shaved ice is better qualified to be president" or "his children always look unhappy." And you ***** because he takes a vacation but never mention the vacations that Bush took. In 50 years of watching politics I have never seen a president treated so badly by the opposite party. It seems that the only goal the republicans have is to destroy this man. It would be nice to see them trying to solve some of our pressing problems like unemployment but they don't seem to care about that. Just destroy Obama and protect the ultra wealthy. But you haters keep it up....it will come back to bite you in the arse in 2012.

Don't let the facts get in the way of a good observation. I suppose you are fully aware of Bush's approximately 1,000 vacation days, his 77 trips on Air Force One to his ranch in Texas. His month-long retreats. Like I said, don't let the facts get in the way, considering Obama takes far less vacation time than your hero.
