Pope Blames Child Abuse Scandal on Society

Pope Benedict XVI told Vatican officials Monday that they must reflect on the church's culpability in its child sex-abuse scandal, but he also blamed a secular society in which he said the mistreatment of children was frighteningly common.

In his traditional, end-of-the-year speech to Vatican cardinals and bishops, Benedict said revelations of abuse in 2010 reached "an unimaginable dimension" that required the church to accept the "humiliation" as a call for renewal.

"We must ask ourselves what was wrong in our proclamation, in our whole way of living the Christian life, to allow such a thing to happen," the pope said.

Benedict also said, however, that the scandal must be seen in a broader social context, in which child pornography is seemingly considered normal by society and drug use and sexual tourism are on the rise.

"The psychological destruction of children, in which human persons are reduced to articles of merchandise, is a terrifying sign of the times," Benedict said.

He said that as recently as the 1970s, pedophilia wasn't considered an absolute evil but rather part of a spectrum of behaviors that people refused to judge in the name of tolerance and relativism.

As an avalanche of cases of pedophile priests came to light, church officials frequently defended their previous practice of putting abusers in therapy, not jail, by saying that was the norm in society at the time. Only this year did the Vatican post on its website unofficial guidelines for bishops to report pedophile priests to police if local laws require it.

"In the 1970s, pedophilia was theorized as something fully in conformity with man and even with children," the pope said. "It was maintained - even within the realm of Catholic theology - that there is no such thing as evil in itself or good in itself. There is only a 'better than' and a 'worse than.' Nothing is good or bad in itself."

"The effects of such theories are evident today," he said.

The traditional Christmas speech to Vatican cardinals and bishops is an eagerly anticipated address that Benedict uses to focus the church hierarchy on key issues.

Benedict has previously acknowledged that the scandal was the result of sin that the church must repent for, and make amends with victims. He repeated Monday that the church must do a better job of screening out abusers and helping victims heal.

"It is fundamentally disturbing to watch a brilliant man so conveniently misdiagnose a horrific scandal," said Barbara Blaine, president of the main U.S. victims' group Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.

She said the scandal wasn't caused by the 1970s but rather by the church's culture of secrecy and fixation with self-preservation in which predator priests and the bishops who moved them around rather than turn them in were rarely disciplined.

"Whenever the pope tires of talking about abuse and starts acting on abuse, he should focus on taking immediate, pratical steps to oust those who commit, ignore and conceal clergy sex crimes first," Blaine said.

The sex abuse scandal, which first exploded in the U.S. in 2002, erupted on a global scale this year with revelations of thousands of victims in Europe and beyond, of bishops who covered up for pedophile priests and of Vatican officials who turned a blind eye to the crimes for decades.

Questions were raised about how Benedict himself handled cases both as archbishop in Munich and as head of the Vatican office that handled abuse cases.

Recently, the Vatican released documentation showing that as early as 1988 then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger sought to find quicker ways to permanently remove priests who raped and molested children in a bid to get around church law that made it difficult to defrock priests against their will.

While Ratzinger was unsuccessful then, Vatican rules now allow for fast-track defrocking. But victims advocates say the Vatican still has a long way to go in terms of requiring bishops to report sex crimes to police and release information and documentation about known pedophiles.

Only in the Catholic Church would pedophilia be considered the norm, or "part of a spectrum of behaviors that people refused to judge in the name of tolerance and relativism." Actually, not just in the Catholic Church, probably any repressive religion. I'm sure the radically fundamentalist muslims have the same problem, I'm sure radically fundamentalist "Christians" have it throughout their ranks. Any repressive religion is merely a smokescreen for the behaviors they allege to abhor. Among deeply religious people, who would force their religion on others, this would be excused. Normal, intelligent people would rightly despise this behavior.

Sorry Pope, you are the one who is misguided ,we placed our faith and trust in you and the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church annoited pedophiles as priests and who committed horrific acts of perverted sex upon our children and you , your predessors and your underlings protected them for decades , if not centuries.

Now you think Society is to blame??

Its not exactly that bundush - How could they know in most cases about the priests being Pedos.

The real crime is how they covered it up, under orders from the top.

How many "not guilty your honor" preople have been sent to the slammer.

Sorry IL PAPA. My hemhroids are all the judge needs to see.

This sorry critter who was drafted into the german army learned his lessons well. HIs boss in the army had a minister of Propaganda, another catholic named Goebbels.

Who coined the phrase - IF YOU TELL A LIE OFTEN ENOUGH AND OUTRAGEOUS ENOUGH IT WILL BE SEEN AS THE TRUTH

The only question is whether Gobbels learned from his catholic faith, or the catholic hierarchy learned from Goebbels.

somehow the pope reminds me of some other extremist relbious groups.

You only need to listen to them for a min - and you can see the pride and arrogance in their face. While they try to suck up more money.

The pope is wrong when he says that the child molestation scandal in the RCC "must be seen in a broader social context". People instinctively know that child molestation is morally wrong and should be stopped when encountered. That was just as true 100 years ago as it is now.

Of course! Amen!- The horrific thing is how FREQUENTLY and LONG priest caught in pedofilia were not REPORTED TO THE AUTHORITIES and often NOT EVEN MADE TO STEP OUT OF PARISH MINISTRY! - but trnasferred where they continued to perpetrate their crimes on those placing their trust in them.

The real problem is the church covered it up, instead of dragging the guilty ones to the police in chains

Also it claimed confessional priveledges. So in effect murderers could go to the church, cleanse their soul, and go back to doing their dirty business.

Virtually every state has laws requiring certain people, including religious leaders to report known molesters.

The church's holier then thou attitude is best described by another word from its home base = OMERTA

"If you have a few hundred followers, and you let some of them molest children, they call you a cult leader. If have a billion, they call you ''Pope.'' It's like, if you can't pay your mortgage, you're a deadbeat. But if you can't pay a million mortgages, you're BearStearns and we bail you out. And that is who the Catholic Church is: the BearStearns of organized pedophilia -- too big, too fat.

When the current pope was in his previous Vatican job as John Paul's D*ck Cheney, he wrote a letter instructing every Catholic bishop to keep the s.ex abuse of minors secret until the Statute of Limitations ran out. And that's the Church's attitude: ''We're here, we're queer, get used to it,'' which is fine, far be it from me to criticize religion. But just remember one thing: if the Pope was -- instead of a religious figure -- merely the CEO of a nationwide chain of day care centers, where thousands of employees had been caught molesting kids and then covering it up, he''d be arrested faster than you can say ''who wants to touch Mr. Wiggle?''" typically less then 1% of the people are molesters. In the church it seems to be about 5% of the priests. And SMAP -- the survivors of abuse group estimates its more then 10%

But a major part of the problem is that in about 1200, a pope gregory ended marriage for priests. And made them marry the church and get a wedding ring. Of course so the church would inherit the priests property.

Whats that old bible saying about money is the root of all evil.

Years ago when Catholics were uneducated, they wore blinders while trusting their clergy to spoon-feed religion to them. The Catholic bible was in Latin, the mass was in Latin, everyone just trusted the priests to deliver the blessing. They buried their self in the rosary and repetitious prayer while not paying much attention to the rehearsed words that came out of their own mouths. Well there is no excuse now. Too much more is known. Priests are not holier than thou or anyone else. Many enter the priesthood for reasons other than their love of GOD. With the protection of the church a molester can get away with his dirty deed for years before the church allows the news to leak out. Legal authorities are rarely informed. They get away with it for years causing damage to many lives before anyone ever hears about it. Not all cases are reported. Only a fraction of the cases are reported, and an even smaller number is taken seriously. How many times we have heard of priests molesting children, yet, very many less are ever arrested and convicted? The pope might respect his religion however he needs to come to the conclusion that not every priest feels the same about Catholicism.

And the pope is trying to undo vatican II so I read. Its back to the old days of "Regeneration" The church's program for converting Jew - on pain of death.

Remember the story about the pogroms in Europe - murderous riots against the Jews. Since the Popes previous job was running the CDF, the successor to the INquisition, maybe he'll call up his pals who he grew up with in the 30'w and 40s in gErmany to to the deed.

My very catholic friend who struggles to go to church said when RATZI was selected Pope - she cried, and not tears of Joy.

When anyone molests a child, it is not the fault of society, it is not the fault of the child, it is the fault of the molester. There is no gray area here. For the Pope or anyone else to attempt to deflect responsibility on anyone except for the guilty is an abomination to GOD himself.

If God existed, I don't think he'd allow child rape to be performed tens of thousands of times by his representatives.

Supposedly "all powerful", right?

But doesn't lift a finger to stop such evil.

Give me a break.
