FDA: Some Supplement Makers Spiking Products

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning manufacturers to stop spiking their products with steroids, prescription drugs or other prohibited substances.

FDA Cracks Down On Illegal Supplements

On "The Early Show", CBS News Medical Correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton said this is a widespread and dangerous issue.

Ashton explained, "(The problem) when you are talking about dietary supplements, even if they are 'natural products,' is that the FDA does not have to police their safety before they come to market. They are only responsible for ascertaining their safety after they are on the shelf."

The FDA, Ashton said, is concerned about three popular categories of supplements that are available both on the Internet, and in some cases in retail stores, for weight loss, sexual enhancement and bodybuilding.

In the realm of weight loss, Ashton said there's concern over a substance called sibutramine that is in the drug Meridia, which was recently pulled from the market.

She said, "The concern is not only liver problems, but stroke and potentially heart problems and heart attacks. Talking about weight loss, 'natural' does not always mean safe."

With bodybuilding products, Ashton said, "They sometimes promote on the packaging it is a legal alternative to anabolic steroids, which we know have very dangerous side effects, liver problems and can really have serious hormonal consequences."

She added, "The other issue talking about anabolic steroids, sometimes the package will give a warning saying you may test positive on drug testing. You have to realize that if it works to build muscle and can give you a positive drug test there, that there are substances in there that can work as anabolic steroids do, which is potentially very dangerous."

Sexual enhancement drugs can also have issues with illegal and dangerous substances, Ashton said.

"The FDA is issuing a warning for people to stop taking categories of these supplements because the concern here is they contain a drug very similar to the prescription medication in Viagra, which can affect blood pressure," she said.

Ashton said the four items the FDA warns people not take are Vigor-25, Duro Extend Capsules for Men, Magic Power Coffee and Man Up Now.

She said, "They're available on the internet and in stores. If people are taking them, they should stop immediately."

Ashton advised talking with your doctor about any products you are taking, even if they claim to be "natural."

"There are very good books -- you can get one called the PDR (for Herbal Medicines)," she said. "You can actually read and research these products. You cannot assume things are natural or safe. We have to remember cocaine comes from a natural plant, and that's obviously not safe."

Some supplements and vitamins may be unsafe or poor quality, but the vast majority are safe and good quality; rarely do they have any significant side effects. Now, compare that with the "designer" drugs that come out of the billion dollar pharma industry. Almost all of these drugs have side effects from mild to severe and even death! I'm referring to drugs NOW on the market. These drugs have been linked to cancers and destruction of internal organs. I don't know about you, but if I had to pick between supplements and drugs, it would be a "no brainer" for me.

Just because something is labeled "health care supplement" or vitamins doesn't mean it's safe or can't have damaging side effects. Physicians seem to be pushing this market more than ever, so one has to be vigilant about doing thorough research on the supplement in question.

I have always stayed away from supplements, "natural" or not. I would most certainly avoid drug-laced ones.
In the last month I have, however, been taking Lutein supplements but only because an ophthalmologist recommended them. In addition reputable medical websites endorse them.

While I don't know the specific ingredients of all of the products, Several that the FDA frowns on are generally safer than their prescription counterparts. It is usually a matter of people being too lazy to research the products. On the other hand the FDA has extensive resources yet condones very unsafe products as long as their bedmates in the pharma industry are making a buck.
The FDA has no credibility so even if they tell the truth about something, no one can take them seriously.

The supplement industry as a whole is probably much safer than the prescription drug racket that is essentially unregulated by the FDA.

I read that pharma drugs have contaminants so why isn't this mentioned? Answer: FDA is in bed with the pharma industry. I understand this article is about supplements, but I think it's important enough that this should have been included. The FDA rarely steps up against big pharma. I think they're actually afraid to challenge them. There have been many cases, even currently, where a drug is actually dangerous and not even worth the risk versus benefits, like for example, Gardasil. Gardasil only protects against 2 of the 18 or so viruses. Gardasil has been responsible for about 30 deaths. Do a web search. The FDA ignores these facts and allows this dangerous drug to remain on the market.
