Prince Charles, Camilla Attacked by Protesters

Updated at 7:28 p.m. ET

Furious student protesters attacked a car carrying Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, vandalized buildings and battled riot police Thursday as a controversial hike in university fees triggered Britain's worst political violence in years.

In a major security breach, demonstrators set upon the heir to the throne's Rolls Royce as it drove through London's busy West End on its way to a theater. A group of up to 20 struck it with fists, sticks and bottles, breaking a window and splattering the gleaming black vehicle with paint.

In the frenzy, some chanted "off with their heads!"

Britons pay very high taxes, and one of the things they have received in return is a free - or almost free - college education, CBS News Correspondent Elizabeth Palmer reports.

Not any more. The students protesting Thursday will graduate with very large debts, Palmer reports.

Police, Students Clash over UK Tuition Hike

By nightfall, police corralled the students in the center of London, in Parliament Square, where some of the more violent ones started to attack government buildings, Palmer reports.

Adnan Nazir, a 23-year-old podiatrist who was following the protesters, said Charles, 62, kept his calm, gently pushing his 63-year-old wife toward the floor to get her out of the line of fire.

"Charles got her on the floor and put his hands on her," Nazir said. "Charles was still waving and giving the thumb's up.

"It was just a surreal thing," he said. "It was completely manic."

Charles' office, Clarence House, said the royal couple was unharmed. But the attack took police completely by surprise and raises serious security questions.

The chief of the Metropolitan Police, Paul Stephenson, said the force would launch an investigation into Thursday's violence.

Prime Minister David Cameron said the violence against the royal couple was "shocking and regrettable."

"It is clear that a minority of protesters came determined to provoke violence, attack the police and cause as much damage to property as possible," Cameron said. "They must face the full force of the law."

Police said it was unclear whether the royals had been deliberately targeted, or were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The couple arrived looking somber but composed at the London Palladium theater, where they were attending a Royal Variety Performance.

Camilla later managed to shrug off the ordeal, saying there was "a first time for everything," the Press Association news agency reported.

Thousands of students staged a peaceful protest but a minority turned violent, hurling sticks and rocks at riot police, smashing store windows and setting on fire a giant Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square.

Earlier, small groups of protesters near London's Parliament Square threw flares, billiard balls and paint bombs, and officers, some on horses, rushed to reinforce the security cordon. Police said 13 protesters and four officers were injured in the fracas, while seven people were arrested.

Thousands of other students held demonstrations and sit-ins throughout the country, heaping pressure on the government to reverse course. Students marching through central London banged drums, waved placards and chanted "education is not for sale," as weeks of nationwide protests reached a crescendo.

I would like to know how much the taxpayers have to foot each month to keep the royalty in their castles and the servants that keep up these homes. If the Queen would sell a couple of the jewels she owns she could give the money to the people for education.
When the Queen is having her breakfast that is served to her every morning I wonder if she ever feels guilty for living in such lavish surroundings and the people below her cannot pay their bills or get an education. SO sad.
I must say though I loved Dianna, such a kind soul. Look what they did to her, used her up and threw her away. That ought to tell you something about these people. Entitlement.

Gee, individuals who've never worked a day in their lives pummeled by working class individuals just because the life-long opulance they enjoy is at the tax-payers expense?

Having lived in Sw1 for some time the drive from Clarence House to the palladium is less than 2 minutes down the Mall and across trafalgar square. The crowd would have been filing up Whitehall having been kettled and charged by mounted police with the news the vote had passed They first thing they would have seen and heard was the sirens and police outriders and a black car. In that area chances are you' d think it was a government minister. (Although they'd be in a Range Rover not a beautiful old Daimler)
That said the student protest was hijacked by anarchist groups and london street gangs bent on using an legally organised protest to go on a rampage of destruction in through westminster.
Some people commenting have no idea about how the British view or relate to their Royal family ( usually bored indifference or apathetic complaint) judging from their remarks.

Here is a WikiLeak for you the old Queen had Diana killed and Prince Charles knew it all along. With the taxes over there rising out of reach I would say the students have a right to a protest. Wait until it happens here in the U.S. with government control.

The old Queen had Diana killed,
this was 20thC Europe not Grimm's fairy tales. Besides your looking at the wrong royal wrong orders for the wrong reason. Dear old Mr Burrell knows (not that outlandish guff he sells to the gullible) and he extracted an apology in court from the Queen herself on the strength of it.

I don't understand why raising the tuition cost at Universities in England will help get the country out of economic trouble? It will only benefit the colleges, so what's the point? It's like saying the college kids have enough money to afford the triple cost of tuition, when they are usually the poorest population. I know when I went to college I was poor, and had to live at home with my parents. This doesn't make any sense to me, and no wonder the college crowds are protesting.

Education and money equal power. Those with money are satisfied with their power and have no desire to put their power at risk by paying into society for purposes of educating others. The rich only want one thing and that is to protect their wealth and power. Old money is oft wiser but there is much new money in the world and it is repeating the mistakes of history by climbing the ladder of success and kicking the ladder off the roof top for those who follow. This juvenile approach to wealth leads to revolt.

Honestly gridlock.... If you think the Repubs are any better at handling money than the libs you are delusional.

They like to spend just as much money just on different things. Instead of Social Security, healthcare and welfare the cons buy guns bombs, bullets and many nice gifts for Israel.
