Microsoft Sells 2.5M Kinect Sensors for Xbox 360

Microsoft Corp. said Monday that it has sold more than 2.5 million of its Kinect sensors, which let users forgo traditional video game controllers and instead use their bodies to control onscreen characters. The product has been on sale for 25 days.

Kinect, which works exclusively with Microsoft's Xbox 360 video game console, is a $150 accessory that uses a camera to capture players' movements. It has been hotly anticipated since it was announced in June to positive early reviews. When it went on sale earlier this month, Best Buy Co. Inc., for one, opened stores at midnight to sell it.

Kinect proved to be a hot holiday item during the Thanksgiving weekend shopping blitz, in particular. Nik Nayar, Target's vice president of merchandising, described it as a "top performer."

Shares of Microsoft closed Monday at $25.31, up 6 cents.
