With Company Facing Job Cut, Woman Fires Herself

When the owner at Accurate Background Check in Ocala, Fla., realized the grim reality that to save her company she had to trim her staff, she made an unlikely choice: herself.

Lola Gonzalez said she couldn't bring herself to fire any of her hard-working employees, so she walked away from her own six-figure job.

In an "Early Show on Saturday Morning" exclusive, Gonzalez shared her story from Tampa, Fla.

So what made her decide to do this?

She told "Early Show" co-anchor Chris Wragge, simply, it was the right thing to do.

Gonzalez explained, "My husband told me I should cut an employee back. And it angered me. And I decided that I was going to call my confidant, my good friend, my attorney ... and told him what I wanted to do, and he gave me his blessings and told me go for it."

So what did the staff think of her choice? Wragge remarked, "They must have been slack-jawed."

Gonzalez replied, "Yes, they thought that I was kidding because I do like to play pranks.

"But I told them that I was serious, and that I trusted them - I hired them. We provide wise hiring decisions, I mean, information for employers to make the wise hiring decisions. As I hired them, I was confident I was doing the right thing.

"They thought I was crazy," she said.

Wragge said, "When you told them were you leaving and were going to sacrifice your own job, did they look around the room, (and say), 'OK, if she's leaving, who's running this place?'"

Gonzalez answered, "Yes, they asked me that and I said, 'You are. You are, and I trust you.' They've taken ownership, and I do not regret what I've done, for a minute."

But things have turned out all right for Gonzalez because, she said, she got creative and started talking with people about her job search.

She told Wragge, "(My current job) was a blessing. And it was not planned. It so happened I crossed the street and ran into somebody, our sheriff, and told him I was looking for a job, and the next thing I knew I got a referral, and it was a job made for me."

She was hired for Devereux in Florida at half the salary, but now has the flexibility to help her former company and not burden it by taking a salary and health benefits.

But would Gonzalez go back to her former company if things turn around?

She said, "As a facilitator, my job is to put myself in these communities, bring in the resources and leave in about two years. And then the community center should be able to run by its own. We don't have public transportation, so there's a lot of things I'm working on. But my job is to put myself out of business."

She should have just kept her job and cut her 6 figure salary by the amount she was paying the person she was going to let go. Duh!

It is very admirable of this woman to leave her job to save her employees but she obviously could afford to do so. Most wouldn't be able to afford it and certainly if they could afford to they wouldn't. We live in a society that screams "me, me, me, I, I , I" I would kill to have a supervisor who thought of his employees for a change. My supervisor spends more time trying to figure out ways of getting rid of people than to keep them. He enjoys intimidating his employees and badgering them on a daily basis. People say because they can not afford to find another job in a jobless country.

At first glance this seems and is impressive. On the flip side, why should she have to make this decision? This decision to downsize your company to stay alive is what all small businesses are faced with in light of the democrats wanting to punish those that make $250K or more. Her intentions are admirable, but this is not the way to promote capitalism which is how jobs are created. I hope she takes into consideration that her employees no matter how loyal they are are not true emtreprenuers as she and will never be able to fully grasp how to take a company that started from nothing and make it continue to prosper. The other consideration I hope she made is that most people that get something for free don't appreciate it and will usually squander it. I would like to read about this story again in a year to see what happens to this company.

Now, if only the political leaders and representaives who keep telling unemployed Americans to "wait until the economy gets better" and trimming to the bone on their own employees, would fire themselves!

I think that this is a great story. But it doesn't speak about the countless other small business owners that forgo personal gain, so that their businesses can thrive and their employees continue to prosper during difficult times. I was self employed and owned 2 companies. I have numerous friends that are or were self employed. And even though we didn't terminate ourselves from our own companies, we do typically stop paying ourselves and taking proceeds from our companies during difficult financial times, to ensure that our staff and businesses can continue to thrive. Perhaps a story about the trials and tribulations of small business owners could accompany this story.

It is amazing to see this when, over the years , I have become very pessimistic about any higher-ups in a job environment. I've had bosses who fired others so that they could bring in their nephew/son/wife/daughter, etc. The newbie couldn't do the job but, hey, they're family. Why have good workers when you can have your idiot wife doing nothing all day? So this is truly an amazing thing.

From just hearing the way that your speaking about a person I really want to know what company you own so that I dont ever use your services. I wonder if you talk like that around or to your mother. You are such a heartless person with such a dirty mouth. You are trully ignorant. Thats why your bisness is going to fail........you dont even know how to treat others. I think you just a loney person with nothing else to do.....maybe if you put this much effort like you did in this posting you might just bring some type of proft into your own business. Your just upset because no one thinks your important; dont hate because you couldn't get your 15 mins of fame.

THis is so much claptrap. I own a business and I don't take a salary. I didn't "fire" myself, I just don't take a salary.

This ***** is a self-absorbed ****. "Look at me! Look at me! I'm so self-less!"

CBS is a **** as well.

That's also an option...should the person be well off enough to not need income. But obviously this woman isn't going to the vault to chip off gold whenever she needs money so she must find another job and another source of income. Like the story said, she will be able to continue to help the company as well as make a salary to help her family. The only people seeking 15 minutes of fame are you two morons. Go back. Read the story with some comprehension skills this time. And I love the hatred toward some random woman you never met or even reasonably know. I'd hate to think what you would do to her if the story was about her firing some people to keep her job and company going.
