Meet Karen Jacobsen, the "Guiding Voice" of GPS

Karen Jacobsen is the person behind the soothing voice that gives you directions when you get in your car and use your GPS; and sometimes she can drive you nuts when those directions go haywire.

To millions of GPS users, she is known as "Australian Karen."

But as CBS News correspondent Michelle Miller reports, Jacobsen is now hoping to be not only be heard but seen, as she launches a music career.

While she has anonymously been speaking to people for years, she now hopes to put a face to her famous voice.

Jacobsen was chosen by GPS maker Garmin ten years ago for her calming accent, guiding drivers around the world.

On a ride through midtown Manhattan, Miller told Jacobsen she hates it when she tells her she is "Recalculating."

Asked why, Miller joked, "'Cause you sound condescending!"

"It's not meant to be condescending!" Jacobsen explained. "It's meant to be reassuring and will get you back on track!"

"Right now, up to 25 million people are listening to me give them directions around the world," Jacobsen said.

"They actually have the ability to go on to the device and pick Karen. How does that make you feel?" Miller asked.

"Awesome I feel very popular! I always wanted to be popular!" Jacobsen joked.

Those 25 million fans may not know her by face but her voice is instantly recognizable. Karen is now trying to "relocate" from your GPS to your car radio by launching a music career.

Some fans have navigated their way to her music online, but she's still waiting for that big hit. No matter what, her voice will still be the one most use to find their way home.

The reason why googling "The GPS Girl" results in Karen Jacobsen is because she CALLS herself "The GPS Girl." She extensively promotes herself as THE gps girl (although she seems a bit long in the tooth to be referring to herself as a girl), so the google hits are a result of her own misleading PR campaign.

HipHat, I guess I'm just a little tired of our "fame at all costs" culture. I've just looked at her website, etc, and Karen Jacobsen just seems so desperate, not to share her music, but to be FAMOUS. Famous for whatever in the world she can find. It's like people who go on Fear Factor and those reality shows - why the desperate need for fame? What is wrong with these people?

Google ?the gps girl? and the first 7 hits are all about Karen Jacobsen. Obviously there are many other people behind the various GPS voices. I?ve never heard mention of them in the media but they could all put their hand up if they so chose. Google Karen Jacobsen and you find her website, where you find out she has had a singing career for years....and a great voice!

If you had a talent such as singing and an opportunity to promote it wouldn't you go for it?

This is the second time this week I've had to read about this woman and I'm not happy. "THE voice"?

I have personally worked with the ACTUAL most popular American and British female GPS voices and this is not either of them. Did no-one do the math? Hold ya dingos mate, she has an Ausie accent, only 20 million people in Australia, lucky if there's 4 million GPS units, even if half choose this voice....

The expression in the second photo says it all- "I wonder if I'm getting away with this?" An annoying PR pitch, but oh well, nuh wurries mate! ;)

Just a detail - she is said to have "25 million fans." Actually, there are 25 million of these devices worldwide, so when this woman says "up to 25 million people" are listening to her, it just means that she is one of several choices on 25 million gps devices. She is acting like she is THE ONLY gps voice out - she's THE GPS GIRL - and this shows quite a bit of disrespect to the other voice artists who have leant their voices to the gps companies. It smacks of shameless self-promotion, but heck, I guess everyone is entitled to their own 15 minutes of fame.
