Yemen: The Next Front Line Against al Qaeda

Yemen has slowly but surely become another front line in the battle with Islamic militancy.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (or AQAP), based in Yemen, is described by security officials as currently the most active terrorist franchise. U.S.-born al Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki, among others, is based there as well.

In other words, says CBS News correspondent Mark Phillips, AQAP has become AQ HQ.

Yemen Eyed as Source of Suspicious Packages

The capital of Yemen, the exotic city of Sana'a, is about as far as the central government's authority stretches. The country's beleaguered president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, is fighting three internal wars with religious and regional-based militants, and vast areas of the hinterland have become prime al Qaeda training ground - exactly the way Afghanistan was before 9/11.

As the military pressure has curtailed al Qaeda's ability to train along the Afghan-Pakistan border region (where the leadership is thought to be hiding), militants have shifted to the more welcoming sands of Yemen - and, to some extent, Somalia, just across the Gulf of Aden.

It's also closer to traditional funding sources from sympathizers elsewhere in the Arabian Peninsula.

"It's a sanctuary for organizations like al Qaeda," international security expert Bob Ayers told Phillips. "They can train there, they can base themselves there, they can plan there, they can do their logistics efforts to equip themselves there, and then they can move from there to whatever they want to operate."

They have done so before. The Detroit Christmas underwear bomb plot was hatched in Yemen. Jihadi websites are full of bomb ideas, from picture frames to cassette players. And, of course, Yemen is where the USS Cole was attacked ten years ago.

There is increasing cooperation between the U.S. and Yemeni authorities, but the commitment (particularly in financial terms) is only a small fraction of the money being poured into Pakistan, for example. The Yemen government is also dependent, to some extent, on the support of the same tribes harboring militants.

CBS News national security analyst Juan Zarate says Yemen has deep roots and ties with the extremist Islamic movement.

"It's a place where Islamist extremists have ties with the tribal society, and it's the ancestral home of Osama bin Laden's family," Zarate said on "The Early Show on Saturday Morning." In addition, Zarate said, it's a difficult territory (mountainous in some parts, desert in other) for the government to affect full control. "So in some ways it's an ideal setting for al Qaeda to have a presence."

Although the al Qaeda leadership is still believed to reside in western Pakistan near the Afghan border, "clearly the al Qaeda presence in Yemen has grown more and more serious," Zarate said. "

"They've got fighters numbering up to 600, they're attracting Western recruits, they're training them, trying to deploy them. This is becoming a staging ground for al Qaeda to launch global attacks, and so it has to be an area of focus for the U.S. government."

Zarate also said he believed AQAP is sophisticated enough to launch attacks against American interests. "I think the problem here is that the affiliate in Yemen is made up of seasoned, hardened al Qaeda operatives, the leader Naser al-Wuhayshi, is a long-time bin Laden ally, trained by al Qaeda. The fighters that they have, along with the expertise, is real.

"And so the attempts that you see to probe our defenses, I think, are very real attempts by AQAP to find our vulnerabilities and to actually attack us. I think we've got to be quite conscious of that and defend against it."

Let's say for a moment that the "bombs" were real. Let's further imagine they exploded in YOUR hometoen and killed, say... 52 men women and children. What would be YOUR reaction?
.
Would you want revenge?
.
Would you want to strike back at the terrorists who killed 52 of your family, friends and neighbors? Yes? No?
.
On December 18, 2009 - American cruise missiles saturated a Yemeni village with cluster bomblets... killing 52 men, women and children. No wonder they do what they do.

To save our government millions in futile consultants fees, here is free advice on the next fronts for future Al-Qaeda terrorists: draw a line from Malaysia, Indonesia through Yemen, Saudi-Arabia, Jordan to Egypt to Tunisia, Morocco, to Algeria and to West African Muslim communities. Bypass where the Shia Muslims are dominant namely: Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, Azerbaijan, Lebanon, Syria and ignore Libya, Dubai, Turkey and Oman too. Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan could be fronts too had it not been for being shielded by Russia and Iran.

coucou,

Cleric Anwar al-Awlaki is on the US hit list. This man is a naturalized citizen of the US. This man is also a TRAITOR.! Now the ACLU and the father of this man are attempting to sue the government for putting out a contract on this man because he is a US citizen, I think the ACLU has lost their collective minds. If this man was a natural born citizen and commited treason, the US would want him executed as well. The more I hear about this war, the worse it gets. Our self-sacrificing and brave military are dying every day so that the "politically correct" ; exscuse me; "spineless " officials in Washington can continue to operate under this monkeycrap agenda. This country needs a leadership that is willing to do what has to be done once and for all. Terrorists are infiltrating every country in the world. It needs to stop, it needs to stop NOW.!!

I think you have lost the ability to function properly in our Republic. You drank too deeply from the fear cup. If you can't see the problem with extra judicial executions of US citizens far from any battlefield ordered, emperor like, by our president? Then you are a part of what ails our nation. More's the pity. Shame on you... If you want a murderous empire so bad, move to one.

Another fatal remark regarding sanctity of being born in the USA. Let's not forget Charles Manson and Gary Gilmore were also US citizens. What sets them apart from American Muslim terrorists? Nothing! They are different kinds of psycopath murderers to different ends. We give Muslim terrorists a break on account of their religious conviction and that is wrong. Snakes and lizards are also born on this land and that does not give them the sanctity of being anything special.

When and until the US wakes up to the fact that "war" is war, this is just going to continue to escalate. In World War One and World War Two, all the countries involved did what they had to do to win. We seem to be trying to fight a "civilized" war. Sorry folks, there is no such thing. War is war and should be fought that way. In the World Wars and in Vietnam, there were thousands of civilian casualties. In Iraq, the warring religious facions don't care who or how many innocents are killed, They blow up one another on a daily basis. This is what we are going to have to deal with if the US does not wage all out war on these terrorists. It's sad; but true; a war waged this way is going to have civilian casualties, but this is the ONLY way to put a stop to this, here and now.!!

To some extent in Somalia.?!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? Almost all of the southern half of Somalia has been overtaken by terrorists. The are the most cruel, vicious terrorists there are. If the American government recognizes this as "to some extent", the US is in really big trouble.

Well here we go again, the US falls for the terrorists ploy, Once again our government leaders will dig into the US citizens wallet to throw the country ever closer to complete financial collapse. Al Qaeda doesn't have to do much of anything except sit back and laugh while our country is destroyed from within. Our leaders need to wake up and stop this insanity. That is how we helped Afghanistan beat the Russians. They would not stop until it broke their countries financial back. The United States single biggest threat is our own ego and those who stand to profit from war and anti terrorism. The rate at which we are spending our money on the war machine. The country will be financially destroyed within a couple more years. Shame on our leaders for being such fools.
