Gay Councilman: My Plea Has Saved Lives Already

An openly gay Fort Worth, Texas city councilman says a dramatic speech he gave this week -- a video of which has gone viral and been viewed more than a half-million times on YouTube - has kept some gay teens who are being bullied from committing suicide.

In it, an emotional Joel Burns assures them life gets better beyond high school.

He used a routine council meeting to address young gay victims of bullying, reports "Early Show on Saturday Morning" co-anchor Chris Wragge.

"I have never told this story to anyone before tonight," Burns began.

In a heart-wrenching moment, Burns told of the bullying he endured as a teenager. "They said that I was a faggot and that I should die," Burns said.

The harassment drove him to the verge of suicide, Wragge points out.

"Coming out was painful, but life got so much better for me," Burns continued.

His message, aimed at gay teens across the country, was simple. "You will get out of that high school and you'll never have to deal with those jerks again if you don't want to," Burns said. "You will find and you will make new friends who will understand you. And life will get so, so, so much better.

"You will have a lifetime of happy memories if you just allow yourself and give yourself the time to make them."

When Burns finished, he got a standing ovation from his fellow council members.

Suicide by gay high school and college students is an all-too-familiar tragedy, Wragge notes. There have been at least a dozen such deaths nationwide since the beginning of September.

On "The Early Show on Saturday Morning", Burns told Wragge he "had just been so heartbroken by all the suicides we saw through September. Then Monday ... I read about the story of a young man named Zack in Oklahoma, who attended a Norman, Okla. City Council meeting at which some anti-gay rhetoric was bandied about, after which he took his life.

"And I thought, 'You know, if this kid in Oklahoma commits suicide after going to a City Council meeting, I certainly am warranted to utilize my time at my City Council meeting in Texas to talk about this issue.' I literally wrote it out during lunch, and it was very raw and very fresh. And I think if I had given myself some time to kind of self-edit, I might not have had such an emotional speech or talk, but I think that that was part of the poignancy of it."

Burns says some of the reaction has been surprising, such as that of an older council member "in his late 70s, very, very conservative. He and I don't always see eye-to-eye on certain things. And, at the end of my talk, he was crying and he hugged me, and that was a nice feeling."

Burns adds the rapid spread of the video online has surprised him "very much so. … The goal for me was two-fold," he explained. "One, to tell kids in Fort Worth or wherever they were watching, to give them hope in a dark time, that things will get better, but they just have though hang out and stay put long enough to make that happen. And also a message for the adults to remind them we have a role and responsibility, as adults, to make sure the school place and otherwise bullying our teens are facing is addressed. And so, that was the goal. It's been an amazing couple of days since."

"I have talked for a number of teens on the phone," Burns continued. "I gave out my phone number during that speech, and I've gotten something like 800 phone calls since. I've had to enlist an army of friends and family to help volunteer to make sure the calls get answered and, obviously, I've got other roles to do besides in this week. But, this has been kind of all-consuming.

But the most poignant one, I think, was a young teenager in Australia. And a friend of his e-mailed me and she and I have had a conversation back-and-forth about how he was -- she knew he was in a dark place, in a bad place. She asked him to watch it and he said, 'I was planning this weekend to kill myself.' And I've had a number of kids like that I've talked to."

Time to grow up people. Kids should have examples of love not hate. If you don't like something avoid it. Why do some people have to out do another group just so they can show they deserve more respect if something is found out about them? We all have our strengths/abilities and we all have our areas of weakness or areas of improvement needed. You may not like gay people, but the reality is to determine who is homosexual/heterosexual you'd end up causing the human race an extinction. Its time we got along and ended this nonsense out of hate. Love thy neighbor as you love thy self.

This is a gay man working in a school, you are so right, I see allot of this is the schools and it depends on who the kid is and who's doing the bulling if something is done. As a school worker if something negative happens we are told to keep are mouth shut are we could be fired . I sure this happens at allot of schools. more so now that school of choice is out there .If I had a child I would home school or send my child to a school that doesn't have all the bells and whistles they be safer and get a better learning . kids are labeled from the day they start I worked there long enough to see them go from young to young adults and yes some had a very hard why to go when they did nothing wrong. This starts if a teacher doesn't like them or a poplar parent or student doesn't like there family or they live in a trailer park as one teacher told me. Those kids are from the trailer park. these are good kids that are doomed from the start. Say if you are a poplar parent ,have money,or kids are good in sports if given the chance to play they are left alone. It is so hard to work in a government funded school where the government doesn't have a clue how these kids are treated. It Is so sad it takes a shooting or a suicide of a young person . to get people thinking about this. This comment could cost me my job but I could live with myself if I didn't say any thing, set terms for your school board is a huge start give people of all walks of life a chance to serve
are school board have people with 20 plus years in . freshen it up a little . this my help allot in detecting bulling issues have and open door policy to your school board We as employee's are told we will be fired if we talk to the school board about school issues . I was bullied all through school yes it gets better when you get out unless you go to work at a school and the game hasn't changed. The player have grown up.
I pray for these kids and give the strength.

I have to say that I am not gay and really can't say that I even know too many gay people. I have nothing against it or anything but have honestly never thought too much into the bullying or any of the factors. However I am now a mother of a beautiful 2yr old girl and I could not imagine being the parents of one of these kids. Most of the people on that have something negative to say about the subject just want to talk crap about these kids "sexuality" and are not looking at the bigger picture. It was the life that was ripped out of these kids not their sexuality. When you are a teenager you can't realize that their is so much more to life than the hallways at highschool. The fact that they feel like life is not worth living and nothing is ever going to get better is so sad. WHAT IF THAT WAS YOUR CHILD?? however you feel about gays right or wrong do you think your childs life is worthless? How would you feel if you came home to your child laying dead on the floor because at 13 they couldn't take it anymore? How would you like to have that unbearable heart ache?

Joel Burns, you are to be commended for having the guts to tell your story during a city Council meeting. If enough people have the courage to step forth like you did, the bullying of homosexuals will be given the attention it deserves.

It is hoped that in the near future homosexuals will have their full rights under the U S constitution and will no longer be treated as Second Class Citizens.

I'm gay and can relate I'm my late 40's and back then you didn't have any support. high school was hell but at 30th reunion one of the bullies was a openly gay man .Working at a small Michigan school I have been there ten years plus the school does look the other way when It comes to bullies If the bullies are apopular of wealthily students they really don't want to get involved, being a gay man this hurts
The school found out I was gay when I got injured and my partner of over 20 years had to pick so things up for me at school, and from then on the school has done everything they can think of to get rid of me when I went to my union they said they cant help be cause gay people don't have the same rite as straight people
Over the years I have seen good people railroaded out the school so bullying goes on with staff and there's no support there, so as and adult male suffering with this and medical issues there not a day that I don't thing of giving up and taking a easy way out. As a gay man working in a school we need to stop the bulling at the top how can teachers and staff stop bulling when therebeing bullied in the work place as well

everyone gets bullied when young and for many different reasons. bullying can be name calling, being ostracized, being punched continuously. bullying is not just about homosexuals. everyone has someone, something, some group, some religion, etc., they either love, hate, or dislike immensely and it can be for any number of reasons. for example, the current hatred seems to be directed at mexicans but the once hated blacks are now acceptable. christians used to be respected but now they are under continued suspicion and dislike because of their two sided morals, pedophiles. hatred never ever goes away while love comes and goes.

The anti-gay agenda agenda is a smokescreen to cover up the fact that for each child victim of sexual predation by a stranger there are dozens of victims of sexual predation at the hands of relatives. By focusing on homosexuals who are consenting adults (a victimless crime) they draw away the ire of society and keep the anger of people focused on innoncents (gays) while the true cause of most of society's ills lies in the messed-up childhoods of each individual. As always it is blame the victim time.
