Courteney Cox, David Arquette Separate

Courteney Cox and David Arquette announced Monday they have been separated for some time but said they remain committed parents and "best friends."

The actors released a joint statement announcing what they are calling a trial separation.

"The reason for this separation is to better understand ourselves and the qualities we need in a partner and for our marriage," the statement said. "We remain best friends and responsible parents to our daughter and we still love each other deeply."

The statement was released shortly after In Touch Weekly reported the couple's split.

Cox, 46, and Arquette, 39, met on the set of the film "Scream" in 1996 and married three years later. They have a 6-year-old daughter together.

The actors' statement Monday said they were comfortable with the boundaries they had set up and hoped they would be treated with dignity by friends, family and the media.

While the pair are inserting some space into their personal lives, their careers remain intertwined.

Cox and Arquette are costarring in the fourth installment of the "Scream" series, which is due out next year.

Cox gained widespread fame for her role on the comedy "Friends" and currently stars in ABC's "Cougar Town." Arquette is an executive producer of that show and has appeared in numerous films, including "Never Been Kissed" and "3000 Miles to Graceland."

She's obviously banging her co-star, and from what David's been saying in interviews he hasn't been exactly faithful himself

Maybe that is why she left filming a few months back. They said it was personal. Maybe that is when they decided to have a trial seperation. hhmmmmm

IF they were truly in love still, they'd work it out and be together. Obviously, they must have been fighting for some time or something happened where one wants out. Two people in love after 6 or 7 yrs don't just seperate for no reason.

I think celebrities sound ridiculous when they say stuff like that. It's an insult to relationships everywhere. If you truly love each other and you're best friends, then you wouldn't be breaking up. If it was some publicist's idea to say that, I'd get a new publicist. Better to say nothing than to say something stupid.

Yep , it doesn't make any sense! "Best friends" who "love each other deeply" don't divorce when problems occur. They seek counseling!
If they had any wisdom, they would recognize that their need to "better understand ourselves and the qualities we need in a partner and for our marriage" is code for the very common mid-life crisis, and is representative of an unfullfilled need, often spiritual, that a separaton or new parter will never fullfill!
