Study: Fat Men, Skinny Women Make More Money

If your company has a salary scale, there may be a reason why they use that word.

A new study reveals that thinner women -- and larger men -- tend to make the most money.

"Early Show" Contributing Correspondent Taryn Winter Brill reported new research from the University of Florida (pdf) finds that, for women, corporate America is just like a catwalk -- the smaller your waist -- the bigger your paycheck. But if you're a man looking to snag that corner office, don't worry about skipping dessert. Thinner men actually make less money.

According to the study, women who weighed 25 pounds less than the group norm earned about $16,000 more per year. A woman 25 pounds above the group norm earned about $14,000 less. Thinner men, on the other hand, made almost $9,000 less than their average male co-worker.

When we took the findings to an expert, she wasn't surprised.

Debra Shigley, a career expert, said, "I think women are judged by their appearance in the workplace…Women are expected to be thinner and men…the standards are a little more flexible for men."

For more expert opinion, check out what CBS News Medical Correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton and "Early Show" Contributor and child and adolescent psychologist Dr. Jennifer Hartstein had to say on the broadcast about what this study means about health and Americans' mentality toward weight.

I wonder if there is any kind of correlation as to how much stress fat men and skinny women have in their lives.

death to the fat guy. All this does is make me want to spit on CBS and every fat guy that walks by me. I'm sure their snutty about this, I'm sure they feel a self reassurance, a nurturing thing that says "it's okay to be big" 14 THOUSAND less huh, and people are dying of starvation. CBS is disgusting everyone who let this kind of thing arise should go hide in a corner, a dark corner. Do you know what it is like to starve? you probably don't. You've been pampered your whole life and your life might be financially sound... but your lives are empty, your lives are a joke...I promise. Perhaps you little lost children will learn your lesson and eat your peas huh... I'd love the chance to cram them down your throat. ******* rich people die already.

Oh yea let's make sure the fat guy can get his supersized micky ds super meal, cause he just can't quite afford his mortgage, to stressed out from all the credit card bills. Hey here's an idea how about you stop pointing out the fat guy, stop looking at the anorexic girl and OH MY GOD concentrate on the work you stupid people.

Honestly, a college kid works his ass off, may not even have enough money to eat or drive in the middle of winter yet still turns his work in because he knows he will make more in the future if he suffers now... and what is mighty CBS and all our scientist so eager to find out, how much the fat guy makes.

Well congradulations CBS I hope you choke on that artificial ground beef cheeseburger laced with that "make you come back for more" medicine. Honestly I'm ashamed of this, you think this motivates me to invent the faster computer or the longer lasting light bulb. No it makes me want to go to the fat guys corner office throw him through the window and jump out myself. Tell me is there a cheese burger on his death bed? huh? is mickydes going to pay for his oversized coffin. I'm a 27 year old ruined professional because someone thought a priest touched me, looking at this...

Your losers, your idiots, sit up there at CBS and say what will make millions of people watch us hmmmmmm... I know fat guys and skinny girls. But whatever you wanna keep paying the pigs it's your world... most definitely NOT mine, nor anyone I ever want to associate with.

This did what the media always does for me, makes me regret being alive long enough to react to it. Just like all those rich druggies who shake their ass on tv and make industries...millions...your discusting, your disappointing, to me, to yourselves, to your families, and everyone who's ever said your name.

At least I can die with a smile on my face knowing the good lord didn't cheat me haha catch ya later on down the line

In a nutshell they are saying that Barbie Doll meet Santa Clause is the real people with job and Mrs. Clause meet athlete man are the ones that will either get low paying jobs or no job. Companies are being pure racial and companies say they are not racial. A collage degree to them don't matter no more. Mrs. Clause and athlete man can do as good as Barbie Doll and Santa Clause can.

Clearly, your 'collage' of words, is not supported by a college degree! Dare I pause, for the next clause? It really is Santa Claus! The study is done by one of the top people in attraction studies. They are the experts and have been making these studies for years. If CBS News twisted it then so be it. The authors make the point that education is more influential than looks overall. Where you point out that a degree 'don't matter no more' is not the issue. Please check your grammar and spelling before hitting submit--it could be the reason why companies appear biased...illiterate is not appreciated.

There are some pretty common sense reasons for some of these results. White collar worker men get fat because they stay put in their chairs more, and probably are more productive. Skinny men's priorities are more directed towards themselves personally. Fitness requires time, not spent in a chair, not at a desk. Pitiful as it may seem, it is pretty easy to figure out why skinny women get paid more by male bosses. The only consolation is that the same thick male bosses who think they are manipulating those skinny women, are probably being effectively manipulated, by those very same women. Thinking from the crotch isn't particularly clever.

Studies like this one measure a correlation of information but do not explain why it happens. Men who may earn more may be fatter but that can be due to why they earn more: they may work longer hours, eating fastfood or networking over meals and alcohol. They maybe under a lot of stress and stress promotes eating. They get a lot of calories so they get fat. They don't eat right or excercise. And they likely die younger from stress and obesity.

Women may be skinner and successful not just because they are attractive. The business world still pigeon holes woman by shape. Shorter and fatter women are more "motherly." Skinner and taller woman are close to the male norm in business. Woman are more likely to be judged by appearance than men.

This merely underscores who is minding the store and setting salary policies...fat men (probably unattractive) wanting thin women (probably attractive) working in their companies.

I find that news agencies that report on studies such as this, as being "news"worthy, to be irresponsible and and Nielsen ratings seeking. I don't believe for one minute that skinny women get paid more because they are skinny, any more than I believe that fat men get paid more because they are fat. Reporting the results this way is merely a surface treatment that borders on sensationalism and inflammatory.
