Chavez: Venezuela "Taking On" Nuclear Energy

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Monday that his government is carrying out initial studies into starting a nuclear energy program.

Chavez brought up the issue during a news conference, saying the South American country needs an atomic energy program.

"We're taking on the project of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, and they aren't going to stop us," Chavez said. "We need it and we're carrying out the first studies."

Chavez is a close ally of Iran and has defended the Iranian nuclear program, saying he is sure Iran is not making atomic weapons in spite of U.S. and European suspicions.

He has mentioned plans for an atomic energy program previously. It remains unclear how quickly he intends to pursue the program.

Chavez brought up the issue while referring to the case of a physicist and his wife in New Mexico who are accused by U.S. authorities of offering to help develop a nuclear weapon in contacts with an undercover U.S. agent posing as a representative of the Venezuelan government.

"They detained some scientist professors, I think Argentines, and then I was ready to respond when I saw that a government spokesman came out there saying that no, no, there is no evidence," Chavez said.

The U.S. government is not alleging Venezuela or anyone working for it sought U.S. secrets in the case.

Chavez brought up the case as an example of some of the claims his leftist government has to contend with.

"They invent so many things," he said. "The fact they say there is no evidence doesn't mean they aren't going to find it tomorrow, or fabricate it ... that Venezuela is making an atomic bomb."

He called that idea preposterous, saying: "Who in Venezuela could take on a project of that type? Who? We aren't going to take it on."

You will find this same situation with most all of the OIL CARTEL Nations in that they want to incorporate the use of alternative energy for their domestic use to allow for the complete sale of their OIL Product. The United States needs an aggressive and massive program also to balance our imported Petrol Oil needs.

To allow that this crazy man installs "ATOM-ENERGY" in Venezuela is like to put Cuba with its missiles against us again. This atom energy it is not for every country. Iran is producing this problem, and "Chaves" will use it to create more problems in North America. Stop this man before we shall scream a Chernobill example.

YES HUGO, WE NEED MORE OF YOUR GUIDANCE...
...with regard to properly disposing of your and your supporting ideologues and henchmen's corpses, as soon as you and your regime are deposed. In the meantime Mr Chavez, intimate brother of nuclear purveyor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, since your country, like Iran, is energy-rich, no nuclear program whatsoever for you and your fascistic regime, because you don't really need such program. Do you? It has been predicted - fairly accurately - that your party is near its end, Mr Chavez. ...coming to get you, sweetheart. Q: And do you know who's coming after you? A: The democracy, freedom of speech, and freedom of expression that you and your regime has denied to your people.

We also know that your and the Iranian Islamofascist regime's aim is to destroy America, but that just aint gonna happen!

Chavez will keep on pulling stunts like this to try and ally himself with Iran and Cuba, but when their regimes finally fall, he will follow suit. He is a bumbling idiot with power, so it won't be long, now.

Interesting question whether we'd let him or not. Intervening in South America/Central America is a US tradition and he's an easier target than Iran. He'd be a good target for a macho president or just one in need of a foreign distraction.

BTW, nuclear wastes aren't just a talking point. At the current level of technology we'll have to be dealing with those wastes for centuries. While the per year costs are fairly low, given the long time periods, the last calculations I saw indicated that a nuclear power plant and related waste management would consume more energy that it produces. Just another case of pushing our problems off onto future generations who will have to deal with the wastes but get no energy from their production. Assuming, of course, that there are future generations.

I say let him have it, as long as he has a place to put the waste in his country. If he wants nuclear energy, he better be able to deal with the consequences. BTW, isn't Venezuela an OPEC country?

Nuclear waste is just a talking point and is handled accordingly. Its a fear factor when dealing with people who are so focused on Solar/Wind. The sad thing is that we develope more waste and destroy more enviroments mining Lithium than we do with safety disposing raidiative waste.

Its like fearing the microwave when you want to use an open fire.

Stopping nuclear poliferation is not a one-sided affair. We can complain all we want about it, but while we are holding on to ours, the is no will or incenitive whatsoever for any other country to get rid of theirs.
