Ugly Video of Teen Girl Fight; One's Mom Nabbed

Girls fighting girls on tape is nothing new to the Internet.

But, as CBS News Correspondent Jeff Glor reports, one video, of a particularly ugly fight, is grabbing lots of attention: The mother of one of the two teen battlers allegedly encouraged her daughter, and is facing criminal charges.

The local sheriff says April Newcomb, 39, should instead have been trying to stop or prevent the fight, and she's been formally accused of child abuse.

The brutal brawl between 16-year-olds, in Palmetto, Fla., was apparently over a boy. Their names are being withheld due to their ages.

Many in the cheering crowd came with cell phones, eager , Glor says, to post the video on the Web.

Authorities say Newcomb can be seen in the background, and she can be heard trying to lend her daughter support.

A spokesman for the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, Dave Bristow, said, "We're basically in shock (that) a parent can sit there and watch their child and not intervene. … It's pretty obvious this is child abuse."

Police quote Newcomb as admitting in an interview that she was "wrong, and I understand where y'all are coming from. I think unfortunately it was going to happen no matter what."

It appears Newcomb knew about the fight before it even began. She apparently can be seen walking to the scene with her daughter to confront the other girl.

The fight lasted about three minutes.

If convicted, Newcomb faces up to five years in prison. She's free on $15,000 bail.

Police say nobody was seriously hurt in the melee.

Psychologist Dr. Jeff Gardere, a contributor to HealthGuru.com, told "Early Show" co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez Newcomb's alleged behavior was "criminal. It was atrocious. It was absolutely stupid. And I think, at this point, she realizes what she did was wrong. She got caught up in the moment.

"Good parenting does not dictate that you egg your child on. You work with your child on and teach them conflict resolution skills.

"And, I have to point out, she was afraid her daughter might get hurt in the back of the head, because she had a previous head injury, and … she (was) being hit with rabbit punches in the back of the head several times. So this is absolutely horrific.

" … The parenting was non-existent here. We've seen this before, where parents get caught up; they're living vicariously through their children. So I guess she wants her daughter to win because, in her own way, she's helping her daughter with her self-esteem. But it's absolutely the wrong thing. Maybe she wants herself to win to say she's got a champion on her hands. But it is absolutely atrocious."

He was also sharply critical of the girls' school, Palmetto High School, for failing to take action after the fight.

This video makes me so sad. How could anyone stand by and watch that? The utterly pathetic thing is they're fighting about a BOY (????) Great...get your nose broken, THEN watch the boys line up for you. Brilliant strategy.

She will be found not guilty and rightly so.The use of the word "y'all" will be enough to acquit her in a Florida court.

This is upsetting to see this mother get arrested. We all don't know the whole story behind this situation. I was just watching "America's Funniest Videos" and watched all these parents doing things where something happened to their kids while they video taped them. They knew what they were doiong and had to know there was a good chance of their child getting hurt. I know I wouldn't let my kid do what these parents where letting thier kids do. Now why don't they arrest all these parents for child neglect.

Think about it people, what is this country doing? What direction will this lead us?

I was also watching an episode today on TV were this guy killed 2 people in New Mexico and only got 2 years. While serving his sentence, in prison he killed another guy and he was sentenced to 4 years for the death of that inmate. Well he was released in 2005 and while he was only out for one month he went on a shooting spree and now in a couple of months he will be out again.

Now we want to arrest a parent for child neglect for a teenage fight...come on

Why are we wasting tax dollars on this? better yet why did the police who get our tax money not stop this? The answer is simple. The prosocuter of this town either A) wants a pay raise from a worthless conviction that has no hope of EVER preventing this behavior in the future. or B) the proscutor of this jurisdiction is looking to run for office. either way he/she is wasting your tax dollars and harassing people that don't need to be. Yaknow i would almost support a charge against the mother for taping it and putting it on you tube, but thats not what is being charged here.Child Abuse my ass both fighters were willing combatants. and the drivel of but thier minors and some the world works different for the, is the failue of americas publics and parents at its best.

we live in the real world folks , so do our children.

the only people who live I this perfect utopian fantasy world where everyone follows the is our public servants and governments, hell even the school said this fight was inevitalbe and happens 20 times a day.

the problem here is the juvinille and niave polices of this police force and their DA's office.

What about the other adults present? Will there be charges towards them also for not stopping the fight? There are several you can see in the video who are also watching

who cares!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????????? Charge them for what!? onlooking? if they'd of stopped it, people would be on here complaining that one of the adults harmed one of them or harrassed them. then THAT ADULT would be sued. I'd of done the same thing, let them duke it out, they are same age. They'll be fine. which might I add, both of them are, just like every other fight KIDS get into. This was not a bar fight!

All of you that think jail sentences help people. You don't know up from down, right from wrong, back from forward.

If you see a fight, you break it up. You don't look to see whose lives you can destroy and then call that helping them.

Some of you, with straight faces, wanting to hunt down everyone in the video and put their lives through hell - to what end? What do you think that accomplishes?

Have you gone your whole life believing that accomplishes something positive - it doesn't. So open your eyes and see the world for the first time, you haven't been helping people, you've been harming them.

The theory about jail, is you are helping society - and indeed when you incarcerate a violent felon, you probably are helping society. But going down and trying to hunt down kids to cause them some harm - geez, you need to get a grip.

This particular issue requuires education, instilling values, parents who are going to ground kids for participating - but not the overwhelming harm that the government provides when they get involved.

I doubt she will get a jail sentence. The five year sentence is the maximum penalty for child abuse, and the sentence is determined by the judge based on the severity of the crime. If the judge is logical, she'll end up with a fine and suspended sentence.

Girls fighting isn't surprising, but parents egging their daughter on is. Shame on that mother.
