Size Matters: How Male, Female Brains Compare

When it comes to male and female brains, researchers are finding there's evidence that size actually does matter, according to a recent article in the New York Post.

Special Section: Dr. Jennifer Ashton
Video Series: Dr. Ashton's Health and Wellness

CBS News Medical Correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton explained,"There appears to be a difference in the size of the brain when you compare men versus women, we're talking about the anatomy here. Obviously, male brains tends to be larger, because men tend to be, but within the brain certain structures and parts of the anatomy, some are bigger in women, some are bigger in men. So, for example, in male brains, men have six and a half times more gray matter than women do. Gray matter is partly responsible for information processing, so may explain in general men tend to be better in math."

But women, Ashton said, have as much as 10 times as much white matter -- the part of the brain that's I partially responsible for connecting information processing centers. Ashton said this could contribute to why women are such good multi-taskers.

Ashton joked, "(Researchers) did not find anything in the part of the brain that's responsible for controlling a remote or the whining center. So that's still under research."

But seriously, a man's brain is just plain bigger. Ashton said men's brains are typically about two percent larger.

However, Ashton added the caveat: "When we are just talking about size, we are not talking about quality. We are not saying just because certain parts of the male brain is larger or in general larger, doesn't mean men are smarter, not talking about intelligence or talking about the fact things can be done better in one sex versus the other even if that part of the brain is not as big."

"Early Show" co-anchor Harry Smith remarked, "It is interesting the whole white matter versus gray matter business, isn't it?"
"Absolutely," Ashton said.

"It kinds of does fit in with the stereotype," Smith said.

Ashton replied, "A little bit, but other things like hormones and genetic differences. You know, this is one piece of the puzzle. It's one piece of the puzzle; it's not the whole picture."

So can you help your brain grow or be nurtured in one direction or another?

Ashton said, "You can always nurture and you can always grow. But, there's a lot of research in recent past that have shown that the brain is what we call plastic, which means it's able to be developed, even after certain connections have been laid down. So, for example, if you don't feel you're particularly good at math, by doing math games or things like Sudoku, you can actually stimulate and grow that part of your brain very much like you can grow your bicep with exercise. We've done things like functional MRIs, the scans that light up when used, that can increase those areas in the brain."

Ashton added some diseases favor one gender over the other.

"We know that," she said. "For example, women are more prone for depression, men tend to be more affected by things like (attention deficit disorder) and schizophrenia. This field is just in its infancy. We'll be learning a lot more about it."

The brain is plastic, you emphasize and rightly. It responds to training just as the body does.
The brains of some are like trees which grow all in one direction because of a stream in the vicinity. Those of others branch out in a more balanced way.
Over the centuries women have had much more to do with the care of babies. Their multi-tasking ability is equal to the unpredictable actions babies sometimes engage in.

kitandkat says:
Let W be the amount of white matter in a man
Let G be the amount of grey matter in a woman
Assume the brains of men and women are equal
(ie we ignore the 2% size difference.)
Then, because W for women is 10x that for men
and G for men is 6.5x that for women:
man = woman
W + 6.5G = 10W + G
5.5G = 9W
G = 18W/11

The total amount of a man's brain is:
W + 6.5G = W + 6.5(18W/11) = 10.64W
and the ratio of white to grey in a man is:
1/10.64 = 0.09402

The total amount of a woman's brain is:
10W + G = 10W + 18W/11 = 11.64W
and the ratio of white to grey in a woman is:
10/11.64 = 0.8594

This proves that women can't do math.

If Dr Jennifer Ashton believes that women have 10 times as much white matter as men, and men have 6.5 times as much grey matter as women, I doubt she has any grey matter at all.

I'm sure this is true, but the percentages and brain topography must vary.
For example, I'm 95% convinced that my wife has a speech center 20 times the size of a normal person...

That's funny, the women that hang around me must have an anger center that's relatively large. I can't think what else it could be...

Hmmmm, yes, I wonder what it could be???

Or explain why they're always flustered and stressed out.

I guess this proves women will always be behind in regards to cognitive functioning. They're still fun to have around though.

EXCUSE ME?

"They're still fun to have around though."

Geez, that's awfully nice of you to say. : P

If a man and a woman were in a car accident, and they had the same brain damage on one side of their brain, which caused them to be paralyzed on one side, the man would remain paralyzed, while the woman would probably regain function because the other half of her brain would take over. : ) : P
