Michael Vick's Dogs Are Real Story of Redemption

Michael Vick, who spent more than a year and a half in prison for running a dog fighting operation, was back on the football field Sunday, leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a win over the Detroit Lions. That's a pretty good story of redemption. But, there's an even better one about the dogs Vick abused. Fifty one pit bulls were taken from Vick's farm. Their owners often treat them like weapons on a leash. In the past, these pit bulls would have been euthanized. But, an effort was made to rehabilitate the animals. And the results have been extraordinary. Forty-seven are still alive and many have been adopted. Several of the pit bulls have even been trained as therapy dogs. Skeptic that I am, I had to see it to believe it. This morning, I met Hector. Numerous scars and some knocked out teeth are reminders of his violent past. But, Hector's eyes are filled with life. His tail wags -- proof probably there are no bad dogs -- only bad owners.

Just a minute. I'm Harry Smith, CBS News.

Agree. Thank you Mr. Smith, Ms. Turner, and CBS Early Show for reporting the good news on abused dogs and reporting responsibly about the mis-labeled dog breed. A wonderfully touching story. I adopted a Staffordshire Bull Terrier 3-yrs ago now (she's 5-yo). I visited foster home to see another dog/breed, but she came-up to me instead and she found us to be her forever home!! Definitely there are only bad and irresponsible owners that has given this so-called pit bull breed a bad name!!!! Thank you again.

Thank you so much, Mr. Smith. I appreciate your having the wonderful team of Hector and Roo Yori on this morning, too! I don't think Mr. Vick has really redeemed himself. He has said some vague things about what he "allowed to happen," and that's about it. Hardly makes up for having brutally killed innocent animals with his bare hands, which he clearly did. But the dogs tell the story so beautifully - thanks to you, and Mr. Yori, and Mr. Gorant, and Ms. Reynolds (among many) for giving them a voice!!!
