Colin Powell: Illegal Immigrants Fix My House

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell says illegal immigrants do essential work in the U.S. and he has firsthand knowledge of that - because they fix his house.

Powell, a moderate Republican, urged his party Sunday to support immigration generally because it is "what's keeping this country's lifeblood moving forward."

In an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press," he said a path to legal status should be offered to illegal immigrants because they "are doing things we need done in this country."

He added: "They're all over my house, doing things whenever I call for repairs, and I'm sure you've seen them at your house. We've got to find a way to bring these people out of the darkness and give them some kind of status."

Powell did not say whether he's hired illegal immigrants directly or they showed up with contractors.

Powell was President George W. Bush's first-term secretary of state and the nation's top military officer in the presidency of Bush's father and in the early months of the Clinton administration. Despite his Republican standing - he was once considered a formidable prospect for the GOP presidential or vice presidential nominations but stayed out of contention - he endorsed Democrat Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election.

In lamenting the party's rightward drift Sunday, he said Republicans must not become anti-immigration and spoke in support of legislation that would give certain children of illegal immigrants a way to become citizens if they pursue a college education or military service.

Immigration, he said, offers the U.S. a chance to maintain a youthful population in contrast with the aging of Europe and Japan.

Powell also said "fringe" elements on the right are taking a low road when they label Mr. Obama a foreign-born Muslim and peddle other false theories about non-American influences on the president's character. Mr. Obama was born in the U.S. and is Christian.

"Let's attack him on policy, not nonsense," he said.

And he said the tea party may not become an enduring force unless it moves beyond slogans and promotes an agenda that people "can see, touch and actually believe in." It's not enough, he said, to call for goals that most Americans support, such as controlled federal spending and adherence to the Constitution.

The former secretary of state said he still sees Mr. Obama as a transformational figure, if one who has lost some of his ability to connect with people.

Powell said he's not giving up on the GOP, even in the face of a rightward drift, and says it might actually help Mr. Obama if Republicans win the House in November and gain responsibility for driving policy, not just opposing Democrats.

If you think Powell is a "radical leftist" then the phrase is nothing but a meaningless insult. Turn off the Glenn beck and read a history book. There is a long history of radicalism in America from the haymrket martyrs to the cpusa to the ads. Powell has nothing to do with radicalism. And if you look at policy rather than rhetoric, Obama has more in common with Reagan than many republicans today.

Mr. Powell appears to be the only moderate who survived the Republican purges of the last 20 or so years.

And no, General Powell, I do NOT have illegal aliens working at my house! How dare you assume such a thing! Shame on you. Wake up America. This is the kind of "Republican" that does no good in standing up for conservative values.
I can see November from my house.

"No more push '1' for Spanish or '2' for English."

God forbid I have to push a button every once in a while because some people immigrated to my country. Quit reposting chainletters and post something substantive.

Why aren't the Obama administration and the Dept. of Justice going after Colin Powell? It is a violation of our federal laws to employ illegal aliens, punishable by at the minimum, fines per incident. I am sick and tired of the people in OUR COUNTRY, finding no problem with the invading force of foreign nationals picking and choosing which laws they will obey here. WHEN ARE WE GOING TO TAKE BACK AMERICA???
We cannot have our justice department filing suit against the state of Arizona for trying to uphold federal law, while they turn a blind eye to the illegal sanctuary cities that are destroying our country?

Not only are they destroying our great country, the 20 million plus ILLEGAL ALIENS are turning our country into a THIRD WORLD COUNTRY!

DOJ should go after Powell for hiring ILLEGAL ALIENS, he is committing a crime and should be arrested.

OK, so he didn't hire the illegal aliens to work at his house, but he knows they are all over the place. How does he know? Does he ask them? Isn't that a violation of their civil rights? (Colin, go check with Eric Holder.) If he didn't ask them, how does he know they are illegal? Because of the way they look? Isn't that racist? Why has the media given Colin Powell a pass on this? Hmm... maybe because they are biased? Ya think?

How dare you insult the American people by saying that you are OK with using illegal workers. They dont pay your salary like the true Americans. Maybe we should eliminate your job and do it with someone else that does not pay taxes. Or better yet maybe we should all stop paying taxes so you won't recieve a pay check, then maybe you can pay for all that work with a burrito.

Mr. Powell is obviously having a senior moment and is out of touch with reality in our country. Our own federal government will not even enforce immigration laws. No one is listening, or cares about natural born Americans who made this country. We need to end the status quo in Washington and every state ASAP. Our government is ran by egregious, greedy, corporations. They have sold America out for profit. They outsource and offshore our jobs. Then corporations like Charles Schwab and eBay hire H1B workers. President Obama should be impeached for not actively enforcing current immigration laws. I have changed my party from Democrat to Declines to state a party. I plan to vote against all encumbents.

Reality is reality. The General is speaking reality. Illegal Immigrants are in this country and this is an issue that must be dealt with. McCain at one point in his political career pointed out the same things that General Powell pointed out yesterday. The illegal immigration problem is not going to go away, it will remain an issue until we solve it.

Be careful. The public isn't interested in rational reality, they are insterested in red meat and blood.......as evidenced by a plethora of posters on this thread.

Give them a path to citizenship after the recession and not during it and give the few jobs that there are to legitimate citizens and legal immigrants until then. You've got to be able to help yourself before you can help others after all people.

I have had my doubts about General Powell for some time now but this is the icing on the cake. Why not let the workers that are here legally work on his house ? This is almost unbelieveable what he is saying.....

He should step back and look at his statements in the light of legal Americans who are without jobs and hurting.....

If he runs for anything, he will not get my vote. Just sayin'

It is a sad day when a Republican Official who is looked up to states immigration makes the world go round!!!!!!!!!!!

Our world and rights for freedom and a place to live begin at home!!!!!!!

Americans are out of work because immigrants come to OUR COUNTRY and undercut the american wage. They live mostly in undesirable neighborhoods, with many people under one roof, too many if the board of health would look into it. So they work cheap.

American's have a code of living to go by for the well being of their families,,,,,,,,,,,,,SO THEY CAN'T WORK as cheap.

This man and anyone like him is a disgrace!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it weren't for non native Americans this country wouldn't be anything like it is. The American Indians would still be running around in loin cloths chasing buffalo. Give it a rest with the Native American stuff.
And you wouldn't have a school to go to!!
